Seven students of an agricultural university have been arrested here under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for allegedly raising objectionable slogans and celebrating the Indian cricket team's loss in the World Cup final, officials said on Monday. The arrested youths are studying at the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST)Kashmir, the officials said. The students were arrested after police launched an investigation into a complaint by a non-local student who alleged his collegemates had harassed him and raised objectionable slogans after India lost the final match and the cup to Australia. The students have been booked under various sections of the UAPA and the Indian Penal Code, the officials said.
The war against militancy in Jammu and Kashmir is not fully over and security forces may be suffering losses but will not back down from the fight, the union territory's Director General of Police R R Swain said here on Monday. The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Saturday approved the setting up of four new industrial estates in the Union Territory to boost investment and promote local employment, according to an official spokesperson. Approval for the setting up of new industrial estates at Budhi in Kathua district, Medicity Jammu in Jammu district and Chandgam and Lelhar in Pulwama district was given by the Administrative Council (AC) that met under the chairmanship of Lt Governor Manoj Sinha here, the spokesperson said. He said the new industrial estates will be developed on 1,379 kanals of land with an investment of Rs 136.65 crore. A Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorist was on Thursday killed in an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district, a defence spokesman said. Four Army personnel, including two captains of special forces, were killed and two others injured in the encounter on Wednesday. Fresh firing resumed this morning in Bajimaal area of Dharmsal belt after an overnight halt. Two Army personnel were killed during an encounter between security forces and terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district on Wednesday, officials said. The fierce gunfight was underway as two terrorists were trapped at the site, they said. The encounter broke out between terrorists and joint forces of the Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police in the Bajimaal area of Dharmsal following a cordon-and-search operation, the police said. In the gunbattle, one officer and a soldier lost their lives and another sustained injuries, officials said. The injured has been shifted to a hospital.
