Forensic lab confirms Waghmare shot&killed Gauri Lankesh

The Special Investigation Team probing the Gauri Lankesh murder case got a major breakthrough with a Gujarat based forensic lab confirming that Parashuram Waghmare shot and killed her here on September 5 last year. SIT sources said the entire sequence of events was reconstructed and a video of it along with CCTV footage on the day of incident sent to the Directorate of Forensic Science, which confirmed that the man in both the visuals was the same. "The FSL lab confirmed that the person who appeared in both visuals was the same. It establishes our line of investigation," said the SIT officer, requesting anonymity. Gauri Lankesh, known for her progressive and fearless writing, was shot dead at close range by unknown assailants at her home here on September 5 2017. Kalaskar was the second shooter to fire at Dabholkar: CBI

Sharad Kalaskar was one of the two shooters who allegedly killed anti-superstition activist Narendra Dabholkar in August, 2013, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) told a Pune court Tuesday. The court remanded him in the central probe agency's custody till September 10. The other alleged shooter, Sachin Andure, is now in judicial remand. Kalaskar is an expert in "weapon handling" and was involved in "making of bombs", the CBI told Judicial Magistrate (First Class) S M A Sayyad. "During the investigation, it was revealed that Kalaskar was the other shooter, who fired two bullets at Dabholkar along with Andure (who allegedly fired one round)," said CBI lawyer Vijaykumar Dhakne. The agency wanted his custody to probe his role in the conspiracy further, Dhakne said. The conspiracy was hatched by Virendra Sinh Tawde (already arrested), Kalaskar and others, he said. The CBI has arrested an intelligence officer of the Narcotics Control Bureau on the charge of receiving bribe of Rs 50,000, officials said Tuesday. A lawyer who was allegedly receiving the amount on his behalf was also arrested, they said. BJP welcomes Hyderabad twin blasts verdict, Cong says such cases should be fast-tracked

The BJP welcomed Tuesday a court verdict convicting two Indian Mujahideen operatives for the 2007 twin bomb blasts here, but stressed such cases should be tried expeditiously, an opinion voiced also by the Congress. Court grants time to CBI to get sanction to prosecute accused in case against journalist

A special court Tuesday granted one month time to the CBI to procure requisite sanctions to prosecute an accused in a case against journalist Upendra Rai who was arrested by the agency for his alleged involvement in dubious financial transactions. Special Judge Santosh Snehi Mann, who was scheduled to take cognisance of the charge sheet in the case, allowed the CBI's plea seeking more time to get the sanctions to prosecute Bureau of Civil Aviation Security Assistant Director Rahul Rathore. In its application, the CBI said the request has been sent to the authority concerned and the probe agency was awaiting its nod in this regard. Besides Rai and Rathore, the CBI has also named a firm, Air One Aviation Pvt Ltd, its chairman-cum-managing director Alok Sharma as accused in its charge sheet. NIA court frames charges against six alleged ISIS members

A court in Kerala has framed charges against six youths, alleged to be ISIS terrorists, for trying to carry out terrorist activities in parts of southern India, according to an official statement issued Tuesday. A case was registered suo-motu by the National Investigation Agency on October 1, 2016 based on information regarding activities of some youths, who had the intention of furthering the objectives of the proscribed terrorist group in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the NIA said in a statement. The youths "had got together and formed an ISIS terror module named Ansarul Khilafa-KL over social media platforms and had made preparations to carry out terrorist attacks against prominent persons, including judges, police officers and politicians, and also against foreign nationals and rationalists," it said. 'Missing rifle of JK cop found near stream in Poonch'

The service rifle of a Jammu and Kashmir policeman, which had gone missing last week, was recovered from a desolate place in Poonch district, a senior police officer said Tuesday. The missing automatic AK weapon, belonging to a policeman, was recovered by a search party from near a stream in Shanker Nagar locality in the district. It was found kept hidden, Senior Superintendent of Police (Poonch) Rajiv Pandey said. The rifle went missing from the Poonch district police lines on August 28 following which an inquiry was ordered and the concerned policeman was placed under suspension. A special investigation team was also formed to recover the weapon. An investigation into the matter was launched. Heroin worth Rs 100 crore seized in J-K, four held

The Jammu Narcotics Control Bureau Tuesday claimed to have foiled an attempt to smuggle huge quantity of heroin here and arrested four people in thi0s connection. It recovered over 22 kg heroin and Rs 17 lakh cash form them. Three Kashmiri residents were arrested here for smuggling heroin worth Rs 100 cr from Handwara town in the state to Punjab. Two held guilty for Hyd blasts that killed 44, two let off

A metropolitan court here Tuesday convicted two 'Indian Mujahideen' operatives of murder and terrorism for the 2007 Hyderabad blasts where two powerful explosions ripped through a popular eatery and an open air theatre, killing 44 people and wounding 68, prosecutors said. Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge (in- charge) T Srinivas Rao pronounced Aneeq Shafique Sayeed and Mohammed Akbar Ismail Chowdhari guilty in the 11-year-old case, but acquitted two other accused Farooq Sharfuddin Tarkash and Mohammed Sadiq Israr Ahmed Shaik for want of evidence. A retired police sub-inspector was allegedly battered to death by his relatives in Teliyarganj area in the district following an argument over a long-pending property dispute, the police said Tuesday. One of the three accused involved in battering former SI Abdul Samad Khan was arrested on Tuesday, said Senior Superintendent of Police Nitin Tiwari.
