The Supreme Court Friday vacated its order granting protection from arrest to former Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar in the Saradha chit fund scam case. The apex court said its February 5 order granting interim protection to Kumar will continue for seven days from Friday to enable him to approach the competent court for legal remedy. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi asked the CBI to act in accordance with law in the case. One of the advocates who appeared for Kumar said that as per the apex court order, Kumar cannot be arrested in the next seven days. "We have withdrawn the protection given to Rajeev Kumar vide order dated February 5," the court said while pronouncing the order. A former South Korean vice justice minister has been arrested on allegations of bribery, including being provided with prostitutes by a construction contractor. Kim Hak-ui is a former prosecutor who briefly served as the number two at the justice ministry in 2013, during the administration of ousted former president Park Geun-hye. A woman was allegedly killed by her husband over a family dispute in Garhi Pukhta area of Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district, police said Friday. Sonam was strangled to death by her husband Abdul Kalam, 40, on Thursday in Bunta village of the district, they said. Victim's father Ali Hasan in his complaint to the police has alleged that Kalam, along with his family members, killed his daughter over a family dispute, Station House Officer, Garhi Pukhta police station, Vijay Kumar said. He said the body has been sent for post-mortem and the case is being investigated. Police are trying to nab the victim's husband who is absconding, Kumar said.

A New Yorker has been convicted of providing material support to Hezbollah. A jury returned its verdict Thursday against Ali Kourani in Manhattan federal court. Kourani could face life in prison at a sentencing scheduled for September. The Bronx man has been held without bail since his June 2017 arrest. Prosecutors say Kourani tried to support Hezbollah's Islamic Jihad organization. They say Kourani surveilled American targets, including military and law enforcement facilities in New York City. Authorities say the Lebanon-born Kourani received sophisticated military training overseas at least twice, including in 2000 at age 16. Two unidentified men Thursday midnight attacked a car in which BJP candidate Siddharth Kunkolienkar, who is contesting the bypoll for Panaji Assembly constituency, was travelling. As per the complaint filed at Panaji police station, the incident took place at Mala locality in the Panaji Assembly constituency when Kunkolienkar was returned after visiting a temple. "Two youths who were wearing helmets and standing on the roadside suddenly attacked the car in which I was travelling. They threw bottles on the car before fleeing on a motorcycle," Kunkolienkar claimed. A senior police officer said the complaint was registered against unknown persons and search is on to track them on the basis of the description provided by Kunkolienkar. Retired judge of Orissa High Court Justice Raghubir Dash has been authorised to act as the chairman of the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC). A notification issued by the State Law Department on Thursday said the Governor, exercising his powers conferred by the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, has authorised Justice Dash to assume the charge as the acting chairman of OHRC with immediate effect. Former Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court and ex- judge of the Supreme Court, Justice D P Mohapatra, was the first chairman of the commission, occupying the post from January 2003 to August 2007.
A 32-year-old man hacked his parents and wife to death with an axe following an argument with them over a domestic issue at Samri village in the district early Thursday, police said. He also assaulted his six-year-old son, who has been admitted to a hospital in Bhopal, police said. "The accused, Jitendra Purwa, entered into a heated argument with his wife Sunita (30) over some domestic issue. His father Jalam (60) and mother Sharda (55) intervened and tried to pacify him," Bareli police station inspector K S Mukati said. "However, he killed his parents and wife with an axe in a fit of rage," he said. After committing the crime, the accused fled from the spot, the inspector said. An accused in the August 2012 low-intensity blasts case in Pune surrendered before the special court here Thursday. The accused, Aslam Shabbir Shaikh, surrendered before special court Judge V S Padalkar after the Supreme Court refused to set aside the order passed by the Bombay High Court cancelling his bail. The trial of the case is being conducted by the special MCOCA court in Mumbai. Expressing doubt over the prosecution's case of linking Shaikh with the blasts, the high court had granted him bail in October 2015. The ATS, which probed the case, had sought the cancellation of his bail after he violated its term, chief public prosecutor Jaisingh Desai said. According to his bail term, he was required to visit the ATS police station, but he failed to do so. On August 1, 2012, a series of low-intensity explosions had taken place on Jungli Maharaj Road in Pune, injuring one person.

Frederic Pechier worked as an anaesthesiologist at two private clinics in Besancon, when seven patients, aged 37 to 53, went into cardiac arrest from 2008 to 2017. This week he was brought in for questioning over 66 more suspicious cases of cardiac arrest during operations on patients otherwise considered at low risk of such incidents.
