Zydus Cadila inks pact with Italy's SIFI to market intraocular lenses in India
Drug firm Zydus Cadila Tuesday said the company has tied up with Italy-based ophthalmic firm SIFI to market intraocular lenses in India. "SIFI's innovative IOLs (Intraocular lenses) have been approved by the Indian Central Drugs Standards Control Organisation (Directorate General of Health Services) and Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (Medical Device and Diagnostic Division)," Zydus Cadila said in a regulatory filing. Zydus Cadila said these surgical devices represent the most advanced solution for cataract refractive surgery and the correction of astigmatism (a condition where the cornea is irregularly shaped) and presbyopia (natural loss of near focusing ability that occurs with age). Mindfulness-therapy may help decrease stress in caregivers of veterans: Study
Mindfulness therapy can turn out to be an effective way of mitigating the stress experienced by spouses and other caregivers for military veterans, a recent study suggests.As part of the project, a team of researchers led a pilot study that taught caregivers of veterans in central Illinois mindfulness-based cognitive therapy skills.The caregivers in the treatment group - mostly women caring for their spouses - reported significant decreases in their perceived levels of stress, anxiety and worry.By contrast, the researchers found no significant changes in any of these symptoms among the participants assigned to the waitlist control group."This not only shows the feasibility but also the promise that mindfulness has for improving mental health outcomes in this vulnerable, hard-to-reach population. Drug major Glenmark Pharma Tuesday announced the launch of its anti-diabetes drug Remogliflozin in India. "Glenmark is the first company in the world to launch the novel SGLT2 inhibitor Remogliflozin and India is the first country to get access to this innovative drug...The drug is indicated in the treatment of type-2 diabetes mellitus in adults," the company said in a regulatory filing. SGLT2 inhibitors are oral anti-diabetes drugs that provide glycemic control, induce weight loss and reduce cardiovascular risks. Glenmark said it will commercialise Remogliflozin in India under the brand names 'Remo' and 'Remozen'. Cipla gets USFDA nod for pulmonary arterial hypertension drug
Drug major Cipla Tuesday said it has received final approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) for Ambrisentan tablets, indicated for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension. Cipla's Ambrisentan tablets 5 mg and 10 mg is AB-rated generic therapeutic equivalent version of Gilead Sciences Inc's Letairis, the Mumbai-based company said in a BSE filing. Ambrisentan tablet is an endothelin receptor antagonist indicated for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) (WHO Group 1) to improve exercise ability and delay clinical worsening, it added. Cipla said the US sales of Letairis tablets USP stood at USD 943 million in 2018. "The product is available for shipping immediately," the company added. Shares of Cipla were trading 0.80 per cent lower at Rs 563.90 apiece on the BSE.

Over 700 cases of Measles surface in US
At least 704 people in the United States have been affected by measles this year, authorities said on Monday.The Washington Post cited a report in which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that more than 500 people affected by the highly contagious and potentially life-threatening disease, were not vaccinated.The virus has been found in 22 states while more than 66 people have been hospitalised across the US.About 400 of the cases have been found in New York City and its suburbs, mostly in Orthodox Jewish communities.On April 24, the CDC said the number of cases had surpassed the previous record of 667, set in 2014. This year's outbreak is the largest in a single year in 25 years since the disease was declared eliminated in the US in 2000. Govt doctor arrested by ACB for bribery in C'garh's Bilaspur
A health department official was Monday arrested for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 in Chhattisgarh's Bilaspur district, a state Anti-Corruption Bureau official said. Dr Avinash Khare, posted as nodal officer of the Pre Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) in the office of Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO), Bilaspur, was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe from a private radiologist for operating his sonography centres and setting up a new CT Scan centre, Deputy Superintendent of Police (ACB) Ajitesh Singh said. National Health Authority gets two domain experts
The government appointed on Monday Dr R K Patel and Dr Ambrish Mithal as domain experts on the governing board of National Health Authority (NHA), the apex body implementing the Ayushman Bharat healthcare scheme. Dr Patel is Director of the UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre, Ahmedabad, a statement by the NHA said. Dr Ambrish Mithal is heading the Endocrinology and Diabetes division at Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon and has been awarded Padma Bhushan in 2015 and Dr B C Roy Award in 2017, it said. Researchers have claimed that mesothelioma patients are twice as likely to survive for two years when they are given a high dose of radiation to the affected side of the trunk.The study presented at the Estro 38 meeting looked at patients whose cancers could not be completely removed with surgery and the researchers say their findings have the potential to change treatment and outcomes for this group of patients.Mesothelioma is a rare but aggressive form of cancer that grows in the layers of tissues surrounding the lungs. "We know that overweight in adulthood is associated with an increased risk of RCC.
