Coaching institute Arihant Academy on Thursday said it has acquired a 51 per cent stake in Zen Educational and Learning (ZEAL Academy) at a valuation of Rs 17 crore. The acquisition will enable Arihant Academy to expand its academic portfolio in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and cater to a larger student base with top-notch learning pedagogy, the company, which is listed on NSE SME platform, said in a filing. The company did not reveal the acquisition cost but stated that ZEAL Academy's valuation is priced at Rs 17 crore. "This also expands Arihant's presence across Navi Mumbai, it said. "By merging ZEAL Academy's local expertise with our teaching methods, we aim to create a more comprehensive learning experience and a stronger educational framework for students across the metropolitan region. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Saturday said commercialisation of education is adversely impacting its quality which is not good for the future of the nation. Speaking at a function organised by a private educational institute in Rajasthan's Sikar, Dhankhar said, "I see all around that what began as charitable work has now become commerce. Education becoming a business is not good for the future of the nation." Stating that education was never a source of income but a medium of sacrifice and charity to build a healthy society, Dhankhar rued that today it has become a commodity which is being sold for profit, thus adversely impacting its quality. "In some cases, it is even taking the shape of extortion. This is a matter of concern," he said. "While educational institutions should be financially sustainable, it is the responsibility of the industry to nurture them from time to time. Corporate houses should use their CSR funds liberally to build institutions and fund new courses.

The apex child rights body has raised serious concerns about the state of functioning in madrassas and called for stopping state funding to them unless they comply with the Right to Education Act. In its latest report titled 'Guardians of Faith or Oppressors of Rights?', the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) said religious institutions operating outside the purview of the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009 had a negative impact. According to the report, the exemption of madrassas from the RTE Act has deprived children attending these institutions of quality education. While Articles 29 and 30 of the Indian Constitution protect the rights of minorities to preserve their culture and establish educational institutions, NCPCR asserts that these provisions have inadvertently led to discrimination against children in madrassas, who miss out on formal education mandated by the RTE Act. The report pointed out that while the primary focus of madrassas is religious .
