SC issues contempt notice to Rahul Gandhi for remarks on Rafale verdict

The Supreme Court Tuesday issued contempt notice to Congress President Rahul Gandhi for his remarks on the Rafale judgment, which the apex court had said were "incorrectly attributed" to it. The top court said it will hear on April 30 the criminal contempt petition filed by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi against Gandhi along with the pending review petition against the December 14, 2018 verdict in the Rafale jet deal. The top court rejected the plea of Gandhi to close the criminal contempt petition filed by Lekhi. "On hearing senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi on behalf of Gandhi in the contempt petition we deem it fit to issue notice to the respondent (Rahul) Gandhi," a bench headed by Chief Justcie Ranjan Gogoi said. "We also direct the registry to list the review petition along with the contempt petition next Tuesday," the bench also comprising Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna said.

Judge denies lower bond for ex-priest accused of abuse

A St. Louis County judge has refused to lower bail for a former Catholic priest who was previously imprisoned and labeled sexually violent. Fred Lenczycki of suburban Chicago was charged in February with two counts of sodomy for allegedly abusing two boys in the early 1990s at a north St. Louis County parish. He is jailed on USD 500,000 cash-only bond and sought an unspecified reduction. Circuit Judge Gloria Glark Reno declined the request at a hearing Monday. Lenczycki is 74. He was removed from the ministry in 2002, when he was charged with sexually abusing three boys in Hinsdale, Illinois, in the 1980s. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years in prison. Court and church files say Lenczycki admitted abusing up to 30 boys in Illinois, Missouri and California over 25 years.

5 SC benches start proceedings late

Five Supreme Court benches, presided over by five senior-most judges including CJI Ranjan Gogoi, Tuesday started court proceedings an hour later at 11:30 AM. However, the other Supreme Court benches started functioning at 10:30 AM, the usual time for resumption of judicial proceedings in the apex court. The Supreme Court display board notified that from court number 1, presided over by the CJI, to court number 5 would not be holding judicial proceedings till 11:30 AM. According to sources, deliberations among top judges on certain issues were on. On Monday, all the 15 Supreme Court benches had commenced judicial proceedings at 10:45am, 15 minutes after the usual time. The delayed start of court proceedings had led to speculation among lawyers about some meetings of judges. A three-judge bench headed by CJI on Saturday had held an unprecedented hearing in the wake of allegations made against the CJI. Akhilesh Yadav alleges EVM malfunction across India

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Tuesday alleged that EVMs were "malfunctioning or voting for the BJP" across the country, terming it a criminal negligence. SC seeks response from advocate who alleged foulplay in sexual harassment charges against CJI Gogoi

The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought response from advocate Utsav Bains, who claimed that there is a conspiracy to frame up the Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi in a sexual harassment case.A three-judge bench comprising Justices Arun Mishra, Rohinton Fali Nariman and Deepak Gupta issued a notice to Bains and posted the matter for hearing tomorrow.The Bench also sought the presence of the advocate Utsav Bains before it on April 24.The Apex court bench was hearing a case relating to the sexual harassment allegations against Gogoi. 22-year-old woman shot dead by jilted lover in UP

A 22-year-old woman has been shot dead in a village here by her jilted lover after she reportedly refused to marry him, police said Tuesday. The incident took place in Bahupura village under the Bhop police station area on Monday evening, Superintendent of Police (Rural) Alok Kumar Sharma said. The kin of the victim, identified as Suviti, staged a protest here and refused to hand over the body to police, he said. Later, senior police officers assured them of taking action against the accused, identified as Amit Kumar, and sent the body for a postmortem, the SP added. The girl's family alleged that police had failed to provide protection to her despite being informed about the activities of the suspect. A team has been constituted to nab the suspect, who is on the run, police said.

Top Myanmar court rejects appeal of award-winning Reuters reporters

Myanmar's Supreme Court rejected the latest appeal Tuesday by two Pulitzer-prize winning Reuters journalists who were jailed for seven years on charges linked to their reporting on the Rohingya crisis, as hopes now turn to a presidential pardon. Reporters Wa Lone, 33, and Kyaw Soe Oo, 29, have been behind bars since their arrest in December 2017 under the Official Secrets Act. They were convicted of possessing classified documents relating to security operations in Rakhine during a brutal military crackdown against the Rohingya that forced some 740,000 to flee over the border into Bangladesh. The initial ruling in September was upheld by the Yangon High Court in January. On Tuesday, the reporters were not at the Supreme Court in the capital Naypyidaw to hear the ruling that once again went against them. Sexual harassment allegations against CJI: SC seeks response from lawyer who claimed conspiracy

The Supreme Court Tuesday sought response from a lawyer, who had made a sensational claim that there was a conspiracy to make CJI Ranjan Gogoi resign by "framing him" in a false case of sexual harassment. A three-judge special bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra issued notice to lawyer Utsav Singh Bains and sought his response with regard to his claim that he was also offered Rs 1.5 crore to represent a former apex court woman employee and arrange a presser against the CJI at the Press Club of India here. The bench, which also comprised Justices R F Nariman and Deepak Gupta, has now fixed the case titled as a matter of "great public importance touching upon the independence of judiciary", for hearing tomorrow at 10:30 AM. The lawyer had filed an affidavit on Monday following the unprecedented hearing on Saturday during which the CJI had said a larger conspiracy was behind it and that he would not stoop too low even to deny these allegations.

Texas killer dies, leaving open questions about 11 slayings

A convicted murderer serving 70 years for a 1978 slaying near Houston who was also under investigation in the unsolved killings of 11 missing girls has died in a Texas prison.
