Musk releases all Tesla patents to help save the Earth

Elon Musk announced Thursday he had released all of the electric carmaker Tesla's patents, as part of an effort to fight climate change. In a blog post, the colourful billionaire founder of Tesla promised the company "will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology." It was a remarkable move in an industry where the smallest idea or seed of invention is carefully guarded to protect its monetary value. And it in fact came on the same day US prosecutors charged a Chinese national with stealing secrets from Apple's self-driving vehicle project. "Tesla Motors was created to accelerate the advent of sustainable transport," Musk said. "If we clear a path to the creation of compelling electric vehicles, but then lay intellectual property landmines behind us to inhibit others, we are acting in a manner contrary to that goal," he said. In fact Musk said he was now sceptical of patents which too often only served "to stifle progress" and helped ..

Thousands of young people protest for climate action in Belgium

Thousands of young people rallied in Belgium to demand action on climate change Thursday part of a wave of demonstrations led by high school students and aimed at intensifying pressure on governments. Carrying banners with slogans like "No world, no future" and "Make our planet great again", some 30,000 people took to the streets across the country, with some 12,500 in Brussels. They are part of a network of student-led protest groups that have seen tens of thousands of young people around the world ditch school to demand serious action against climate change in recent months. In Belgium the "Youth for Climate" movement has seen schoolchildren and students shun classes every Thursday for the past four weeks. "Many say we do this to skip school, but we didn't even have class today, our teachers were away," said one student, Elias. "So we just come because it's important. I don't want to find myself in 20 years with a destroyed climate and tell myself that I didn't do ...

IAEA urges Japan to take ample time in Fukushima cleanup

The International Atomic Energy Agency urged Japan on Thursday to spend ample time in developing a decommissioning plan for the tsunami-damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant and to be honest with the public about remaining uncertainties. In a report based on a visit by an IAEA team to the plant in November, the agency urged the operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co., to secure adequate space and finish plans for managing highly radioactive melted fuel before starting to remove it from the three damaged reactors. The cores of the three reactors melted after a massive 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Utility and government officials plan to start removing the melted fuel in 2021, but still know little about its condition and have not finalized waste management plans. "The IAEA review team advises that before the commencement of the fuel debris retrieval activities, there should be a clear implementation plan defined to safely manage the retrieved material," the report said. "TEPCO should ensure

Simian's bites force people to leave TN village

Unable to bear the bites of an elusive monkey, several people of a village near here trooped out of their homes Thursday and only returned after officials promised to trap the animal. India's public transport infra to be developed on London model: Gadkari

Keen on pushing innovative transport models, Union minister Nitin Gadkari Thursday said India is ready to embrace the London model to revamp its public transport infrastructure against a backdrop where share of buses has shrunk to 1 per cent of the total vehicles from 15 per cent earlier. A fleet of drones, trucks and small planes sprayed water to try to reduce air pollution around Bangkok on Thursday while the city's governor invited critics to brainstorm better ideas to improve the air quality in the Thai capital. Unhealthy pollution levels forced city schools to close Wednesday for the rest of week, and the Public Health Ministry advised against outdoor activities. Faced with public discontent as well as a possible health crisis, Bangkok's governor, Police Gen Asawin Kwanmuang, has declared the city a "pollution control zone," allowing firmer measures such as road closings and limits on diesel exhaust, outdoor burning and construction activities. Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha ordered inspections of factories to measure the pollution they are emitting. But he warned that implementing radical solutions could cause inconveniences that people might be unwilling to accept. "To ban vehicles or to ban vehicles on odd and even dates, will people accept that?" he said. ...
