The mortal remains of an Indian Air Force officer, who was killed in a helicopter crash in Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam district, reached late Thursday evening in Agra, police said. The cremation of Pankaj Nauhar will take place on Friday as the body reached late in the night, said Superintendent of Police (City) Rajesh Kumar Singh. His body was brought from Agra and kept in a military hospital today late evening, Singh said. The body will be taken to his native Jarelia village in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura district on Wednesday morning for cremation, the officer added.

In a major drug haul, the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) Thursday seized 87.38 kg of opium by arresting two persons in the district. One of the accused is a panchayat secretary, a senior official said. Acting on a tip-off, bureau sleuths raided a hide-out in Daulatpura village and arrested Bharat Lal Dhakad and Kamal Dhakad and seized 87.38 kg of opium and 42.40 kg of opium-mixed water, CNB deputy commissioner Pramod Singh said. Bharat Lal is village panchayat secretary. A case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered against the duo, Singh said.
The Madras High Court on Thursday refused to grant any immediate interim relief on a prayer by a Tamil Nadu minister seeking to restrain an NGO from levelling corruption charges against him in the media and on social media. In his suit, Municipal Administration Minister S P Velumani sought damages of Rs 1 crore against the non-governmental organisation, Arappor Iyakkam, for dissemination of alleged defamatory content against him, permanent injunction and the relief of an interim injunction against the NGO. The injunctions were to restrain the organisation from publishing in any manner further "defamatory" articles, photographs, statements or caricatures insinuating him to allegations of corruption. A 30-year-old government employee, who allegedly impregnated a minor girl, was arrested in Andhra Pradesh's Krishna district on Thursday, police said. The incident came to light on Thursday when doctors at Machilipatnam government hospital confirmed the pregnancy during a preliminary medical examination, a police officer said. The Madras High Court Thursday observed that the standard of investigation by police has drastically come down, citing the number of acquittals in serious offences. Justice Anand Venkatesh made the observation while granting bail to an accused who suffered incarceration for more than 264 days, pointing out that during the trial before a lower court, the de facto complainant was unable to identify the accused. "Even in this case, the respondent police has not taken any steps to conduct an identification parade and therefore, the whole exercise of conducting the trial has now become pointless. Justice Mridula Bhatkar dismissed the appeal filed by Ramchandra Yadav, sentenced by a trial court to seven years in prison under IPC section 377 (unnatural sex). The high court said it cannot take a lenient view of the offence. "It is an offence of unnatural sexual intercourse with a person having mild mental retardation with less IQ who in fact requires to be given more protection by the society," Justice Bhatkar said. A youth working in a catering firm was sentenced to life and fined Rs 1,000 by a court here on Thursday, for killing his colleague in a monetary dispute 14 months ago. The judge of the First Additional District Court M Gunasekharan delivered the verdict. According to the prosecution, Praveen Kumar and Mohan had a tiff over a sum of Rs 300 on November 24, 2017.
