Three arrested for damaging compound wall light of mutt

Three persons belonging to Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam, a fringe outfit, were arrested today on charges of pelting stone on the wall light at Sri Shankara Mutt in Salem district, police said. Based on the complaint, DVK leaders Krishnan, Rajendran and Manoj were arrested on charges of damaging the compound wall lights, police said. Cases have been registered against them under Tamil Nadu Public Property Damage Act and IPC 506 (1)(criminal intimidation) police said.

Man arrested for making phone calls posing as PA to Vice-Prez

A 20-year-old man was today arrested on charges of making phone calls to public representatives and public servants in Telangana posing as PA to Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu, police said. P Naveen alias Arjun Rao from Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh was arrested based on a complaint filed by BJP MLA G Kishan Reddy, a police release said. In his complaint, Reddy, theparty floor Leader in Telangana Legislative Assembly, said the man had made phone calls to him and others after introducing himself as Arjun Rao, PA to Vice President and sought official favours. However, on inquiry it was found that no such person was working in the vice-president's office, he said in the complaint. The man was arrested and booked under various IPC sections, the release added.

Body of RTI activist found

The body of an RTI activist was found near a bridge in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district today, a senior police official said. Eastern Range Deputy Inspector General of Police A R Mawthoh said a metal wrench was found next to the body of Poipynhun Mawjaw and preliminary probe suggests that Mawjaw was hit on the head with that leading to his death. The motive of the murder is yet to be ascertained, the DIG said. Mawjaw had moved the high court against certain companies alleging that these firms set up plants on forest land violating rules. He also headed a social organization, the Jaintia Youth Front. His killing was condemned by fellow RTI activists in the state demanding top level inquiry into the case.

U'khand High Court: EVM tampering case to be heard on Apr10

The Nainital High Court has fixed April 10 as the next date of hearing in the Electronic Voting Machine(EVM) tampering caseThe matter pertains to seven pleas that were filed in the court, in reagrd to the case last year.The petitioners requested the court for immediate disposal of the pleas as per the provisions of the Representation of Peoples (RP) Act 1951.The Additional Solicitor General Satyapal Jain had appeared on behalf of the respondents.His appearance was also challenged by the petitioners on the basis of the directives given by the law ministry.The Congress party had alleged that the EVM's used in at least six of the constituencies in last year's assembly elections in the state had been tampered with.The Congress had lost the election to the Bharatiya Janta Party(BJP).

HC initiates suo motu proceedings against suspended Kerala DGP for remarks against judges

The Kerala High Court today initiated suo motu contempt proceedings against suspended Director General of Police (DGP) Jacob Thomas for his alleged remarks against two judges of the court. On a petition filed by a lawyer, a division bench of Chief Justice Antony Dominic and Justice Dama Seshadri Naidu directed Thomas to appear before the court in person on April 2. The petitioner has alleged that Thomas made contemptuous personal remarks against the two judges in a complaint to the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC). Thomas had made imputations against the judges, who passed orders against him in a case, according to the petitioner. The Kerala government had suspended Thomas, the seniormost IPS officer in the state cadre, from service in December last year for his "anti-government" remarks. Gunmen kill 5 of family in Pak

Unidentified assailants gunned down five members of a family including two women and as many children today in Pakistan's restive northwest tribal region. The assailants barged into a house in Chamkani area on the outskirts of Peshawar early this morning and opened indiscriminate fire, police said. The attackers managed to flee the spot after committing the crime, they said. The reason behind the killing was not immediately known but prima facie, it appeared to be the outcome of a family feud, the police said. The investigators have ruled out any robbery attempt. In a separate incident, a senior police officer was killed when he stormed the hideout of an alleged kidnapper in Kohat district. The accused was also killed in the gunfight, police said.

Musharraf seeks security from Pak govt upon return from Dubai

Pervez Musharraf has sought adequate security from the government for his return from the UAE to appear before a special Pakistani court in a high-profile treason case, according to a media report. The 74-year-old retired general has been living in Dubai since last year when he was allowed to leave Pakistan on the pretext of medical treatment. The former president was indicted in March, 2014 on treason charges for imposing emergency in the country which led to the confinement of a number of superior court judges in their houses and sacking of over 100 judges. Musharraf's lawyer had moved a petition to the interior ministry, stating that the former president faced security threats. SC issues directives to check misuse of SC/ST Act

With a view to prevent the misuse of provisions of Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989 (SC/ST Act), the Supreme Court on Tuesday held that there is no absolute bar for granting anticipatory bail in a matter under the Act.The Apex Court also added that a public servant can be arrested after grant of approval by some senior officer.The bench comprising of Justices Adarsh Kumar Goel and Uday Umesh Lalit further noted that to avoid false implication of an innocent, preliminary enquiry will be done by the DSP to find out whether the allegations make out a case under the Atrocities Act and that the allegations are not frivolous.The top court further observed that the Government official cannot be prosecuted on mere allegation of committing an offence under the Act without the sanction of appointing authority.

Three arrested for snatching items in Jammu

Three men were today arrested for snatching various items of people, particularly women, in Jammu city, a police official said. According to a complaint of a woman, three men, riding on a motorcycle snatched a purse of her friend when they were returning home from the Gandhi Nagar area of the city on March 14, he said. Police investigated the case and arrested them for their involvement, he said, adding that they have been identified as Shubam, Rashpal and Akash. A case has been registered against the trio, the official said. Police seized items including mobiles, ATM cards and other items worth Rs 50,000, he said.

Madras HC grants bail to accused in Brahmin man attack case

The Madras High Court today granted bail to all four accused in a case relating to the March 7 attack on a Brahmin man, whose sacred thread was cut, here. When the bail pleas of Ravanan, Umapathy, Prabakaran and Rajesh came up, Justice A D Jagdhish Chandira granted conditional bail to the four and ordered them to stay in Salem and sign the register before the police there until further orders. Volunteers of Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, a fringe outfit, had cut the sacred thread of a Brahmin man in Triplicane area here on March 7. The incident had come against the backdrop of protests against BJP leader H Raja's comment on social media advocating the removal of rationalist leader Periyar's statues in Tamil Nadu, for which he had later expressed regret. Inter-state drug peddler held

An inter-state drug peddler was today arrested here on charges of selling high-end narcotic drugs in various cities, a top police official said. Police seized 15 LSD blots, 10 amphetamine tablets, one kilo weed (ganja) from his possession and booked him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. K Ganeshkumar alias Bobby, hailing from Andhra Pradesh, was arrested for purchasing narcotic drugs like cocaine and LSD blots from Goa and selling them at Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Delhi and other cities along with his associates, Rachakonda Police Commissioner Mahesh M Bhagwat said. Ganeshkumar after getting the drugs from Goa in turn used to supply them with weed, the police official said. He worked for a short period in MNC firms. During that time he used to visit Goa along with his friends for consuming drugs and got acquainted with drug peddler Arbid Mir, a native of Kashmir, the official said. CBI mentions 2G spectrum case before Delhi HC

The Central Board of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday mentioned the 2G Scam acquittal case before the Acting Chief Justice in the Delhi High Court.Earlier on Monday, Enforcement Directorate (ED) also moved the Delhi High Court against the acquittal of former telecom minister A Raja and others in the 2G spectrum case.In a surprising judgment, a special CBI court had last year acquitted all key accused, including A Raja, in the Rs 30,000 crore 2G spectrum allocation case.Special CBI judge O.P. Saini had cleared the 19 accused of all charges, rejecting the case presented by the agency, citing lack of "prosecutable evidence".Earlier on March 12, the Supreme Court directed the CBI and ED to complete probes and close all cases related to the 2G scam within six months.

Fisheries department inspector held for taking Rs 20K bribe

An inspector of the fisheries department was today arrested for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 20,000, Lokayukta police said. Acting on a tip-off, the police laid a trap and arrested the inspector, Surendra Kumar Bakshi, when he was accepting Rs 20,000 from the complainant from the bus stand area here, Lokayukta police inspector Manoj Gupta said. Bakshi had demanded Rs 40,000 from the complainant for an official work but later settled for Rs 20,000, the official said. A case under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered, he said, adding a probe was on.

BJP MLA Pijush Hazarika files police case against Tarun Gogoi

BJP MLA Pijush Hazarika today filed a police complaint against former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi for reportedly accusing Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of being involved in a number of financial and criminal cases when he was a minister in his cabinet. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Dispur) Sujit Saikia comfirming the filing of the complaint, told PTI here that Hazarika has complained against Gogoi alleging that if the reported statements made by him at a press conference in New Delhi are true, then he (Gogoi) colluded with Sarma and saved him after he committed a series of crimes. He said a case has not been registered as yet. "It is kept for enquiry before registering the FIR ... It is difficult to register a case in Dispur police station because the original cases, which are mentioned in the complaint, were all registered in different other places. The investigation of those are on." Talking to reporters after filing the complaint, Hazarika told .
