Hooda calls FIR in Gurugram land scam 'political malice'

Former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who has been named in an FIR filed in the Gurugram land grab case, claimed that the case was filed based on "political malice."Addressing a press conference here, Hooda said, "There's no scam. It's being done due to political malice. There was no wrongdoing during our regime. Had this been the case, we wouldn't have been spared so far. It's the result of the (BJP) government's frustration."Hooda further clarified that filing of an FIR cannot transcend into branding a person as an accused. "Complaint was by a private person. If there is FIR against you, it doesn't make you accused. Had there been any substance in it, the government would have filed an FIR. They are doing this to distract people from their failures," he said.An FIR was filed against Hooda, businessman Robert Vadra, DLF Gurugram and Onkareshwar Properties in Gurugram on September 1, alleging that Vadra's firm Sky Light Hospitality had purchased land in various places ..

Malegaon case: HC refuses to stay framing of charges against Lt Col Purohit

The Bombay High Court Tuesday refused to restrain a trial court from framing charges against Lt Col Shrikant Purohit and other accused persons in the 2008 Malegaon blast case. A bench of justices S S Shinde and Mridula Bhatkar, however, directed the trial court - the special National Investigating Agency (NIA) court here - to consider, in accordance with a previous Supreme Court order, the issue of 'sanction' of prosecution raised by Purohit. "The Supreme Court has also directed that trial in the case be expedited and hence, it would not be appropriate to grant the stay. The trial court will therefore consider the issue of the sanction as per the SC order and proceed further in the case," the bench said. The special court is expected to begin framing of charges in the case Wednesday. Purohit had approached the high court earlier this month. In his plea filed through advocate Shrikant Shivade, he had urged the high court to stay the framing of charges until the issue of his ..

American sentenced to hang in Malaysia for killing ex-wife

An American man was sentenced to death by hanging in Malaysia on Tuesday for murdering his ex-wife, but his lawyer said he was acting in self-defence and would appeal. Gerald Wayne Mickelson, 63, was convicted of strangling Guilda Mickelson in Kuala Lumpur in November 2016, his lawyer K A Ramu said. Mickelson, who had been working as a telecommunications consultant in Malaysia, was about to move to the Philippines to be with his new wife when his former partner called him. When Mickelson went to see her in a serviced apartment complex, the 62-year-old allegedly tried to kill him, resulting in a struggle that ended in her death, Ramu said. The lawyer said Mickelson had no motive to murder his ex-wife and even called the management of the building after killing her, rather than fleeing. An appeal is expected to be filed within the next two weeks. Malaysia has a mandatory death penalty for murder, which is always carried out by hanging.
