Gangster arrested for extortion

Akil Lakdawala, brother of fugitive gangster Ejaz Lakdawala, has been arrested for allegedly trying to extort money from a builder here, a senior police official said Friday. Ejaz Lakdawala had been calling several builders in the western suburbs since December and demanding 'protection money', he said. On February 26, a builder approached the anti-extortion cell of Mumbai Police and lodged a complaint against the gangster. Ejaz had threatened him over phone and demanded Rs 50 lakh, the builder told the police. Probe revealed that Akil was also involved in the extortion racket, and following a tip-off, he was nabbed from Mira Road area on the outskirts of Mumbai Thursday, the officer said. Akil had a similar case registered against him in the past and was on bail. He was booked under IPC section 386 (extortion) and 120 (criminal conspiracy) and produced before a court which remanded him in police custody till March 8.

Interception order passed keeping terrorism, legitimate state interest in mind, Centre tells SC

The Centre Friday told the Supreme Court that its order allowing agencies to intercept, monitor and decrypt computer systems of the citizens was passed keeping in mind "legitimate state interest" and threats like "terrorism" and it did not violate the right to privacy. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), in its affidavit filed with the apex court registry, sought dismissal of the PILs challenging its December 20, 2018 notification authorising 10 central agencies to intercept, monitor and decrypt computer systems saying that these would be done by "an authorised agency". "The grave threats to the country from terrorism, radicalisation, cross border terrorism, cyber crime, organised crime, drug cartels cannot be understated or ignored and a strong and robust mechanism for timely and speedy collection of actionable intelligence including signal intelligence, is imperative to counter threats to national security. Man arrested for killing rival group's member

A man was arrested for allegedly being involved in killing a rival group member and dumping the body at an isolated place in Mathura after burning to destroy evidence, police said Friday. The accused identified as Pankaj Kumar, a resident of east Champaran district in Bihar, they added. According to police, both the Bihar-based gangs were involved in smuggling illicit liquor in the state. A case of kidnapping of Amit Kumar Singh was registered at the Saraiya police station in Muzaffarpur district of Bihar. Later, his burnt body was recovered from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, police said. Kumar was arrested on February 27 on a tip off that he would come to meet someone near a monastery opposite ISBT in Kashmere Gate, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rajesh Deo said. 5 held for bike robberies

Two gangs of alleged motorcycle thieves were busted and five people arrested in Rajasthan's Bundi district on Friday, police said. Acting on a tip-off about some suspected youths in search of customers to purchase motorbikes, the police carried out a raid in Dablana area. Three persons -- Harpreet alias Siddhu (24), Mahavir Mali (45) and Murlidhar Gujjar (35) -- were arrested and six motorbikes were recovered, said Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Samandar Champawat. In Bundi town, two youths -- Mahendra Meena alias Bhagirath (24) and Lekhraj Meena alias Sonu (20) -- were arrested and five motorcycles were recovered from their possession, the DSP added.

Young couple jumps into well along with baby, all three dead

A young husband-wife duo allegedly jumped into a well at a village in Wadhwan taluka of Surendranagar district along with their two-month-old child, following which all three died, police said on Friday. Although the incident came to light on Friday, police suspect that the couple had apparently jumped into the well a few days back. "The bodies of the couple and their baby were recovered from a well near Baldana village in Wadhwan taluka today. They were missing since February 24," Wadhwan police inspector H R Jethi said. The deceased were identified as Nanka Sapania (20), his wife Puniben (19) and their son Sahil, he said. Teenager 'beaten up' for teasing girl in Kerala dies

An 18-year-old boy, who was beaten up by his neighbour for allegedly teasing a girl, died at a hospital, police said Friday. The teenager had been undergoing treatment at a hospital in the state capital, where he died Thursday night, they said. Vineeth, a warden of a district jail here was taken into custody in connection with the death. The warden had slapped the boy alleging that he had made fun of his relative. The ITI student, who was attacked last week, had fallen unconscious and was under treatment since then. The relatives of the boy said when he regained consciousness for a brief while, he had told his mother that he had not made fun of the girl. Police said a case under section 302 of IPC was registered on the basis of the statement of an eyewitness.

Body of Pakistani prisoner sent to Attari border: Raj police

The body of a Pakistani prisoner who died following a scuffle with fellow inmates in Jaipur Central Jail on February 20 was Friday sent to the Attari border to hand it over to the Pakistani authorities, police said. Shakar Ullah (50), a member of terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba succumbed to injuries on February 20. He was lodged in the Jaipur Central Jail since 2011 and was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2017 by a court under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The body of the Pakistani prisoner was sent to Attari border at 5 pm Friday, Raj Kumar Sharma, SHO, Lal Kothi police station said. The body was kept at the SMS Hospital mortuary till February 28 after postmortem by a medical board, he said. Medical jurist N L Dasania said the body was handed over to the Lal Kothi police as per the directions of the court. IG (Jail) Rupinder Singh said the body will be handed over to the authorities at the border in the presence of Pakistan's high commission officers.

Death for repeat offence not knee-jerk reaction to Delhi gang-rape case: Maha govt to HC

The Maharashtra government told the Bombay High Court Friday that the criminal law amendment introducing death penalty for a repeat offence of rape was not a "knee-jerk" reaction to the Delhi gang-rape incident. Advocate General Ashutosh Kumbhakoni stated this in response to the defence's argument in the Shakti Mills rape case challenging the validity of IPC section 376(E). Kumbhakoni said the amendment was "well thought out" and not a "knee-jerk reaction". Advocate Yug Chaudhry, who represents three convicts in the case who have been awarded death sentence, had argued that section 376 (E) is arbitrary and does not prescribe a punishment proportional to the crime. The amendment was passed in haste following the December 2012 Delhi gang-rape case, he had said. Youth gored to death, 3 others hurt in 'jallikattu' in TN

A 23-year old man was gored to death while three others were injured in bull taming sport 'jallikattu' near Lalgudi in the district Friday, police said. Manikandan suffered serious injuries in his stomach area as a bull attacked him and flung him at the sport organised in connection with a temple festival. He died while being taken to hospital. The bull also injured a 22-year old man while two others were hurt later. All have been hospitalised, police added.

Delhi High Court Judge Valmiki Mehta dies of heart attack

Justice Valmiki Mehta, judge of Delhi High Court, passed away Friday morning after suffering a heart attack. He was cremated in the evening at the electric crematorium in Nigam Bodh Ghat here. Born on June 6, 1959 in Mumbai, Justice Mehta had completed his schooling in Vishakhapatnam and did graduation in B.Com (H) from Sri Venkateshwara College, Delhi University (DU) and LLB from Campus Law Centre in DU. He enrolled with the Delhi Bar Council in 1982 and started practising. Justice Mehta is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters-in-law. Justice Mehta's son Tanmay Mehta is married to Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi's daughter. Justice Mehta had practised in Delhi High Court, district courts and various tribunals in civil matters and was designated as a senior advocate in 2001 at the age of 42 years. Sharif moves SC against rejection of bail plea in corruption case

Pakistan's former premier Nawaz Sharif, who is currently serving a seven-year jail term in Lahore for corruption, Friday filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the dismissal of his bail plea by a high court. In the petition filed through his counsel Khawaja Haris in the apex court, Sharif said the Islamabad High Court (IHC) rejected the application despite the fact that he needed immediate medical attention due to his deteriorating health conditions. A two-member bench of the IHC comprising Justices Aamer Farooq and Mohsin Akhtar Kayani rejected his bail plea on medical grounds on February 25. In its decision, the court said that Sharif, 69, could not be given bail on health grounds as he was already being treated at a hospital. Rigorous jail term for Gujarat Cong MLA in illegal mining case

A Gujarat court on Friday awarded two year and nine months rigorous imprisonment to local Congress MLA Bhagvan Barad in an illegal mining case registered in 1995. Judicial Magistrate of Sutrapada taluka court S L Mehta pronounced the MLA guilty under section 379 of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with punishment for theft, said public prosecutor D J Trivedi. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 2,500 on Barad, he said. Barad, 60, is the sitting MLA from Talala in Gir-Somnath district. "The magistrate awarded rigorous imprisonment of two years and nine months to Barad, who was accused of stealing limestone worth Rs 2.83 crore through illegal mining on a government land in Sutrapada. The Supreme Court Friday asked a woman lawyer, who was allegedly assaulted by some cops outside the Delhi High Court premises last night, to approach a senior officer of Delhi Police for lodging FIR on the incident. A bench comprising Justices S A Bobde and Deepak Gupta took note of the submissions of the woman advocate, who has also filed a sexual harassment case against an eminent jurist, that she was brutally assaulted by two policemen near the high court. Telangana: 7-year-old killed after water tanker rams into two-wheeler

A 7-year-old girl was killed on Friday after a collision between a water tanker and a two-wheeler near Abids, the police said. K Laxmaih, Sub-Inspector at Abids police station, said, "The deceased girl Dia Jain was a third standard student at Rosary Convent School. Her father Naresh Jain was on the way to drop her to school in the morning."Laxmaih further said the girl died on the spot while her father was admitted to a local hospital for treatment. HC seeks authorities' reply on guidelines in sexual assault cases relating to foreign victims

The Delhi High Court has observed there is a lack of guidelines by which the court can seek intervention of the Home Ministry or the embassy concerned in sexual assault cases where victims or witnesses are foreign nationals. HC issues notices to Cong, BSP, Sena for putting up illegal hoardings, banners

The Bombay High Court Friday issued show cause notices to the Congress, the BSP and the Shiv Sena, asking why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against them for putting up illegal hoardings and banners across Maharashtra. A division bench, headed by Justice A S Oka, said it was of the prima facie opinion that these political parties had committed a breach of previous court orders that prohibited display of hoarding or banner without requisite permission. "There is material to show that these political parties have indulged in display of illegal hoardings, banners and so on.
