Schoolgirl dies after being raped and set afire in UP

A schoolgirl died after she was allegedly raped and set ablaze by a man in a village in the Dildarnagar police station area here, police said. Superintendent of Police Arvind Kumar Chaturvedi said the incident took place on Friday night. The girl was sleeping in her house when the man, who's her neighbour, barged in and allegedly raped her. He later poured kerosene on her, set her on fire and fled, the SP claimed. The girl was rushed to hospital where she succumbed to injuries. On the complaint of her brother, a case has been registered and efforts are being made to nab the accused.

Man carrying smuggled gold held at Guwahati railway station

A man has been arrested by the Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel from Guwahati railway station for possessing smuggled gold. The GRP personnel recovered six gold bars, weighing 499 gm, from the man on Saturday night, the Superintendent of Railway Police (SRP) of Guwahati, Hemanta Kumar Das, said. The man had come here from West Bengal, the SRP said. "The value of the gold bars would be around Rs 16.5 lakh," Das said. It is suspected that the gold was smuggled into the country, he added. The customs department has been informed and as per procedures, the man along with the seized gold, would be handed over to them, Das added.

10-yr-old girl raped, killed in MP; body dumped in tank

A 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped and killed and the body dumped in an unused biogas tank in Katni district of Madhya Pradesh, police said on Sunday. After a foul smell emanated from the tank located underground in Barhi area, around 80 km from here, a farmer looked into it on Saturday and spotted the body, Katni's Additional Superintendent of Police Sandeep Mishra said. "The post-mortem report confirmed the girl was raped and throttled to death before the body was dumped," he said. The girl went out of her house on Wednesday with her uncle, who resided in their neighbourhood in the district, but did not return home. When her parents enquired, her uncle told them he thought that she had returned home, the police official said. The family members then searched for the minor and after being unable to find her, they lodged a police complaint the next day. 17-yr-old girl detained for kidnapping minor boy in Maha

A 17-year-old girl from Thane district in Maharashtra has been detained for allegedly kidnapping a minor boy for ransom, police said on Sunday. According to the 11-year-old boy's mother, who works as a tailor, her son went to his tuition classes on Saturday afternoon. Later in the evening, she received a call from an unidentified person demanding Rs 6 lakh if she wanted her son back, Shanti Nagar police station's senior inspector Mamta D'Souza said. The female caller also threatened that the boy would be killed if they approached the police, and asked his mother to bring the money in a bag and keep it on a bike near Shivaji Chowk in Bhiwandi town, she said. When the boy's mother rushed to inform her husband, who works at a jewellery shop, she found her son alone and crying near the shop on Quarter Gate road, D'Souza said. Dalit man killing case: Bhim Army activists threaten to agitate

A day after a Dalit man was allegedly killed by his landlord here, Bhim Army activists on Sunday threatened to start an agitation demanding strict action against the accused, police said. The body of the 26-year-old was found lying in an agricultural field on Saturday, with multiple stab injuries on his neck, they said. According to a complaint lodged by the victim's family, he left home with his landlord on Friday and did not return till late night. The landlord is at large, they said. The Dalit body activists reached the Titawi police station and threatened to agitate if the accused was not arrested soon. SC commutes man's death penalty to life term referring to his reformative poems

The Supreme Court has commuted to life term the death penalty awarded to a man for murdering a child, saying he wanted to reform himself and poems written by him in jail indicate that he realised his mistake. A bench headed by Justice A K Sikri noted that Dnyaneshwar Suresh Borkar was 22 years old when he committed the crime and while in jail, tried to "join the society" and become a "civilised man". The bench, also comprising justices S Abdul Nazeer and M R Shah, said Borkar was lodged in jail for last 18 years and his conduct showed that he could be reformed and rehabilitated. "... We are of the opinion that, in the facts and circumstances of the case, capital punishment is not warranted. Striking the balance between the aggravating and mitigating circumstances, we are of the opinion that mitigating circumstances are in favour of the accused (Borkar) while commuting the death sentence to life imprisonment," the bench said. Campaign launched to check crimes against women, children

Chhattisgarh Police have launched a campaign to curb crimes against women and children by keeping a constant tab on such cases and taking prompt action over them. Under the 'Samvedna' campaign launched on Friday, the state police will also deliberate upon measures to check such crimes and programmes will be conducted to sensitise women and children about their safety and protection, Director General of Police (DGP) D M Awasthi told PTI. "Such cases will be monitored on a daily basis at the district-level and once in a month at the state-level. Police officials have been asked to take prompt action on a complaint and to handle such cases with sensitivity," he said. Two minor girls allegedly molested by hostel warden, her husband in Alwar

Two minor girls of a government-run hostel were allegedly molested by its warden, her husband and his friends in Rajasthan's Alwar district, police said on Sunday. The hostel warden used to call the girls, students of Class 12, to their home and molest them. Her husband would also pressure the girls to befriend his friends, Alwar Additional SP Mahesh Tripathi said. "The girls alleged that the hostel warden, her husband and others had been molesting them and other girls for few days," he said. The girls gave a written complaint endorsed by a few other hostlers to their school principal who went to the hostel on Saturday and informed the police. A court here has issued show cause notice against a man for giving false evidence in a local BJP leader's murder case. Additional District Sessions Judge Gaurav Kumar Shrivastava has acquitted three accused due to lack of evidence. The court has issued show cause notice against complainant Shyambir under section 344 CrPC for giving false evidence in court. He has turned hostile. HC quashes FIR against couple for child labour, asks to plant 100 trees

The Delhi High Court has agreed to quash an FIR against a couple, who had employed a minor for household work, and directed them to plant 100 trees and pay Rs 1.5 lakh to the victim. Justice Najmi Waziri also directed two other persons, who were agents and through whom the minor girl was employed at the couple's house, to offer manual labour for plantation and care of the trees. The court imposed a fine of Rs 1.5 lakh on the couple and Rs 10,000 each on the two agents and directed that the amount be paid to the minor. "In the circumstances, the FIR and all proceedings emanating from there are quashed subject to costs of Rs 1.5 lakh to be paid by petitioners No. 1 and 2 (couple) to respondent No.2 (victim)...," the court said. Delhi: Groom's aunt dies after being hit by bullet as guests fight over song requests to DJ

A woman was killed in a marriage function following an altercation between two groups over a song request to the DJ, in Mangolpuri on Saturday.Around 3 am, an altercation broke out between Sajjan and two youth - Aakash and Sandeep - over a song being played by the DJ.The deceased, identified as Sunita and her husband Sajjan were attending her nephew's wedding.Police said that Aakash and Sandeep pulled out pistols and fired at Sajjan. Sini Mathews, the Indian American adoptive mother of three-year-old Sherin Mathews, who was found dead at a culvert in Texas in October 2017, has been released from prison. After 15 months in jail, charges against Sini for child endangerment were dropped due to insufficient evidence. Minor killed by friend over money dispute

A 16-year-old boy was killed after being attacked with a sharp object allegedly by his acquaintance following an altercation between them over money in outer north Delhi's Barwala village, police said Saturday. The incident took place on Friday night when the minor had gone to attend an engagement function with his friend who also sustained minor injuries in the incident, they said. While returning from the ceremony, the duo had an argument over settling Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000, Gaurav Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer north), said. Woman shot dead by 2 men while shielding husband during altercation

A 32-year-old woman was allegedly shot dead accidentally while shielding her husband during an altercation with two men over playing music at her nephew's wedding in outer Delhi's Mangolpuri area, police said Saturday. The incident took place on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday and the accused duo were arrested from Chandigarh later in the day, they said. Hyderabad student dies of heart attack in exam hall, probe initiated

A student died allegedly of a heart attack in an examination hall before his 12th board exam on Saturday.The 19-year-old had apparently complained of chest pain a few minutes before the exam but refused to go to the hospital and entered the examination hall. Chanchala Babu, Circle Inspector, Ramgopalpet police station said, "19-year-old Gopi Raju was going to write his exam when he complained of pain. His peers suggested him to go to the hospital but he refused. He went into the examination hall and collapsed at his bench, after which he was taken to a hospital where he was declared brought dead."Doctors said Raju could have died of a heart attack.The body has been sent to Gandhi hospital for post mortem, and a case under relevant sections of the law has been registered by the police.Further investigation in the matter is underway.
