Ashwin's Farewell: No talks with selectors, retirement expected post-NZ

"If I am not needed right now in the series, I am better off saying goodbye to the game," R Ashwin told India skipper Rohit Sharma before his surprise international retirement, refusing to let anyone else write his script after 14 years of service to the game. It is understood that retirement was on his mind after the home series against New Zealand, which India shockingly lost 0-3. He had made it clear to the team management that if he was not guaranteed a place in the playing eleven during the Australia series, he would not even travel Down Under. India played Washington Sundar ahead of Ashwin in Perth before the veteran returned for the pink ball Test, at Rohit's insistence. Ravindra Jadeja played in the Brisbane Test and as Rohit stated after the drawn third Test in Gabba, nobody knew how the squad would shape up for the remaining two games in Melbourne and Sydney. "There was no nudge from the selection committee. Ashwin is a legend in Indian cricket and he has the right to tak

ICC Ratings: Chepauk deemed 'very Good', Kanpur outfield 'unsatisfactory'

The ICC has rated Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium pitch, used for India's Test match against Bangladesh, as "very good" with other four home centres used during the season being deemed "satisfactory". In fact, all the three Test venues used against New Zealand -- Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy, Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune's Gahunje and Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai -- just about managed "satisfactory" ratings from the ICC match referee. However, Kanpur's Green Park stadium's outfield has been rated "unsatisfactory" by the ICC match referee Jeff Crowe. The government-owned stadium's poor drainage system led to only two full days of play against Bangladesh and despite the pitch being rated "satisfactory", the outfield didn't escape the wrath of the former Kiwi international. The high-scoring tracks at Gwalior, Delhi and Hyderabad used for Bangladesh T20Is were rated "very good", as they conformed to the requirements of the shortest format. However, the Indian team managem

India haven't become a bad team, they will turn things around: Tom Latham

New Zealand skipper Tom Latham remained considerate even after the historic 3-0 Test series clean sweep against India recently, asserting that Rohit Sharma's "quality" side has the ability to make a resounding comeback soon. The Kiwis, under Latham, became the first visiting side to whitewash India in a three-match home series, winning the Bengaluru, Pune and Mumbai Tests. "Indian cricket in general is really special. We've played against them a lot. The guys play with them at the IPL. They were certainly gracious in defeat and they're still a quality side," Latham said after arriving here from India. "They certainly don't become a bad team overnight and I'm sure they'll turn things around in time," he added. Latham said the series victory became much sweeter because New Zealand suffered 0-2 defeat against Sri Lanka before landing in India. "When we were in Sri Lanka a few weeks, where things didn't necessarily go our way, so, I think it makes these times extra special when you're

IND vs NZ: It's a low point in my career - Rohit Sharma after series defeat

Reflecting on the series, he noted that in the first two Tests, India failed to put up enough first-innings runs. "In this game, we got a 28-run lead, and the target was achievable."

IND vs NZ: I felt as long as I'm playing, we won't lose at home - Jadeja

The last time India lost a Test series at home dozen of years of back, Ravindra Jadeja had made his Test debut and perhaps in this journey of 77 long form games, he also felt a sense of invincibility whenever he donned the whites at home. After his 14th five-for in Tests, Jadeja admitted that his worst fear of losing a series at home has come true. "Firstly, I had this fear personally I had thought that I won't lose a series in India as long as I am playing. But that too has happened," he said after opening day's play in the third Test. Cricket is a great leveller and this humbling experience against the Black Caps and henceforth, he won't be "surprised" with anything. We won 18 series (at home), I thought as long as I am playing Test cricket in India we won't lose a series but that has happened, so I am not surprised with anything (that is happening)," Jadeja said. "We have set the expectations really high. Since last 12 years we did not lose a single series. I think we have lost

IND vs NZ: Mitchell feels 3rd Test evenly poised despite hosts' collapse

New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell on Friday said the third Test against India was "evenly poised" despite the hosts' collapsed, handing the advantage to the Kiwis after the opening day's play of the final match of the series here. India did well to keep New Zealand to 235 after the visitors won the toss with Mitchell top-scoring with 82, but the hosts lost wickets in heap towards the end to be placed at a precarious position of 86 for four, trailing by another 149 runs. "We put a total on the board (and) hopefully now we can take a few more wickets. We'll see what happens tomorrow (day two). The game is evenly poised right at the moment," Mitchell told the media after end of play on Friday. Indian spinners Ravindra Jadeja (5/65) and Washington Sundar (4/81) shared nine wickets between them on the first day as the pitch provided plenty of assistance to the tweakers. Mitchell said the conditions did not surprise the visitors. "It's the nature of red soil here in this part of the wor

IND vs NZ: The track has bounce but no pace off the pitch - Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja is happy with another five-wicket haul in Test cricket but conceded that in sultry conditions on a slow turner, bowling indeed was hardwork. Jadeja's 14th five-wicket haul came after a brief period of lull as he looked menacing while mixing deliveries, pitching it on good length spots and letting the variable bounce and abrasive surface work in his favour. However Jadeja's assessment of the track was also an indicator that possibly Ravichandran Ashwin has lost a bit of pace in his deliveries as it required more shoulder effort to get the zip off the surface. "I thought you need to mix and match (in terms of speed). The wicket has bounce but off the surface, the ball isn't taking off. Unless you put in a lot of shoulders and get the revs, it is difficult," Jadeja told Jio Cinema. "It was a special effort as it wasn't no easy to bowl in this heat. Even Washy (Washington Sundar) bowled well and everyone played their roles to perfection. Now our batters will need to ...
