Fadnavis to ask Karnataka to stop work at Alamaty till Maha finishes study

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said the state will ask Karnataka to stop the work of the raising of the height of Alamaty dam on the Krishna river till an ongoing study to assess its flood impact in Sangli and Kolhapur is completed. Replying to a question in the state Assembly, Fadnavis said if the Karnataka government did not heed Maharashtra's request, it will approach the Supreme Court. The state government had appointed a panel under the chairmanship of Water Resources Department's former principal secretary Nandkumar Wadnera to study the impact of Karnataka raising the height to 524 metres and its effect on flooding in Kolhapur and Sangli, Fadnavis said. K'taka to ask Centre to restore home for thousands of displaced families

The Karnataka government on Wednesday said it would appeal to the Central government for its approval to rehabilitate thousands of families displaced by a power project in Shivamogga district. "The government is seized of the matter and is in touch with the Central government to resolve the issue," said State Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister J C Madhuswamy in the Assembly. The Minister was replying to BJP MLA from Sagar in Shivamogga, Hartal Halappa. Halappa pointed out that over 7,000 farmers and their families were displaced from 9,000 acres of forest-land by the Sharavathi power project in the early 1960s. Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday said services of the remaining 30,867 "Pourakarmikas" (civic workers) working in the State will be regularised in the coming days. He also felt that they should be addressed as "Poura Naukaras" and not "Pourakarmikas", stating that calling them by a different name will give them a sense of self-respect and dignity. He was speaking after distributing the appointment letters to the civic workers of various local bodies here. "There are 42,000 civic workers working in the State, of which the services of 11,133 people have been regularised. The services of others will be regularised in the coming days," Bommai said. Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Tuesday said the entire state was happy over the resolution passed by the state legislature on the border dispute, and he was sure that no land would be ceded to Karnataka. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde earlier in the day moved a resolution in both houses which said the state shall pursue legal remedies to incorporate in Maharashtra 865 Marathi-speaking villages in border areas which are presently part of Karnataka.
