India's fan industry sees green shoots in demands as festival approach

The fan industry is witnessing green shoots in demands led by increased housing renovation activities in urban and rural areas and expects better traction as the festive season approaches. The industry, which was facing almost flat/slow growth from the last two fiscals in volumes, is currently passing through a transition towards becoming energy efficient with star labelling, according to the Indian Fan Manufacturers Association (IFMA). IFMA Chairman Anuj Poddar said this is adding value to everyone including the customers to everyone and will encourage them to go for higher energy-efficient products. The Return on Investment (ROI) is around 18-24 months for a consumer if he opts for a high energy efficient fan and any new technology takes time for adoption. "The last few months were a transition period for the industry. We have gone from non-star to a star rating very smoothly, there were some hiccups and other things otherwise, we had anticipated well and planned it," Poddar ...

The peak power demand met, which is the highest supply in a day, rose to 236.59 GW in August 2023. The peak power supply stood at 195.22 GW in August 2022 and 196.27 GW in August 2021. The power ministry had estimated the country's electricity demand to touch 229 GW during the summer season. A force whose time has come, nothing can stop it: MoS IT on India's DPI

India's call for global cooperation and equitable growth for all, alongwith its showcase of transformative digitisation have resonated with the world, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar has said, exuding confidence that G20 presidency of India underpins strong messages that will leave an indelible mark. In an interview with PTI ahead of G20 Leaders' Summit scheduled in New Delhi for September 9-10, Chandrasekhar termed India's Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) a force whose time has come and added that nothing can stop it. He said the Indian approach on DPI smashes old normal, which was about big tech companies dominating the space, and paves the way for new normal, one that is open source, nimble, consumer-driven, and 'non-intermediated'. "When over 1 billion Indians are using it, who can resist it?," Chandrasekhar said. The Minister of State for Electronics and IT was referring to the country's payment, identity and other population-scale platforms which have captured attentio

Looking forward to India trip, disappointed Xi not attending G20: Biden

US President Joe Biden has said that he is looking forward to his trip to India this week but is disappointed that his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping will not attend the G20 summit in New Delhi. Biden will travel to India on September 7 to participate in the G20 Summit and will have a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 8 on the sidelines of the historic meeting, the White House announced on Friday. In its capacity as the current president of G20, India is hosting the annual summit of the influential grouping in New Delhi on September 9 and 10. Ahead of his trip, reporters asked Biden on Sunday whether he was looking forward to his visits to India and Vietnam. Yes, I am," Biden replied. He expressed his disappointment over President Xi of China not attending the summit in New Delhi. "I am disappointed, but I am going to get to see him," Biden said in response to a question. Leaders besieged by thorny issues as they hold ASEAN summit without Biden

Southeast Asian leaders led by Indonesian host President Joko Widodo are gathering in their final summit this year, besieged by divisive issues with no solutions in sight: Myanmar's deadly civil strife, new flare-ups in the disputed South China Sea, and the longstanding United States-China rivalry. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations meetings will open Tuesday in the Indonesian capital Jakarta under tight security. The absence of U.S. President Joe Biden, who typically attends, adds to the already somber backdrop of the 10-state bloc's traditional show of unity and group handshakes. After discussions Tuesday, the ASEAN heads of state would meet Asian and Western counterparts from Wednesday to Thursday, providing a wider venue that the U.S. and China, and their allies, have used for wide-ranging talks on free trade, climate change and global security. It has also become a battleground for their rivalries. Chinese Premier Li Qiang was set to join the meetings, including the ...

Xi Jinping to skip G20 summit, Li Qiang set to represent China: Report

It is almost certain that Chinese President Xi Jinping is going to skip the G-20 Summit in India next week and Premier Li Qiang is set to represent China at the conclave, people familiar with the development said on Saturday. Russian President Vladimir Putin has already conveyed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi his decision not to attend the Summit in-person as he has to focus on the "special military operation" in Ukraine. The Russian President had skipped the Bali summit of G20 in November last year as well. Many leaders in the past skipped the G20 summits for various reasons and it does not reflect anything about the host country, they said. In its capacity as the current president of G20, India is hosting the annual summit of the influential grouping in New Delhi on September 9 and 10. "The Chinese President is not travelling to India for the G-20 Summit," said one of the people cited above, adding that Premier Li is likely to represent China at the Summit. President Xi is als

Fatalities normal if sent to new environment: Namibia on cheetah deaths

High-Commissioner of Namibia to India Gabriel Sinimbo on Saturday said that the deaths of several cheetahs brought from his country and South Africa to Madhya Pradesh are normal as the project involves introducing animals to a new environment. He also expressed hope that the felines will be able to fully adapt to India's environment. Since March this year, altogether nine of the 20 cheetahs brought from the two countries died. When you are introducing animals to a new environment, there could be some challenges like fatalities. It's a part of any project of this nature, Sinimbo said. Under the Project Cheetah, a total of 20 radio-collared animals were imported from Namibia and South Africa to the Kuno National Park in Sheopur district of Madhya Pradesh and later four cubs were born to Namibian cheetah Jwala'. Out of these 24 felines, nine including three cubs have died. It's a novel project advocated by the honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reintroduce the large cat speci

G20 meet: 28-foot tall 'Nataraja' statue being installed at venue

A towering statue of 'Nataraja', believed to be the world's tallest, being installed at the venue of the upcoming G20 Summit here, has been made using an ancient casting technique. This statue, which is 28-foot tall including the pedestal, was made using the ancient lost-wax technique of metal casting that was used for making the famed Chola bronzes, sources said. The 'Nataraja' statue symbolises Lord Shiva as the 'lord of dance' and his cosmic power of creation and destruction. "We are installing the tallest-ever statue of Nataraja, in the campus of Bharat Mandapam, the venue of the G20 Summit," a source said. The G20 Leaders' Summit will take place from September 9-10 at 'Bharat Mandapam', the newly-built international convention and exhibition centre at the Pragati Maidan. The stretch of Mathura Road facing the Pragati Maidan has been spruced up and decorated with thematic posters, artistic logos and flags of G20 member nations. On the opening day of the summit, a 'Culture ...

India could lose groundwater by 3 times the current rate by 2080: Study

The rate of groundwater depletion could triple by 2080, if Indian farmers continued to draw groundwater at the current rate, which could threaten the country's food and water security, according to a new study. Warming climate has compelled farmers in India to adapt by intensifying the withdrawal of groundwater used for irrigation, the study led by the University of Michigan, US, found. As a result, the reduced water availability could endanger the livelihoods of more than one-third of the country's 1.4 billion residents and thus, could have global implications, the study published in the journal Science Advances said. "This is of concern, given that India is the world's largest consumer of groundwater and is a critical resource for the regional and global food supply," said senior author Meha Jain, assistant professor at the university's School for Environment and Sustainability. The study analysed recent changes in withdrawal rates due to warming by looking at historical data on

India should pursue with vigour the G20 agenda and make sure that gender parity and gender inclusive approaches are woven into everything, according to Commonwealth General-Secretary Patricia Scotland. In an interview with PTI, she highlighted the alarming gender disparities in the impacts of climate change, with a special focus on India's efforts to address this pressing issue.
