Modinagar police arrested a 37-year-old man on Sunday for allegedly killing a septuagenarian woman here, officials said. Savitri Devi, 73, was found dead with her throat and wrist slit on Wednesday morning, officials said. The body was found by her neighbours in a room near the courtyard in Devi's home, officials said. An FIR has filed under section 302 of IPC, based on the deceased's son Tejpal's complaint, they said. "Devi's body was lying in a pool of blood on her cot. Her hands and legs were tied with a sari. In early April, Iraq's specialised terrorism courts began preparing cases against nearly 900 Iraqis accused of joining IS. They had been caught in Syria by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters, and transferred to Iraqi authorities. A policeman died Sunday after his motorcycle was hit by a car in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district, police said. Shafoor Ajaz Wani was riding a motorcycle when he was hit by a private car at Veerwan in Baramulla, a police spokesman said. He said Wani was injured in the accident and rushed to a hospital where he succumbed. A case under relevant sections of law has been registered at police station Baramulla and the car involved in the accident seized, the spokesman said, adding the driver fled the spot.
A 28-year-old woman was seriously injured after being shot at by unidentified men in her house here, police said Sunday. The incident took place on Saturday at Rumalpuri village in the Miranpur area here, they said. The RJD will seek an appointment with the Jharkhand Governor Monday to apprise her of the administration's decision of not allowing visitors to meet jailed party president Lalu Prasad, a day after his aides were not allowed to see him at a hospital here. The Birsa Munda Central jail authorities on Saturday pasted a notice on the wall of the hospital ward, where Lalu Prasad is undergoing treatment, barring visitors from meeting Prasad, citing "law and order" concerns. The notice signed by jail superintendent A K Chaudhary said visiting convicted Prasad would not be permitted on April 20. "They are trying to demoralise our leader. Can they give an evidence of law and order problem during previous meetings by visitors? Two people were killed and another injured as a speeding car overturned after hitting into a tree in Rajasthan's Sikar district, police said Sunday. The accident occurred on Saturday night when the victims were on their way to Neem Ka Thana from Khetri, they said. Two alleged narcotic smugglers were arrested after 51 kg of poppy straw and eight gram heroin were recovered from their vehicle in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district, police said Sunday. Over 3,100 special kits for collecting blood and semen samples, besides other evidence, to carry out immediate investigations into sexual assault cases have been distributed among States and Union Territories by the Ministry of Home Affairs, officials said Sunday. The Sexual Assault Evidence Collection Kits (SAECK) or 'rape investigation kits' are designed to carry out immediate medico-legal investigation and aid in furnishing evidence in sexual assault and rape cases. The MHA has procured 3,120 SAECK and distributed to the States and UTs, a senior MHA official said. Each of these kits comprises essential items that will aid in furnishing evidence such as blood and semen samples in sexual assault and rape cases, thus helping the prosecution to gather evidence against the accused. The kits are expected to help law enforcement agencies to ensure effective investigation in a timely manner for better prosecution and convictions in sexual assault cases, the official said. Excise department has ordered mandatory removal of smoking rooms from bars, pubs, and restaurants, in connection with their license agreements.According to a directive issued in this regard, the move has been taken to curb violations of second-hand smoking.As per the Karnataka Protection of Non-smoker's act 2001, no hotels are allowed to have smoking rooms. Adherence to this rule is also an important consumer right issue for all passive smokers.Smoking in public places is already prohibited under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) of 2013. The COTPA also bans all forms of advertising and promotion of tobacco products.The sale to or by minors and within 100 yards of educational institutes is also prohibited.
