Over 71 pc senior citizens in India victims of abuse by family members: Survey

More than 71 per cent of senior citizens in India face harassment or humiliation by their own family members, relatives or children, a study has revealed. "Based on our interactions with elderly people, it has been found that more than 71 per cent elderly...are being humiliated by their family members, relatives and others unknowingly, rather unintentionally," Agewell Foundation, an NGO working for the rights of the elderly, said in its note released ahead of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15. As per the survey, every second senior citizen is being "harassed or mistreated or humiliated by their own family members, children, relatives or others". The note is based on interactions with senior citizens across the country through its nationwide network of volunteers, the NGO said. Haryana to organise state-level function to honour outstanding athletes

A state-level function will be organised in Panchkula on June 24 to honour outstanding athletes of Haryana, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister, Anil Vij, said here Thursday. He said chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar will give away cash prizes worth Rs 90 crore to about 3,000 sportspersons winning medals in national and international competitions. Vij said that athletes who have won medals at Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and Para-Asian Games during the years 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 will be honoured in the function. Bangladesh PM presents budget on behalf of her sick finance minister

Sheikh Hasina on Thursday became the first Bangladeshi Prime Minister to present the national budget in Parliament after her ailing finance minister was unable to deliver his speech. Finance Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal, 72, was unwell when he arrived in Parliament from a hospital where he was admitted for overnight. He also took part in a Cabinet meeting ahead of the presentation of the budget. The nature of his illness is not known yet. Kyrgyzstan awards top medal to President Xi Jinping

Chinese President Xi Jinping was on Thursday conferred with the highest national award of Kyrgyzstan, which is hosting the 19th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. President of Kyrgyzstan Sooronbay Jeenbekov awarded his Chinese counterpart (Xi Jinping) the Manas Order of the First Degree, the country's highest national prize, China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Ahmed Essop, renowned author and educationist of Indian-origin has died in South Africa, a close family friend said. He was 88. A beloved teacher of English who clashed with the apartheid authorities and was barred from teaching died at a hospital. "The literary giant left us after being admitted to the hospital a few days earlier," said Aslam Khota. Essop was buried on Tuesday in his hometown of Lenasia, the mainly-Indian township south of Johannesburg. Born in India in 1931, Essop emigrated to South Africa as a child.
