Woman who tried to sell her son, arrested

The Goa police, on Saturday, arrested a 32-year-old woman for selling her 11-month-old son for an amount of Rs.2 lakh.Alleged buyer, Amar Morje and two middlemen- Yogesh Gosawi and Anant Damaji who helped her strike the deal, were arrested yesterday after an NGO lodged a complaint.Inspector Harish Madkaikar of Ponda Police station told ANI that Shaila Patil, the mother of the child, took this step because she needed money.Her husband was not aware of the incident, said the police.The baby is now in the Children Welfare Committee, headed by Ponda police.Police have registered a case under anti-trafficking provisions of the Indian Penal code and Goa children Act.

EPESO official, 1 other arrested in bribery case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday arrested AK Yadav, Joint Chief Controller of a Chennai-based Explosive, Petroleum & Explosive Safety Organization (EPESO), and a private person, D. Sakthivel, in an alleged bribery case.EPESO comes under Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion.A case was registered against the public servant, and Sakthivel, private person of AR & Co., Perambalur and a middleman of another private firm of Chennai.It was alleged that the Yadav had demanded a bribe of Rs. 30,000 from Sakthivel for issuance of license under the Explosive Act. Both the accused were intercepted by the CBI and were arrested.Searches were also conducted at 11 places in Chennai, Jaipur and Chandigarh, among others.

Uttarakhand violence: Section 144 imposed in Rudraprayag

Section 144 was imposed in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district on Saturday following the incidents of violence in Agastyamuni town of the district which took place on April 6.The Uttarakhand Police also conducted a flag march in Agastyamuni and Gulabrai of Rudraprayag district.Earlier in the day, two people were arrested in connection with the violence which erupted in the town over a fake Facebook post alleging that a 10-year-old Hindu girl was raped by a Muslim man in the town.At least 15 shops owned by Muslim traders were also burnt down by few right-wing groups in the process.Scores of people gathered near the police station at Agastyamuni demanding justice for the alleged rape victim.

Chinese man held for trying to cross over to Nepal sans visa papers

A 25-year-old Chinese national was arrested here today while trying to cross over to Nepal without visa papers, a senior official said. Chan Lang, who was on his way to Nepal from Varanasi, was arrested by the Immigration department in the Sonauli area on finding he did not have visa papers, Sonauli check post officer S C Tiwari said. A case has been registered and the Intelligence Bureau informed of the matter, Tiwari added.

Father who allegedly caged son for 20 years arrested in Japan

A father who allegedly confined his mentally ill son in a small cage for more than two decades was arrested today in western Japan, police and news reports said. Police arrested 73-year-old Yoshitane Yamasaki on suspicion of imprisoning his son, now aged 42, at their house in the city of Sanda in Hyogo prefecture, a local police spokesman told AFP. Further details of the case were not available as the investigation is still underway, the spokesman said. According to local media reports, the son was forced to live inside a wooden cage -- one metre (3.3 feet) high and 1.8 metre wide -- built in a prefabricated hut next to the main house. The suspect has reportedly admitted the allegations. "I made my son live in a cage for more than 20 years because he has mental problems and acted up," the father earlier told city officials, according to public broadcaster NHK. Salman Khan released from jail after getting bail in poaching case

Bollywood actor Salman Khan was today released from the Jodhpur jail after being granted bail by a district and sessions court here in the 1998 blackbuck poaching case in which he was sentenced to five years in jail. Immediately after his release, Khan, 52, was driven under police escort to the airport here, a police official said. Khan walked out of the jail after the prison authorities received the court papers granting him bail, the official said. Earlier, district and Sessions Judge Ravindra Kumar Joshi allowed Khan's plea for bail and suspension of sentence for a month to allow him to appeal against his conviction and sentence. EPESO official among 2 arrested by CBI in bribery case

The CBI has arrested the joint chief controller of the Explosive, Petroleum and Explosive Safety Organization (EPESO), Chennai, and a private person in a bribery case, officials said here today. The CBI carried out searches today at 11 places in Chennai, Jaipur and Chandigarh, the agency's spokesperson said here. A K Yadav, Joint Chief Controller of Explosive, Petroleum and Explosive Safety Organization, Chennai, and D Sakthivel, a private person were arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 30,000 from a contractor, they said. A case was registered against Yadav and others alleging that he had demanded a bribe of Rs 30,000 for issuance of license under the Explosive Act. "Both the said accused were intercepted by the CBI and were arrested. Searches have been conducted at 11 places including at Chennai, Jaipur and Chandigarh, etc," the spokesperson said.

Central govt official held for accepting bribe

The CBI has arrested a Joint Chief Controller of Explosive, Petroleum and Explosive Safety Organisation here in a case of alleged bribery, the agency said today. AK Yadav, Joint Chief Controller of Explosive, Petroleum and Explosive Safety Organisation, Chennai, had demanded and accepted a bribe of Rs 30,000 from one D Sakthivel for issuance of licence under the Explosives Act, CBI said. "Both AK Yadav and D Sakthivel were intercepted by the CBI team and have been arrested," a CBI release here said. CBI Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has registered a case of corruption against the two persons, besides a 'middleman' Kumaresan, it added.

Rape case against Asaram: Court reserves order for April 25

A special SC/ST court here today reserved its order for April 25 in a 2012 rape case against self-styled godman Asaram after the final arguments were completed. Judge Madhu Sudan Sharma heard the final arguments from the prosecution and defence counsels for five months. The final arguments were completed today, victim's counsel P C Solanki said. The court reserved the order for April 25, he said. A teenage girl had accused Asaram of sexual assault at his ashram in Manai village near here. The girl, who belonged to Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh, was a student living in the ashram. Asaram, who is in jail since August 31, 2013, was charged under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, the counsel said. Mother kills two kids in Pak

A mother killed her two children in northwest Pakistan today, prompting the police to arrest her. The incident took place in Karbogha Sharif in Hangu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, police said. The deceased included a two and a half year old boy and an eighteen-month old girl, they said. She was arrested by the local police after a brief chase, police added. The reason behind the killing could not be ascertained.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has said that the case of missing arms of the 2nd Manipur Rifles Armoury will be thoroughly investigated and those involved in the case will be dealt with as per law. In a relief to Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, a sessions court here today granted him bail in the 1998 blackbuck poaching case in which he was sentenced to five years in jail. District and Sessions Judge Ravindra Kumar Joshi also allowed 52-year-old Khan's application for suspension of sentence for a month against his conviction. Undertrial injured in attack by fellow inmate in JK's Kathua

An undertrial, facing murder charges, was injured after being attacked by a fellow inmate inside district jail in Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir, police said today. Dilshad Hussain was attacked by Saddam with an iron rod inside the jail premises yesterday, a police official said. He said Saddam, who was recently shifted to Kathua district jail from Jammu after a fight with his fellow inmates there, was reportedly holding a grudge against Hussain over some issue. He hit Hussain on his back with an iron rod from behind after calling him out of his barrack, the official said. Hussain was rushed to district hospital, from where he was referred to Government Medical College hospital here for special treatment, he said, adding that his condition was stated to be "stable". Two cops awarded for thwarting robbery gang

The Delhi Police Commissioner awarded two policemen- Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Naresh Kumar and Head Constable (HC) Narendra Kumar- on Saturday with the 'Asadharan Karya Puraskar' and an out-of-turn promotion respectively for thwarting a gang of robbers, who, upon being intercepted, attacked the police personnel.The two officers, who were also assigned the task of gathering leads on a murder case, were on anti-robbery patrol on Rohtak Road last night when they came upon a group of suspicious youths.
