A Bangladeshi father dubbed "Tree Man" for the bark-like growths on his body returned to hospital on Sunday after his condition worsened, he told AFP. Abul Bajandar has had 25 surgeries since 2016 to remove the growths from his hands and feet at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Doctors were on the verge of declaring their treatment a success before a sudden relapse prompted Bajandar to flee the clinic in May without notifying staff. Climbing stairs for just a few minutes at short intervals throughout the day can significantly improve heart health, a study has found. The research, published in the journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism, suggests that virtually anyone can improve their fitness, anywhere, any time. "The findings make it even easier for people to incorporate 'exercise snacks' into their day," said Martin Gibala, a professor at McMaster University in Canada. "Those who work in office towers or live in apartment buildings can vigorously climb a few flights of stairs in the morning, at lunch, and in the evening and know they are getting an effective workout," said Gibala. Previous studies had shown that brief bouts of vigorous exercise, or sprint interval training (SIT), are effective when performed as a single session, with a few minutes of recovery between the intense bursts, requiring a total time commitment of 10 minutes or so. For the study, researchers set out to determine if SIT ...

Rapid blood tests currently in use are unable to rule out tuberculosis and should be replaced with a more accurate test, according to a UK study published in The Lancet journal. In the largest study to date of rapid TB tests used by UK's National Health Service (NHS), a team led by researchers at Imperial College London found that available tests are not sensitive enough to rule out a diagnosis of TB in suspected cases, and so have limited clinical use. The research, published in the journal Lancet Infectious Diseases, also looked at a new second generation rapid blood test, developed at Imperial, and found it to be substantially more accurate than the existing tests. According to the team, once implemented the new test could enable doctors to quickly detect or rule out TB infection and help them to distinguish patients who need further investigation and treatment from those who do not and pose no infectious risk to others. "Tests of thousands of patients undergo diagnostic assessment

It turns out that scientists who are striving to create more effective treatments for diabetes are turning towards stem cells.Stem cells can be transformed into cells that produce insulin, the hormone that controls sugar. However, the amount of insulin produced by these cells is difficult to control.By tweaking the recipe for coaxing human stem cells into insulin-secreting beta cells, a team of researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis has shown that the resulting cells are more responsive to fluctuating glucose levels in the blood. The scientists found that when they transplanted the beta cells into mice that were unable to make insulin, the new cells began secreting insulin within a few days. They continued to control blood sugar in the animals for months. The study was published in the journal Stem Cell Reports.Speaking about the study, principal investigator Jeffrey R. Millman said, "We've been able to overcome a major weakness in the way these cells ...
Additives commonly used in processed foods to improve texture and extend shelf life may promote anxiety-related behaviours and make one less social, a study in mice has found. The study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, also showed sex differences in the mice's behavioral patterns, suggesting that emulsifiers affect the brain via distinct mechanisms in males and females. Though the researchers from Georgia State University in the US could not pinpoint the exact mechanism by which emulsifiers contribute to behavioral changes, they said inflammation triggers local immune cells to produce signalling molecules that can affect tissues in other places, including the brain. "The gut also contains branches of the vagus nerve, which forms a direct information pathway to the brain," said Geert de Vries, a professor at Georgia State, who led the study. Previous research by the same team has shown that emulsifiers can cause low-grade intestinal inflammation by altering the composition
