A 28-year-old married woman, who had reportedly eloped with a youth, was publicly flogged on the orders of a panchayat in Uttar Pradesh's Longa village, a police official said today. The incident took place on March 20 and it came to light after a purported video of her being beaten in full public view went viral, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Muniraj G said. The woman had reportedly eloped with a youth of her village on March 10 and then returned home on March 20, the officer said. On her return, the panchayat ordered the woman's husband to tie her to a tree and beat her, the SSP said. He said that a case has been registered against seven people of the village of which three, including her husband, have been arrested. Several organisation have condemned the incident. The district magistrate has announced a house under the Kashiram Awas Yojna and Rs 50,000 from the Red Cross Society for the victim, the SSP said.

A man died today after he lost balance and fell from a hill top in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district, police said. Kishore Kumar of Punjab, who had come along with family to pay obeisance at Mata Sukrala temple in Billawar tehsil of Kathua district, fell down into a gorge suffering critical injuries, they said. He was shifted to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, they said adding that further details are awaited.

A Supreme Court judge today recused himself from hearing a plea of Chhagan Bhujbal, former Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, challenging a Bombay High Court decision dismissing his petition for bail. Bhujbal has also challenged his arrest under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The bench headed by Chief justice Dipak Misra posted the matter for hearing on March 26 and asked it to be listed before an appropriate bench in which Justice Khanwilkar is not a member. The Supreme Court today disposed off a plea of an activist lawyer who was denied 'tatkal' passport on the ground of non-submission of Aadhaar, saying the issue has been settled as the government will now not seek the biometric identifier till the constitution bench decides the pleas against the scheme. Ganja valued at around Rs two crore was seized and two persons were arrested in connection with it in Odisha's Kalahandi district today, police said. Acting on a tip off, police detained a truck near Mading on Bhawanipatna-Raipur Highway and recovered around 39 quintals of ganja from the vehicle, said sub-divisional police officer Biranchi Dehuri. The contraband was packed in polythene bags and kept with sacks of ginger, he said adding the ganja is valued at around Rs 2 crore, he said. The police arrested the driver and helper of the truck which bore the registration number of Uttar Pradesh. Preliminary investigation showed the ganja was loaded near Similiguda of Koraput district and the truck was on way to Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, the SDPO added.
Seven people were arrested with demonetised notes of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 in Uttar Pradesh's Basti district, police said today. They were arrested near a school in Karanpur village. The notes had a face value of Rs 1.11 crore, they said. The matter is being probed, police added.
The special CBI court conducting the trial in the Sheena Bora murder case today allowed former media baron Peter Mukerjea to be produced before a Delhi court in the INX Media case. Karti Chidambaram, former Union finance minister P Chidambaram's son, has also been arrested in the INX Media case. "The Delhi court had issued a production warrant against Peter, and directed that he be produced before it. The Mumbai court has allowed the warrant, so he will be taken to Delhi between March 26 and April 3," a CBI official said. Indrani Mukerjea, Peter's wife and the prime accused in the Sheena Bora murder case, was arrested in the INX Media case last month. The INX Media case, registered by the CBI, relates to a Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval granted to INX Media, founded by the Mukerjeas, for receiving foreign funds in 2007. Hours after being granted bail by the Delhi High Court in the INX media case, Karti Chidambaram today filed anticipatory bail pleas in a city court in cases relating to the alleged irregularities in FIPB clearance to a company in Aircel-Maxis matter arising out of the 2G spectrum cases. Karti, son of former union minister P Chidambaram, filed his plea seeking protection of arrest before Special Judge O P Saini in the Aircel-Maxis matter, in which the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) have lodged cases in 2011 and 2012 respectively. The court is likely to hear the plea tomorrow. A Special Investigation Team has been constituted to trace the missing Lithuanian woman tourist who arrived in Kerala for Ayurvedic treatment recently, a top police official said today. DGP Loknath Behara today said a SIT has been formed to trace the woman, Liga Skromane, said to be suffering from mental depression. An award of Rs two lakh will be given to the person providing any clues about the missing woman, he said. The 33-year-old woman had come here along with her sister Ilzie and had gone missing from nearby Kovalam beach since March 14. Liga was staying at a private Ayurveda treatment centre at nearby Pothencode and had come to Kovalam from the treatment centre in an autorickshaw on March 14 morning. Tarun Tejpal, the founder of Tehelka magazine, today told the Supreme Court that there were inconsistencies in the statements recorded by the victim and the video recording in the rape case lodged against him by a former colleague. A bench of Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan was told by senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Tejpal, that there were inconsistencies in the video recordings and the statements of the victim recorded under section 164 of CrPC before the magistrate. "Your lordships will themselves have to see. There is glaring inconsistency in the statements and the video recordings," Sibal said. The court asked Sibal whether his application for discharge has been rejected by the high court. Sibal replied in affirmative and urged the court to look into the case records. The United States today imposed sanctions on 10 Iranians and an Iranian company for alleged hacking hundreds of universities in the US and abroad and the theft of "valuable intellectual property and data." The Mabna Institute engaged in "the theft of personal identifiers and economic resources for private financial gain" and for the benefit of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the US Treasury Department said. The Uttar Pradesh government today told the Supreme Court that a prima facie case is made out against former minister Gayatri Prajapati in the alleged gangrape matter in which he is one of the accused. The state government said that as per investigation, statements of the complainant and other witnesses, a prima facie case is made out against Prajapati who was a powerful minister in the erstwhile Samajwadi Party government.
