In Rajasthan, woman among two convicted in rape, abduction case

A court here convicted two persons, including a woman, in the abduction and rape case of a 13-year-old girl. While the court sentenced Jhalawar's Chitawa village resident Inderraj Gujjar (25) to life imprisonment till the remainder of his natural life, Seema Saina (27), a resident of Salora village in Jhalawar, was given 10-year rigorous imprisonment. In the order that was delivered on Friday, the man and the woman were also told to pay a fine of Rs 95,000 and 50,000, respectively. The convicts had abducted the minor from Kanwas in Kota district in May 2015. The police had rescued her after two months from Jhalawar district.

Clash over eve-teasing allegations in UP's Muzaffarnagar

Two groups clashed and pelted each other with stones over an alleged eve-teasing incident at the Ramlila Tila locality here, police said Saturday. According to SHO Anil Kapervan, the incident took place Friday evening and a police team was rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. The trouble started when a youth allegedly teased a woman, resulting in a protest by her family, police said. In another incident, a man was arrested on the charge of eve-teasing. The incident took place at Shamli's Majra Road locality Friday, police said. According to SHO Subhash Rathor, suspect Suraj, along with another youth, had come on a bike in the locality and teased some students. While Suraj was arrested following the registration of a case, the other suspect was absconding, police said.

Wife of chopper scam accused Gautam Khaitan gets bail in black money case

A Delhi court Saturday granted bail to Ritu Khaitan, wife of AgustaWestland chopper scam accused Gautam Khaitan, in a black money and laundering case. Special Judge Arvind Kumar granted relief to Ritu Khaitan after she appeared before the court in pursuance to summons issued after filing of charge sheet. In the same case, the court had on April 16 granted bail to Gautam Khaitan and had put various conditions on him, including that he will not tamper with the evidence or try to contact or influence the witnesses and join the investigation as and when called. The fresh criminal case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) was filed by the Enforcement Directorate against Gautam Khaitan and his wife on the basis of a case lodged by the Income Tax Department against him under the provisions of the Black Money (Undisclosed Foreign Income and Assets) and Imposition of Tax Act, 2015.

MJ Akbar appears in court to record statement in defamation case

A Delhi court is recording the statement of former Union Minister MJ Akbar today in connection with a defamation case filed by him against journalist Priya Ramani after she complained of sexual misconduct.Ramani and other senior journalists will also appear before the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Samar Vishal today.She had on April 10 pleaded not guilty before the court and claimed trial after the court framed defamation charges against her on a criminal complaint of Akbar.In the last hearing, ACMM Vishal had also granted a permanent exemption to Ramani from personal appearance in the hearings to follow.In February, Ramani was granted bail on a personal bond of Rs 10,000.Ramani was the first woman to accuse Akbar of sexual harassment during the #MeToo campaign.Akbar, the former Minister of State for External Affairs, had filed a defamation case against the journalist for accusing him of sexual misconduct.The allegations levelled against him forced him to resign from

Woman hurt in explosion from cracker waste

A woman was seriously injured in an explosion from firecracker waste in Thanabhawan town of Shamli district, police said Saturday. Additional Superintendent of Police Rajesh Shrivastava said the incident took place Friday when the woman set the cracker waste on fire. "The cracker waste was lying with a pile of garbage near a school," he added. The woman, identified as Lata Balmiki, was shifted to a hospital and investigation into the case is on, Shrivastava said.

Bus with over 40 passengers overturns in Noida, several injured

A bus ferrying over 40 female employees of a private company overturned here Saturday morning after it was hit by a speeding truck, resulting in injuries to several passengers, police said. The incident took place around 6 a.m. at a roundabout in Sector 93 here, under Phase 2 police station limits, an official said. "The bus had 42 passengers, all women employees of a private firm, who were on their way to work when their vehicle overturned after being hit by a truck," SHO Phase 2 Farmood Ali Pundir said. All the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital, while those critically wounded were taken to Kailash Hospital, he said. "The truck involved in the incident has been impounded and its driver detained," the SHO said. There is no law and order situation at the site and further probe is underway, Pundir said, adding there has been no official complaint in the matter.

Hyderabad man gets life imprisonment for killing wife over dowry dispute

A local court on Friday sentenced a man to life imprisonment after being convicted in the murder of his wife.Marishetty Shiva Rama Krishna subjected his wife Laxmi Ganga Bhavani to domestic violence over demands of additional dowry and killed her at his residence in Chinthal on January 21, 2013.The convict hit his wife with a hammer on her breasts and face and subsequently strangled her to death. He then packed her body in a water drum and dumped it in a forest area of Nallavelli village in Jinnaram Mandal of Medak district.A case was registered in Jinnaram Mandal of Medak district and was later transferred to Jeedimetla Police Station in Hyderabad. The man was arrested and sent to judicial custody. After the probe was completed, the Investigation Officer filed a charge sheet before Additional District Judge Court in LB Nagar.The judge convicted the accused, sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment and also directed him to pay a fine of Rs 1,500.

The US city of Minneapolis on Friday announced a $20 million civil settlement with the family of an unarmed Australian yoga instructor who was shot dead by a police officer. Mohamed Noor was convicted Tuesday of murder for the 2017 shooting that killed Justine Ruszczyk Damond, who had moved to the US to marry her fiancee. The 40-year-old was killed while approaching Noor's police car. She had called police to report a possible rape in the dark alley behind her home. Two married couples arrested for kidnapping baby in Delhi's Azadpur

Two couples, one of them childless, were arrested for allegedly kidnapping a two-month-old baby boy in northwest Delhi's Azadpur area, police said Friday. The arrested accused were identified as Surender Mehto, his wife Sinu Pema, Rahul and his wife Pinky, they said, adding that the child was recovered. A woman in her complaint alleged that at around 3 am on Thursday, she noticed her baby missing from an under-construction house where she was sleeping with her husband and their three children, police said. During the investigation, the spot was inspected and CCTV footage of nearby places were scanned where in one of the footage, the accused was seen taking the child away, a senior police officer said. Man accused of trying to sell Assange info questioned in Spain

A man accused of trying to sell information about Julian Assange reportedly obtained via a surveillance system in the Ecuadoran embassy in London has been questioned in Madrid, a judicial source said Friday. The journalist is one of several Spaniards claiming they have videos and personal documents of Assange from when he was in Ecuador's embassy in London. The source, who refused to be named, said the man was detained, questioned by a Madrid judge and released pending further investigation on Wednesday. That followed a complaint made to the police by Kristinn Hrafnsson, WikiLeaks editor-in-chief, the source added. Hyderabad: Passenger arrested for smuggling gold worth Rs 19,71,433 at airport

The customs department arrested a passenger carrying gold weighing 655 grams and worth Rs 19,71,433, concealed in check-in baggage at the Rajeev Gandhi International Airport here on Friday.The passenger arrived in Hyderabad from Dubai by flight number EK528 was arrested by officials with the gold concealed in belt buckles and purse. Former AG Rohatgi: No outside member can join commitee probing allegations against CJI

Former Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi on Friday said that no outside member should join the in-house committee which is investigating charges of alleged sexual harassment against Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi.Replying to demands from various quarters to include a member from outside the Supreme Court into the committee Rohatgi said, "I am seeing reports of some NGOs and others that this inquiry should stop now and some outsider should join. Punjab man arrested for wife's murder at Goa resort

Goa Police Friday arrested a Punjab resident for allegedly killing his wife at a resort in the beach village of Arpora in North Goa district on April 27. Sukhwinder Singh was arrested with the help of Punjab police in Ludhiana six days after the alleged crime. He and his wife Alka Saini, who hailed from Himachal Pradesh, had checked into a five-star resort at Arpora on April 20, said police inspector Navlesh Desai of Anjuna police station. The killing came to light on April 27 when the hotel staff opened the room with a master key to clean it. It is suspected that after stabbing Alka in the neck and killing her, Singh fled immediately. Probe into why he committed the crime was on, inspector Desai said.
