Man held for possession of 2 kg poppy

A man was arrested in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district on Friday and 2 kg of poppy was seized from him, officials said. Based on a specific input, a police team nabbed one Rattan Pal Singh in Choki Handan village of Nowshera tehsil, they said. During a search, officials recovered nearly 2 kg of poppy from him, they said. A case was registered and investigation is on, officials said.

Unidentified woman found murdered in Palghar district

Palghar district rural police Friday found the body of an unidentified woman in Nalasopara area. It was suspected that the woman, around 40-45 years old, was killed, though autopsy report was awaited, a police official said. Deputy Superintendent of Police Datta Totewad said the body was found in an open plot behind a building. Tulinj police have registered a case of murder.

Customs official held for 'aiding' gold-smuggling

: A customs official was arrested Friday at the Cochin international airport for allegedly aiding smuggling of gold worth over Rs one crore, DRI sources said here. Sunil Francis, who is in the cadre of havildar inthe customs department, was allegedly handed over three gold bars weighing one kg each by a passenger upon his arrival here from a Gulf country this morning, the sources said. Francis was arrested while trying to flee through the exit gate of the airport, they said, adding that the passenger, the alleged carrier, has also been held. The accused customs official was earlier put under the scanner of the DRI after he was found around the airport on his day-off, customs commissioner Sumit Kumar said. An enquiry against Francis has begun and he may be suspended, he added.

Indian woman acquitted of maid abuse in Singapore

An Indian woman in Singapore has been acquitted of maid abuse after the judge felt that the domestic help was "prone to exaggeration" in her complaints against her employer, a media report said Friday. District Judge Kenneth Yap, who delivered the judgement after a nine-day trial, said that Rajinder Kaur, 28, had "demonstrated a lack of intention to work in Singapore from the start", The New Paper reported. Her former employer Madam Singh Manu, 43, was accused of assaulting Kaur on four occasions in January, 2017 in an apartment in the western part of Singapore. The purported acts included hitting the maid twice, hitting her hand with a knife, pulling her hair and twisting her arm. Deputy Public Prosecutors Yang Ziliang and Sheryl Yeo had stated that Kaur was a truthful witness who had no reason to fabricate the acts of assault. Sitting Judge of Delhi HC Justice Valmiki J Mehta passes away

Justice Valmiki J Mehta, a sitting judge of the Delhi High Court, passed away in the early hours of Friday following a cardiac arrest.Mehta, who was 59 years old, is survived by his wife and two sons.He had assumed office as an Additional Judge of the high court on April 15, 2009.Expressing condolences, the Bar Council of Delhi said, "The news of sudden demise of Justice Valmiki J. ED searches premises of Chanda Kochhar, Venugopal Dhoot

The Enforcement Directorate is conducting searches at the premises of former ICICI Bank Managing Director Chanda Kochhar and Venugopal Dhoot of Videocon Group in Mumbai and Aurangabad respectively in connection with a money laundering case, an official said on Friday.The development comes weeks after the ED registered a criminal case against them for alleged money laundering. The case was registered under the Prevention of Money Laundering (PMLA) Act.On February 22, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had issued lookout circulars (LOCs) against Kochhar, her husband Deepak Kochhar and Videocon Group's Managing Director Dhoot."The LOCs were issued after the FIR was filed in the case. Delhi: FIR against Taxi union leader for thrashing traffic constable

Delhi Police on Wednesday, registered an FIR against three people including Taxi Union leader Arun Soni for allegedly thrashing Satish Kumar, a traffic constable.The FIR was registered at Kamla Market police station in Central Delhi under Section 154 of the CrPC and Section 321, 341 of the IPC.A team led by Sub-Inspector Dinesh Kumar is investigating the case.The incident took place on February 27 when Satish Kumar was returning home in a DTC bus. SC dismisses plea challenging Dalbir Suhag's appointment as head of Army's Eastern Command

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a petition challenging the appointment of Lieutenant General (Retd.) Dalbir Singh Suhag as the head of the Army's Eastern Command in 2012.The plea, filed by retired Lieutenant General Ravi Dastane, was dismissed by a top court bench headed by Justice D Y Chandrachud.Suhag, who was appointed as the head of the Eastern Command in 2012, rose to become the country's Army Chief in July 2014. He retired in December 2016.

Property dealer shot dead at wedding function

A property dealer was allegedly shot dead at a wedding function by two unidentified persons in a village here, police said Friday. Man, 3-yr-old son killed in road accident

An over speeding SUV overturned after hitting a divider in Safdarganj area here, killing a man and his three-year-old son, police said Friday. The incident occurred on Thursday night when Manvendra Singh (35), along with his wife Tripti (32), son Darsh (3) and daughter Harshita (7), was on his way to Lucknow, they said. They were rushed to a hospital where Manvendra and Darsh died, the police said. Manvendra's wife and daughter were injured, they said.

Man shot at, injured in Odisha village

A 35-year-old man was seriously injured as two motorcycle-borne miscreants fired at him from close range in Kendrapara district, police said Friday. The incident happened at Sana Nainipur village on Thursday night when the victim was outside his house, they said. The injured man identified as Prasant Barik received bullet wounds on his right thigh. He was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for treatment. The exact motive of the crime is yet to be ascertained, they said, adding that a special squad is on the job to trace the culprits.

The Supreme Court Friday dismissed the plea of a retired Army officer challenging the appointment of Dalbir Singh Suhag as head of the Eastern Command in 2012. Suhag had later succeeded General Bikram Singh as Army chief on July 31, 2014. Gen. Suhag retired on December 31, 2016. L&T says audit panel to seek external expert's help on alleged Cognizant bribery case

Larsen and Toubro Ltd (L&T) has said its audit committee will seek assistance of an external expert to look into the bribery allegations related to American IT firm Cognizant's campus in India. Last month, Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp (CTS) had said it would pay USD 25 million to the US Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) to settle its India bribery charges. It was alleged in a US Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) complaint that in 2014, a senior Tamil Nadu official demanded a USD 2 million bribe from the construction firm responsible for building Cognizant's 2.7 million sq ft campus in Chennai. As alleged in the complaint, Cognizant's former President Gordon Coburn and ex-Chief Legal Officer Steven E Schwartz had authorised the contractor to pay the bribe and directed their subordinates to conceal the bribe by doctoring the contractor's change orders. A former naxal was shot dead by unidentified persons in Jharkhand's Seraikela-Kharswan district, police said Friday. Ramvilas Lohra was shot dead by unidentified persons at Khunti village of the district on Thursday. He was rushed to Tata Main Hospital but he succumbed to his injuries, said Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Chandil), D N Banka said. The SDPO said police investigation was on. Maha man gets life imprisonment for murder

A court in Thane in Maharashtra Thursday convicted a 50-year-old man for murder and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Swamidayal Jaikaran Varma was also fined Rs 2,000 by Thane District Judge SP Gondhalekar. Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) Ujwalla Moholkar said Varma had a quarrel with fellow Kalwa resident Krupa Ramsagar Pathak (24) over a trivial issue. On May 26, he hit Pathak with an iron rod and killed him while the victim was asleep near Kalika Mata Mandir in Kalwa township, the APP said. Varma confessed to his employer about the incident and then tried to flee to Uttar Pradesh but was nabbed by police, the APP said.
