Three foreign tourists, believed to be from Bangladesh, were charred to death in a major blaze in a houseboat on the famous Dal Lake on Saturday, officials here said. Burnt beyond recognition, the tourists' bodies were retrieved from the debris of the gutted houseboats near ghat nine on the lake, a popular attraction for tourists visiting Jammu and Kashmir's summer capital, the officials said. The cause of the fire, which engulfed five houseboats and as many huts attached to those, was not immediately known. The officials said preliminary investigations suggested that the fire broke out in one of the houseboats in the early hours due to malfunctioning of a heating appliance. The victims' DNA samples were extracted to establish their identities, the officials said, adding they are believed to be from Bangladesh and included a woman, according to the records being maintained by the houseboat operators. Between 2019 and 2022, the Jammu and Kashmir administration held four phases of the B2V programme an initiative to take the administration to people's doorsteps across 4,483 panchayats to address genuine development-related and other needs of the public. The Union Territory's administration is considering the delimitation exercise for municipal wards and panchayat segments in the backdrop of a delimitation exercise that was carried out by the Election Commission for assembly and parliamentary seats, said the officials, requesting anonymity. A policeman was shot dead by terrorists on Tuesday in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said. Head Constable Ghulam Mohammad Dar was shot at by the terrorists outside his residence at Kralpora in Pattan area of the district, the officials said. They said Dar was rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to injuries. This is the third such terrorist attack in as many days in Kashmir valley. An inspector of Jammu and Kashmir Police was shot and critically wounded by a terrorist in downtown Srinagar on Sunday, officials said. The officer, identified as Masroor Ahmad Wani, was playing cricket at the Eidgah playground when the lone terrorist fired three shots in the eye, abdomen and hand from close range. The BSF on Friday said the unprovoked firing by Pakistan Rangers along the International Border in Jammu targeting Indian posts and civilian areas continued for close to seven hours. In an official statement, the Border Security Force (BSF) said the Pakistan Rangers fired mortars and used heavy machine guns, leading to two non-fatal casualties. BSF Constable Basva Raj suffered minor splinter injuries in both hands due to shelling. A local, Rajni Devi of Arnia, suffered minor injuries, it said. The force said the Pakistani firing continued for close to seven hours, starting around 8 pm on Thursday and extending up to 2:45 am on Friday. Jammu & Kashmir Bank on Friday reported a 57 per cent jump in net profit to Rs 381 crore for the September quarter on a healthy growth in interest income and a fall in bad loans. The bank had posted a net profit of Rs 243 crore in the year-ago period. During the quarter, total income rose to Rs 2,954 crore from Rs 2,445 crore a year ago, J&K Bank said in a regulatory filing. Interest income during the July-September quarter grew to Rs 2,764 crore as against Rs 2,299 crore in the same period a year ago. Gross non-performing assets (NPAs) were reduced to 5.26 per cent of gross advances as of September 30, 2023 over 7.67 per cent by the end of September 2022. Net NPAs were also brought down to 1.04 per cent as compared to 2.10 per cent in the same period previous fiscal.
