3 Afghan men arrested at Delhi airport for trying to smuggle in gold

Three Afghan men have been arrested by the customs officials at Delhi airport for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold valuing about Rs 54 lakh, according to an official statement on Friday. The accused were intercepted after their arrival from Dubai on Wednesday. A detailed personal and baggage search resulted in the recovery of 13 gold biscuits and a gold bar which in total weighed 1.6 kg, the customs department said. The gold, worth Rs 54.49 lakh, has been seized and the trio were arrested, it said.

Punjab cop, who was kidnapped by terrorists before Pathankot attack, jailed in rape case

Former Gurdaspur Superintendent of Police Salwinder Singh, who was kidnapped by terrorists hours before the Pathankot attack, has been sentenced to 10 years jail in a rape case by a court here. The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Prem Kumar also gave him a five years sentence in a corruption case and said both the sentences will run concurrently. Singh was investigating a different rape case against the husband of the rape survivor and as an investigating officer often used to visit her house. He raped the woman on the pretext of exonerating her husband, according to the prosecution. The woman had also alleged that Singh demanded Rs 50,000 to hush up the proceedings against her husband. Police traced mobile phone calls of Singh and concluded that he was regularly in touch with the woman, the prosecution said. Singh went missing for months and was suspended from service. ED files supplementary charge sheet against ex-HP CM Virbhadra Singh in DA case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday filed a supplementary charge sheet against former Himachal Pradesh chief minister Virbhadra Singh in a money laundering case. Special judge Arun Bhardwaj said he would hear the matter on March 18. ED's supplementary charge sheet was filed through advocates special public prosecutors Nitesh Rana and N K Matta. In a separate case filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the matter, Singh and his wife were chargesheeted along with others. The CBI had claimed that Singh had amassed assets worth around Rs 10 crore which were disproportionate to his total income during his tenure as a Union minister under the UPA government. The ED had filed a case on the basis of the CBI case.

Security of Pakistani prisoners in Raj jails stepped up, prison officials removed

The Rajasthan government has removed the Jaipur Jail Superintendent and the deputy jailor following the killing of a Pakistani prisoner by fellow inmates even as security of Pakistani prisoners lodged in various jails of the state has been enhanced following the incident. At present, there are 16 Pakistani prisoners, five each in Jaipur and Bikaner, two in Jodhpur, three in Sriganganagar and one in Kota Jail. Pakistani prisoners remain in separate barracks and security arrangements have been enhanced further, NRK Reddy, Director General- Jail, said. The 50-year-old Pakistani prisoner Shakrullah was killed on Wednesday in the TV room of the jail after a brawl with other inmates over the choice of channel to watch. PMLA case: Robert Vadra appears before ED for 5th time in Delhi

Robert Vadra, brother-in-law of Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Friday appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for the fifth time in connection with a money-laundering case related to purchase of alleged illegal assets abroad, officials said. Vadra reached the agency's office at Jamnagar House in central Delhi shortly before 11 am, they said. He has been grilled in this case four times in the past, the last being February 20. Officials said the agency is confronting Vadra with documents and statements of other accused being investigated in the case and his statement is being recorded section 50 (powers of authorities regarding summons, production of documents and to give evidence) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Vivek Doval defamation plea: Court reserves order on whether to summon Jairam Ramesh, Caravan

A Delhi court Friday reserved its order on whether to summon Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, The Caravan magazine and its reporter as accused in a defamation plea filed by NSA Ajit Doval's son Vivek against the magazine. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal said it will pass the order on March 2 on whether to summon them as accused in the plea. Vivek, in his complaint, had said the magazine and Ramesh had attempted to "deliberately malign and defame" him to "settle scores with his father". The Caravan had alleged that Vivek Doval, "runs a hedge fund in the Cayman Islands" which is "an established tax haven". Maha: 3 sentenced to life in prison for gang-raping teen

Three persons have been sentenced to life in prison by a court in Thane in Maharashtra for gang-raping a newly-wed teen. District Judge S A Sinha, in a recent order, convicted Naveen Ashok Bagade (43), Santosh Yashwant Shelke (22) and Rajkumar Tikeshwar Sahani (29) under section 376 D (rape by one or more persons constituting a group) and 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code. The three, all residents of Mithpada in the powerloom town of Bhiwandi in the district, were also fined Rs 15,000 while four others were acquitted in the case. Additional Public Prosecutor Vandana Jadhav said the incident happened on August 17, 2014 at the teen's marital home in Bhiwandi. Two youths hacked to death

Two youths were hacked to death by a group of assailants near Gayatri Puram crossing here, police said Friday. Shivam (20) and Shiv (22) were killed Thursday night when they were returning from a marriage function, they said. Four persons have been detained in this connection and a probe is on in the matter. BJP MLAs protest delay in prosecution sanction in JNU sedition case, marshalled out of Assembly

Three BJP MLAs were marshalled out of the Delhi Assembly on the first day of the Budget session on Friday for interrupting Lt Governor Anil Baijal's address with their protests over the AAP government's "delay" in sanctioning prosecution in the JNU sedition case. Speaker Ram Niwas Goel tried to reason with the legislators, saying the LG's address is not a part of proceedings of the House, but they did not relent. The three MLAs -- Leader of the House Vijender Gupta, O P Sharma and Jagdish Pradhan -- went to the well of the House after which Goel ordered them to be marshalled out. Gupta charged the government with "delaying" the sanction for prosecution of accused in JNU sedition case. NCB seizes over 1,000 kg cannabis, truck driver held

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Hyderabad Sub-Zone intercepted a truck near Bilal Idgah crossing in Rajendernagar in Ranga Reddy district and seized 1,020 kg of cannabis.The incident took place on February 20. A 39-year-old truck driver has been arrested by the NCB officials.The source of the cannabis drug originated from Visakhapatnam and the truck was destined to Zaheerabad for further trafficking.Further investigation in the matter is underway.

Hyderabad: Toddler dies after being run over by auto-trolley

Six-yr-old girl killed after panchayat ghar's ceiling collapses in UP

A six-year-old girl was killed and a boy injured after a portion of a panchayat ghar's ceiling collapsed during a wedding ceremony in Mehmoodpur village here, police said Friday. The deceased, Sunena, died on the spot and the boy, Vikram (9), was admitted to a hospital on Thursday, they said. The boy's condition has been stated as serious. 2 held with smuggled liquor in UP

Police have seized 550 cartons of liquor which were being allegedly smuggled from Haryana to Uttar Pradesh and arrested two persons, an official said Friday. The liquor, worth lakhs of rupees, was seized at Miranpur town here on Thursday, Station House Officer (SHO) Pankej Tyagi said. He said a police team intercepted a truck carrying the 550 cartons of liquor and arrested two people. During interrogation of the arrested persons, it was learnt that the liquor was meant for distribution ahead of the general elections and was being smuggled to Moradabad and Rampur in Uttar Pradesh from Haryana, the SHO said. The matter is being investigated, he said.

Man found dead in UP's Shamli district

A 23-year-old man, who was missing for the past four days, was found dead at Hathi Karonda village in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district, police said Friday. The deceased, Deepak, went missing on February 18 and his body was found in the village on Thursday evening, Station House Officer (SHO) Kapil Gotem said. Police have registered a case against four people, including a woman, and a search was launched to nab the suspects, he said. The man's mother had a filed a missing persons report at the Babri police station after Deepak did not return home on February 18 evening, the officer said.

Telangana man shot dead in Florida, family seeks help to bring back mortal remains

A man from Telangana was allegedly shot dead in Florida in the United States by unidentified gunmen, late on Tuesday night (local time).45-year-old Kotha Goverdhan Reddy had moved to Florida seven years ago and worked there as a manager at a store, according to Madhusudan Reddy, the brother of the victim.A native of Yadadri Bhongir district, Goverdhan is survived by his wife and two children.
