A panel of judges rejected Manning's appeal against her March 8 jailing for contempt after she refused to give testimony in the case, on the grounds that she believes the grand jury system is unfair and used to persecute activists. The chief of an interstate narcotic drug cartel, who was carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh, was arrested on Sunday, the Delhi Police confirmed."On April 21, Tasleem Qureshi aka Mamu was apprehended from the highway near Muradabad, Uttar Pradesh as he was waiting for his contact to proceed further at a safe hideout," the police said.During the investigation, Qureshi said he was introduced to Mukund of Manipur by one Malik, who he said was a distant relative of his. Mukund used to supply heroin from the North-East at cheaper rates, Qureshi said.The police had already arrested two members of the group and seized 32 kilograms of high-grade heroin and a car for transporting the illegal consignments. Four persons were killed after the car they were travelling in fell into a gorge in Haripur Dhar area of Sirmour district of Himachal Pradesh, police said Monday. The accident took place on Thiyan Bagh-Gahal Road when the driver lost control and the car rolled and fell into the 500-metre deep gorge on late Sunday night, they said. The occupants opf the vehicle, who died on the spot, were on their way to attend a marriage function in Gahal village, police said. A software engineer has allegedly killed his wife and three children in Ghaziabad, police said Monday. On the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, Sumit Kumar, the accused, served sedative laced drinks to his wife Anshu Bala (32), son Prathimesh (5), daughter Akriti and son Arav (twins aged 4 years) and then slit their throats, City, Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar. Police have recovered an equal weight of gold from a man who is suspected to have stolen three golden crowns, totally weighing 1.3 kg, from a shrine here and melted it, a TTD official said Monday. The Tirupati police, which investigated the theft of crowns from the ancient Sri Govindaraja Swamy temple in February, handed over the gold recently, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams executive officer Anil Kumar Singhal told reporters here. A junior engineer of the National Institute of Fashion Technology was Monday arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe. According to a CBI press release, accused Pramod Kumar had asked Rs 10,000 as bribe from the complainant for clearing bills of work done at NIFT, Gandhinagar. Kumar was caught red-handed in a trap laid by the CBI, it added. He was booked under Prevention of Corruption Act and remanded in judicial custody till May 2 by a local court, said the release.
A woman was arrested here Monday for allegedly demanding Rs 2 crore from Union minister Mahesh Sharma after threatening to make public an "objectionable" video from a preelection meeting of the BJP leader, police said. The woman is allegedly part of a gang helmed by a man who ran a local news channel that was shut down after demonetisation, they said. The video in question related to a preelection meeting of Sharma with some people which the gang had threatened to share with the media, a senior police official said. "The woman reached Kailash Hospital, run by Sharma, today (Monday) with a letter from her boss. The Delhi Police has arrested two men, who were members of Ashok Pradhan gang and wanted in cases of attempt to murder and armed robbery, officials said Monday. The accused have been identified as Naveen (21), a resident of Jhajjar district in Haryana and Rahul Dagar (20), a resident of Jaffarpur Kalan, Delhi, they said.
