A 56-year-old man wasallegedly stabbed to death by some people, including husband of a local corporator, in Bandra when he tried to intervene in a scuffle over a social media post, police said Saturday. Police have arrested seven persons in connection with the incident that occurred on May 31 night. It is not yet clear whether the arrested persons included the husband of the corporator and AIMIM leader Saleem Qureshi. A police official said the complainant Rafique Saiyad has been uploading video posts claiming "illegal activities" by some builders in the area on a social networking site. In one such post, he mentioned that the local corporator is also hand in glove with one such builder, which enraged Qureshi, he said. As a fight broke out between Saiyad and Qureshi on Friday night, one Sheikh Zafar alias Babu Bhai tried to rescue Saiyad, the official said. Eleven alleged drug peddlers were arrested in separate incidents in Jammu, police said on Saturday. About 2.4 kg of heroin and Rs 16.95 lakh in cash was recovered from them, they added. According to SSP Jammu Tejinder Singh, a gang of drug peddlers was busted in the city and seven people including two women were arrested. Based on a tip-off, a joint team of Special Operation Group conducted raids and made the arrests, the SSP said, adding that 1.6 kg of heroin and Rs 2.95 lakh in cash was recovered from them. Those arrested were identified as Mohd Iqbal Wani, Nisar Ahmed Genai and Ashraf Bhat from Pulwama, Kulvinder Kour, Seema Rani and Rajkumar from Punjab and Sanjay Kumar from Jammu, the SSP said. Three vehicles in which they were travelling from Kashmir to Punjab were also seized, the officer added. A pack of stray dogs Saturday attacked and killed a woman when she was on her way to attend nature's call in Odisha's Kalahandi district, police said. The incident took place at Banjibahal village under Golamunda block in Kalahandi district when 57-year-old Bhumisuta Majhi had gone near the pond. A pack of 8 to 10 stray dogs attacked and pounced on the woman and left her bleeding in different parts of her body, the police said adding that she died on the spot. By the time, local people reached the spot hearing her scream, she was dead. A similar incident was reported in Kalahandi district two months ago when a nine-year old girl died after being attacked by stray dogs at Khasiguda village.
Goa Police on Saturday booked city Mayor Uday Madkaikar, newly-elected Congress MLA Atanasio Monserrate and former deputy mayor Yatin Parekh for allegedly molesting a woman outside a casino office in the state capital.Speaking to ANI, Superintendent of Police said: "The First Information Report was registered after a woman, who was protesting against the partial demolition of a casino office's facade, filed a complaint against the trio, accusing them of molesting her during the fracas which was playing out on the sidelines of the demolition."An FIR has been registered under section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 354 (outraging modesty), 504 (breach of the peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.Police have started the preliminary investigation, a Goa Police said.
The body of an unidentified woman was found in farmlands near Mandapeta town of Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari district.The locals informed the police about the body. Mandapeta CI Kishore Babu and Sub Inspector B Rajesh Kumar later reached the spot and started the investigation."We got information about a dead body in suspicious conditions. So, we came here along with DSP. Here we found the dead body of a woman with burnt injuries in the farmlands. We have taken a report from the tenant farmers who work here. A train hawker whose video mimicking politicians while selling toys had gone viral on the social media platforms, was produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class court by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) on Saturday.Speaking to ANI, RPF official said: "Avdhesh Dubey was apprehended at Surat Railway station on Friday. A Nepali citizen, allegedly involved in many robbery cases, was arrested Saturday after being declared a proclaimed offender for skipping court proceedings, police said. According to a senior police officer, Deepak Bahadur and his accomplice Vishal were arrested in 2015 for allegedly robbing Rs 30 lakh from an officer in Pitampura. Bahadur and Vishal were later granted bail. Following this, Bahadur skipped court proceedings, following which he was declared a proclaimed offender on August 28, 2017. A cash reward of Rs 25,000 was declared by the Delhi Police on his arrest, an official said. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rajesh Deo said acting on a tip-off, a trap was laid at Majnu ka Tila on Saturday and Bahadur was arrested. During interrogation, it was revealed that Bahadur had come to India and started in different restaurants. Thereafter, he joined a group of local boys here and indulged in robberies and other illegal activities, Deo said.
Senior NCP leader Praful Patel, summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with an alleged UPA-era aviation scam, Saturday said he would be happy to cooperate with the agency to help it "understand the complexities of the aviation sector". The ED has asked Patel, who was the civil aviation minister in the UPA government, to appear on June 6 as part of its money-laundering probe related to alleged losses suffered by national carrier Air India in an alleged multi-crore aviation scam. "(I am) Happy to cooperate with the Enforcement Directorate to help them understand the complexities of the aviation sector," Patel, a Rajya Sabha member, said in a statement here. The anti-corruption wing of the CBI here has registered a case against nine people, including a customs official, in connection with a gold smuggling case through the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. According to the Central Bureau of Investigation, credible information was received by the Anti-Corruption Branch in Kochi that Radhakrishnan, Superintendent, Customs, Air Intelligence, Thiruvananthapuram Airport and eight others entered into a criminal conspiracy and smuggled out gold worth several crores of rupees from April 27 to May 13 this year through the airport. In the FIR filed in the Special CBI Court in Thiruvananthapuram, the CBI said Sunil Kumar and Sareena Shaji in connivance with Radhakrishnan tried to smuggle out 25 kg of gold bars valued more than Rs 8.17 crore through the airport on May 13 without paying any customs duty. A 35-year-old man allegedly shot his wife and four-year-old daughter to death before killing himself at Ladpur village here, police said Saturday. The bodies of Dinesh Kumar, his wife and daughter were found by Kumar's brother when he went to their home on Saturday morning, police said. A handwritten note, purportedly by Kumar, was recovered from the house where in he take responsibility for the deaths, they said. Officials said Kumar, a security guard, used his licensed revolver for the killings, officials said. "The matter is under investigation," said Jhajjar Assistant Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar. The bodies were sent to the civil hospital for post-mortem. It is being explored as to why Kumar took the extreme step, officials said.
The Tripura High Court has rejected the anticipatory bail petition of IPFT MLA Dhananjoy Tripura who is accused of raping and deceiving a woman by not marrying her. Justice Arindam Lodh on Friday rejected his bail petition, saying the accused was a powerful person. Public Prosecutor Babul Chowdhury told reporters that the MLA is absconding. The legislator had claimed that he was framed in the case and opposition parties were trying to malign his image. In her complaint, the woman claimed that she was "socially engaged" to the IPFT MLA from Rimavalley constituency. She said that the accused maintained an intimate relationship with her, but later refused to tie the knot. The MLA was booked for raping and deceiving the woman. The IPFT is an ally of the ruling BJP in the state.
