Man held for extorting gold after posing as custom officer

A 40-year-old man was arrested Saturday for allegedly extorting gold from a businessman after impersonating a custom officer, police said Saturday. The accused was identified as, Jarnail Singh, a native of Karnal district in Haryana, they said. He was previously involved in a cheating-cum-forgery case of the Economic Offence Wing of Delhi Police, police said. "On May 24, Afnan, the complainant, lodged a complaint stating that he runs a clothing business and he along with his two friends arrived at the Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station from Surat, Gujrat. He was carrying three gold bars of 200 g which he had kept in his trolley bag," Dinesh Kumar Gupta, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railway), said. Defence lawyer, Sanatan member arrested in Dabholkar murder case

The CBI Saturday arrested a lawyer representing some of the accused in the Narendra Dabholkar murder case along with a member of the right-wing organisation Sanatan Sanstha. Advocate Sanjeev Punalekar and Vikram Bhave, a member of the Sanatan Sanstha, are accused of helping in destruction of evidence, said an official of the Central Bureau of Investigation. The Sanatan Sanstha came under investigators' scanner after Dabholkar's killing. The duo was arrested in Mumbai and will be produced before a Pune court Sunday, the official said. Preliminary probe revealed that Punalekar and Bhave had links with the two men who allegedly killed Dabholkar and helped in destruction of evidence apart from providing other assistance, he said. Dabholkar, a renowned anti-superstition activist, was shot dead while he was out on a morning walk in Pune on August 20, 2013. Bhave is a convict in the 2008 Gadkari Rangayatan blast case, and currently on bail. After he was released on bail, Bhave penned a book .

CBI arrests six men for 'manipulating' online entrance exam of BITS,Pilani

The CBI has arrested six people, including the managing director of a Delhi-based education consultancy firm, for allegedly manipulating an online entrance examination of BITS, Pilani, officials said Saturday. Besides Bhaskar Choudhary, the managing director of Pathway Education Service having office at Bhikaji Kama place here, other arrested are-- Ketan Barot of Ahmedabad-based Disha Education, cyber experts Sheth Mohammed Usama and Virag Harendra Kumar Shah, owner of Ahmedabad examination centre Nishikant Sinha and its manager Darpan Shirish Pathak, they said. It is alleged that Choudhary in connivance with others was demanding around Rs 10 lakh from parents of a candidate for helping in BITSAT (the entrance exam) through unfair means, they said. Absconder arrested, two missing women recovered in J-K's Rajouri

An absconder was arrested Saturday after a five-year-long hunt, while two missing women were recovered in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. Gorav Sharma, a resident of Sangpur village of Nowshera, was evading arrest in connection with a case registered against him in police station Dharamshal in 2014, a police spokesman said. Sharma, who is facing charges under various sections of the Ranbir Penal Code, including wrong restraint and voluntarily causing hurt, was arrested during a raid by police in the Nowshera area, he said. The spokesman said police also traced out two women who were reported missing by their families in the district recently. 2 CPI(M) supporters held for attack on independent candidate

Two CPI(M) sympathisers were arrested Saturday for the alleged attack on an independent candidate on May 18, police said. The candidate had contested from Vatakara Lok Sabha constituency in northern Kerala. Ashwanth (20) and Sojith (25) were arrested based on CCTV footage, and were produced before court. Former municipal councillor C O T Naseer was attacked by unidentified people on May 18 and hospitalised. "We evaluated the CCTV footage and identified the culprits and apprehended two of them. Ashwanth was one of the three suspects who came on a bike and attacked Naseer," an investigating officer told PTI. Police constable terminated from service for assisting murder accused

A police constable was terminated from service here for allegedly assisting and providing shelter to a murder accused, officials said Saturday. The accused constable, Praveen, was involved in several criminal acts and gave shelter to notorious criminal and murder accused Ankit Bhadu last year, they said. Praveen had allegedly provided Bhadu a vehicle, mobile phones and other facilities after Bhadu murdered a man in Sriganganagar, they said. "The constable has been terminated from service after approval from the police headquarters," Bikaner SP Pradeep Mohan Sharma said. Bhadu was killed in a police encounter in Punjab in February this year.

3 beaten up for carrying beef in MP, cops arrest them and 5 attackers

Suspected cow vigilantes thrashed three persons in Madhya Pradesh's Seoni for allegedly carrying beef, following which the police arrested the assailants as well as the victims of the attack. Police said the three persons, who were beaten up, were arrested on May 22 as possession, transportation or sale of beef is illegal in Madhya Pradesh. Dabholkar murder case: Defence lawyer arrested by CBI

A lawyer representing some of the accused in the Narendra Dabholkar murder case was Saturday arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation, an official said. Advocate Sanjeev Punalekar and a Sanatan Sanstha member identified as Vikram Bhave were held from Mumbai and will be produced in a Pune court on Sunday, the CBI official said. He said preliminary probe had revealed that Punalekar was known to one of the shooters of Dabholkar. Dabholkar was shot dead while he was on a morning walk on the Onkareshwar Bridge in Pune on August 20, 2013.

2 arrested in connection with Dabholkar murder case

Women among 4 held for duping people on pretext of proving jobs abroad

Four persons, including two women, were arrested from Punjab's Patiala district for allegedly duping around 200 people of a total of over Rs 60 lakh on the pretext of providing jobs abroad, police said Saturday. The accused -- identified as Ishpreet Singh (22), Karan Kumar (28) and Akansha (22), residents of Patiala and Palak Sachdeva (22), a resident of Uttam Nagar -- were arrested on Wednesday, they said. Total 148 passports, one car, 13 mobile phones and 35 SIM cards were recovered from possession of the accused, police said. Three nabbed for burglaries in Latur

The crime branch of Latur police has claimed to have solved six cases of house break-in with the arrest of three men. Police also recoveredgold jewelery worth Rs 6.86 lakh from them, said district superintendent of police S Chaitanya Saturday. The accused were identified as Diya Singh Baryasingh Kalani, Arjunsingh Pirtisingh Kalani and Kisan Singh Ram Singh Tak. The gang allegedly committed burglaries in various areas including Vrindavan Residency, Sai Nagar, Samarth Nagar, Mahesh Nagar, Mauli Nagar and Sahyog Nagar. Local Crime Branch chief Rajendra Singh said the gang was suspected to be involved in many other burglaries. J-K: Police file charge sheet against accused in Bandipora rape case

Police Saturday filed a charge sheet against the accused person in the rape case of a three-year-old girl in Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir. "Police have filed a charge sheet in the case within 17 days in the special court of District and Session Judge Bandipora," Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Bandipora, Rahul Malik told PTI. Malik said the accused has been booked under section 376 of the Ranbir Penal Code and under sections 5(m) and 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Police have already arrested the accused person -- Tahir Ahmad Mir -- on the charges of raping the minor girl. Police had constituted a special investigation team (SIT) on 11 May to probe the incident. A medical examination of the accused was also conducted which revealed he was not a minor. Protests had rocked many parts of the Valley against the incident, with the people demanding an exemplary punishment to the accused.
