Man gets life sentence in loan fraud case

A special court for CBI cases here has sentenced a 38-year-old man to life imprisonment for fraudulently obtaining loans of over Rs 2.80 crore from the Andhra Bank in 2008. Then manager of the bank's Ghodbunder branch in neighbouring Thane was awarded 10 years' jail term, while three others were sentenced to three years' imprisonment for conspiracy on Thursday. Besides awarding him life imprisonment, CBI Judge S R Tamboli also imposed a fine of Rs 3.13 crore on prime accused Rajendra Patil. Bandlamudi Mahipal, the former branch manager, was ordered to pay Rs 3.40 lakh. The accused were held guilty under IPC Sections 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery of valuable security), and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) as well as under the Prevention of Corruption Act. According to the prosecution, Patil approached Andhra Bank's Ghodbunder Road branch for a vehicle loan and a loan against property in 2008. High-tech telepresence facility inaugurated in Delhi HC

Former Supreme Court judge Justice (retd) Madan B Lokur inaugurated a high-tech telepresence facility in the Delhi High Court on Thursday. Justice Lokur, who is the chairman of the e-Committee of the apex court, inaugurated the telepresence facility along with the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, Rajendra Menon. A statement issued by the high court said the Cisco IX 5000 Telepresence System is a single-codec triple-screen system combining high-fidelity audio and video collaboration functionality. The telepresence room has a seating capacity of 18 persons. It also has 4K ultra-high definition cameras and theatre-quality audio. "This is a historic moment for the Indian judiciary and in particular, for the High Court of Delhi, which has been a pioneer in computerisation projects for the judiciary," the statement said. Mozambican court jails 37 members of radical Islamist insurgency

A Mozambican court has sentenced 37 people in prison for their involvement in deadly radical Islamist attacks that have killed about 200 people over the past 18 months, a court official said Thursday. The accused have been jailed for between 12 and 40 years for taking part in attacks in the volatile northern Cabo Delgado province, a gas-rich region near the Tanzania border. Of the 37 convicted, ten were sentenced to a cumulative count of 40 years in prison for crimes including voluntary homicide and possession of prohibited weapons, Judge Geraldo Patricio said during his ruling on Wednesday. Another 24 defendants were jailed for 16 years for crimes against the state and association to commit a crime. Three others, aged under 21, received 12 year sentences. Need to preserve sanctity of SC as institution, says Justice A K Patnaik

Former Supreme Court judge, Justice A K Patnaik Thursday said allegations against Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi "have to be inquired into" to "preserve the sanctity" of the institution in the interest of the country and the Constitution. Delhi court allows accused in EC bribery case to travel abroad

A Delhi court Thursday allowed a senior advocate, who is an accused in the Election Commission bribery case involving AIADMK (Amma) faction leader T T V Dhinakaran, to travel abroad. Special Judge Arun bhardwaj permitted Chennai-based B Kumar to travel to the US from April 27 to June 8 to visit his son who is living with his family there. "The apprehension of the prosecution that applicant/accused will flee from justice is not based on any material. No tangible ground is made by the prosecution for not granting permission to applicant/accused to go abroad. Money-laundering case: ED files supplementary chargesheet against Chautala, names immovable assets

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a supplementary chargesheet against former Haryana chief minister O P Chautala in connection with a money-laundering case on Thursday. The agency mentioned in the chargesheet that immovable assets worth Rs 3.68 crore were attached by it on April 13 in relation to four properties in Delhi, Panchkula and Sirsa. It said the investigation conducted so far under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) had revealed that Chautala laundered the disproportionate assets by depositing illegal cash in the bank accounts of his and his family members. The ED said this was done to avoid the back trail of money, merge the illegal cash with genuine income and show it as untainted. This laundered money was further used to purchase new properties or carry out construction on the already acquired properties. CAT stays suspension of IAS officer who checked PM's copter

The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) here Thursday stayed the order of the Election Commission suspending IAS officer Mohammed Mohsin for checking prime minister Narendra Modi's helicopter in Odisha. The officer from Karnataka cadre, deployed in Odisha as a general observer, was suspended on April 17 for checking Modi's helicopter in Odisha's Sambalpur in violation of norms for dealing with SPG protectees and sent back to the state. The CAT maintained that during an election process while reasonable assurances of protection and security must be made available to SPG protectees, it cannot be said "they are eligible for anything and everything." Justice Patnaik to inquire claim of larger conspiracy to frame CJI: SC

The Supreme Court Thursday appointed former apex court judge Justice A K Patnaik to hold an inquiry into the sensational allegations of a lawyer about "larger conspiracy" to frame Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and fixing of benches in the top court. The apex court made it clear that inquiry by Justice (retd) Patnaik shall not be with respect to the "alleged misbehaviour" involving the CJI, against whom allegations of sexual allegations have been levelled by a former top court employee. A three-judge special bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra said that outcome of inquiry by Justice (retd) Patnaik "shall not affect the in-house procedure/inquiry which is pending in the administrative side." 56-year-old man arrested for killing his mother and younger brother

A 56-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing his mother and younger brother by stabbing them multiple times in Dwarka's Bindapur area, police said Thursday. The accused has been identified as Sunil Arora, a resident of Vishwash Park in Uttam Nagar, they said. Complainant Naresh Singh, who is a resident of Vishwash Park in Uttam Nagar said when he was standing near Gali number 5 on Tuesday at around 8.45 pm, his neighbour Rajender came and asked for help. Four armed naxals including a woman cadre have been arrested inBhadradri-Kothagudem district of Telangana, police said Thursday. Acting on specific information, the four belonging to of Janashakti (Chandra Pullareddy Bata) group were nabbed in Gundala mandal Wednesday when they were trying to flee after seeing the police, Bhadradri-Kothagudem District Superintendent of Police Sunil Dutt said. M Sammaiah alias Kumar, State secretary of the group, along with three others were arrested and four weapons, including one 8 mm rifle, one Bharmar gun and 90 rounds of ammunition were seized from them. The four had allegedly hatched a plan to extort money from local contractors, police said. Sammaiah worked in Janashakti, CP Bata, New Democracy outfits from 2005 to 2019 and was allegedly involved in offences like murders, extortions among other cases.

Mumbai blasts convict dies in Nagpur prison

Abdul Gani Turk, a 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict lodged at the Nagpur Central Jail, died here Thursday, an official said. Turk, 68, was lodged in the Nagpur Central Jail since 2012. Convicted for planting a bomb at Century Bazar, one of the 12 sites devastated by serial blasts in the country's financial capital on March 12, 1993, Turk was serving life imprisonment after his death sentence was commuted. At least 257 people died in the blasts. Jail superintendent Rani Bhosle told PTI that Turk was not keeping well for some time and was taken to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) here on April 22. Later he was brought back and being treated at the prison hospital. He fell unconscious Thursday morning and rushed to the GMCH where he was declared dead around 12.45 pm, she said. He had suffered paralysis last year. The cause of death will be known after autopsy report is available, the superintendent added.

Man on run after killing wife in Mumbai arrested in UP

A 35-year-old man, who was on the run after allegedly killing his wife in suburban Wadala, was Thursday arrested from Ghaziabad in Uttar Praedsh, police said. The arrest was made by sleuths of Wadala Truck Terminal (WTT) police station. "The accused, Fazhul Rahman Qureshi alias Kaptan Qureshi, had killed his wife Rita Jaiswar (32) by slitting her throat last Saturday over some domestic issue concerning money," a police official said. The incident had taken place at Kamlanagar at Wadala East. "After the murder, he fled from the area. However, police kept an eye on his movement by tracking the location of his mobile. They found that he was moving towards Delhi," Rajendra Sangle, senior inspector of WTT police station, said. Police found that he had travelled via Surat, Vadodara and Meerut. Two teams were sent on his trail- one in railway and another in plane. "Based on a specific information, police nabbed him in Ghaziabad, where he was staying at his relative's residence.
