Prabhu pitches for improving energy efficiency, quality standards in cement industry

Commerce and Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu Tuesday pitched for improving energy efficiency, environmental excellence and quality standards in the Indian cement industry. He said per-capita cement consumption in India is still around 235 kg, against global average of 520 kg, which shows significant growth potential for the sector. Housing for all by 2022, creation of 100 smart cities, dedicated freight corridors, clean India mission and ultra mega power projects will boost growth of the sector, he added. The minister also urged the cement industry to think of recycling of material used in the production. Prabhu said this while releasing a compendium on 'The Cement Industry India 2018' here. NTPC to curtail power supply to Telangana, Karnataka, Andhra from midnight for payment default

State-run power giant NTPC will regulate power supply to Telangana, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh from Tuesday midnight for not clearing dues outstanding for over 60 days from issue of bills to discoms of these states. According to three separate notices issued to the power distribution companies (discoms), as much as Rs 4,138.39 crore is due for over 60 days and as per the power regulator CERC's guidelines, the generators can serve notice for regulation of power to defaulters. In the notices, the NTPC has asked to pay the total amount. These dues include bills pending for supply of solar as well as thermal power by NTPC. NTPC has cited the CERC guidelines on regulation of power supply. It said: "In case of outstanding dues or in case the required letter of credit or any other agreed payment security mechanism is not maintained as per the agreement, the generating company may serve a notice for regulation of power supply on the defaulting entity, for reducing the drawl schedule." Gopal Rai meets farmers on implementing Swaminathan Committee Report

Development and Irrigation Minister Gopal Rai Tuesday held a meeting with farmers in outer Delhi's Narela area for devising a mechanism to implement MSP for crops on the basis of recommendations of the Swaminathan Committee Report. According to an official statement, the meeting was attended by senior government officers, farm experts and farmers from nearby villages. Rai would meet Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh on Wednesday on implementation of the Swaminathan Committee's recommendations. The statement said Rai has ordered formation of a committee comprising farmers, officers and sought its report within seven days. Rai will also hold another meeting with farmers in outer Delhi's Najafgarah, dominated by farm areas, on February 7. One confrontational incident reported with Sentinelese tribe in 10 years: Govt

In the past 10 years, only one confrontational incident has occurred with the Sentinelese in the Andaman and Nicobar islands, where a total population of 50 of the community live, Lok Sabha was informed Tuesday. In response to a question, Minister of State for Home Affairs Hansraj Gangaram Ahir also said that during past 10 years, 19 confrontational incidents have been reported with Jarawas in the region. The Jarawa tribe has a population of 514 as per latest census. "The Sentinelese are still in isolation practicing primordial hunting and gathering way of life. Khattar writes to Kerjiwal, expresses concern over release of 'polluted' water into Yamuna

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Tuesday wrote to his Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal expressing serious concern over the release of "highly polluted" water into the Yamuna river and Gurugram canal. He urged Kejriwal to direct all the departments concerned of Delhi government to ensure that no untreated or partially treated effluent is released into the river and the canal. In the letter, Khattar said Yamuna enters Delhi at Palla in Sonipat district and then again near Okhla Head in Basantpur village in Faridabad district. It travels at a stretch of 52 kms in the NCT of Delhi. "During this course, more than 60 drains having partially treated or untreated effluent of industrial or domestic sources, outfall into it. This causes severe pollution of the river before its re-entry into Haryana," he wrote in the letter. India, Monaco resolve to fight climate change, step up trade and investment

India and Monaco on Tuesday vowed to deepen ties in trade and investment, as well as collaborate on combating climate change, after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held wide-ranging talks with Monaco's reigning monarch Prince Albert II. NTPC resolves issue over payment dues from discoms in 3 states

: Power producer NTPC Limitedhas sorted out issue over payment dues with various discoms of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, sources said Tuesday Also, the NTPC said it would not regulate power supply as it had indicated in its notice earlier, the sources said. The dues from the three parties were Rs 5,838.04 crore and the amount overdue by 60 days was Rs 4228.39 crore. The power producer had, on January 30, issued notices to the discoms saying it would regulate the supply to various power utilities of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka from February 6 for not clearing bills pending for over 60 days. Punjab govt sets up committee to boost dairy sector

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh Tuesday announced setting up a high-powered committee to boost dairy sector for supplementing farmers' income in a result-oriented manner. During a meeting to review the progress of various development projects and schemes related to animal husbandry, dairy and fisheries, the chief minister asked additional chief secretary of animal husbandry department to complete the formalities for setting up the committee, an official statement said. Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari will Wednesday lay foundation stone for three highway projects, entailing an investment of Rs 2,345 crore, in Odisha.
