Pakistan on Tuesday urged the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to dismiss India's plea in the Kulbhushan Jadhav case, as it accused New Delhi of using the top UN court for "political theatre". Jadhav, a retired Indian Navy officer, was sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court on charges of "espionage and terrorism" after a closed trial in April 2017. A Turkish appeals court on Tuesday upheld jail sentences against opposition journalists in a long-running case targeting the Cumhuriyet newspaper -- one of the few remaining dailies to oppose President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Last year 14 former Cumhuriyet staff including journalists and executives were given multiple sentences for "aiding and abetting terror groups without being a member" but they remained free pending trial. An appeals court in Istanbul said it unanimously approved the sentences, and the Cumhuriyet reported that six former staff including cartoonist Musa Kart would have to go back to prison. A special court in Champai district on Mizoram-Myanmar border sentenced a 40-year-old woman to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment for possessing heroin, officials said Tuesday. Lalthansangi was convicted under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act for carrying 555 grams of heroin on February 9, 2017, they said. The judge, R Vanlalena, also slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 on the accused. The woman, who hails from Zokhawthar village of Champhai along Indo-Myanmar border, had packed the contraband in 42 soap cases and concealed them in a motorcycle which was used for trafficking, officials said. Her nephew, who was driving the bike, was also arrested near Melbuk village in Champhai district, they said. He was released from jail after about two years due to lack of evidence, the officials said.
The Supreme Court Tuesday decided not to pass any order directing personal presence of West Bengal chief secretary, DGP and former Kolkata police commissioner before it in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam in which they have been issued a contempt notice. "We are not passing any order. We will take up this matter tomorrow," said a bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices L N Rao and Sanjiv Khanna. According to the February 5 order, the matter was listed on whether Chief Secretary Malay Kumar De, DGP Virendra Kumar and Rajeev Kumar, former Kolkata Police Commissioner would be ordered to appear personally before the court on February 20 after the perusal of their affidavits filed yesterday. Unable to cope with the loss of their only son, an elderly couple allegedly comitted suicide by setting themselves ablaze at home in the early hours of Tuesday, police here said. The 61-year-old man and his wife, 55, were living with their son, whose wife had deserted him, and grandson at Velliyankadu near Kangeyam in Tirupur district Their son died due to illness six months ago and from then on, the couple appeared to be dejected, police said. The couple allegedly doused kerosene and set themselves afire around 6 AM, police said. Hearing their screams, the grandson tried to rescue them but the couple pushed him away, they said. Some neighbours managed to extinguish the fire. However, both died at the spot, while the grandson is being treated for minor burns, police said.

In a relief to former IPS officer Bharati Ghosh, who recently joined BJP in West Bengal, the Supreme Court Tuesday granted her protection from arrest in all the cases registered against her. In a major shuffle in the IPS cadres, the state government has appointed Additional Director General (ADG) of West Bengal Police (law and order) Anuj Sharma as the new Kolkata Police Commissioner, replacing Rajeev Kumar, a government notification said on Tuesday. Kumar, who had completed three years in office as the Kolkata police chief, was posted as the ADG of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), it added. A court at Khambhaliya in Dwarka district of Gujarat on Tuesday awarded life sentence to seven members of a family, including two women, for the 'honour killing' of a married couple in 2014. Additional sessions Judge A M Sheikh sentenced the seven - the victim woman Puriben Chauhan's parents Jesabhai Chauhan and Kantaben, and her relatives Babubhai Chauhan, Manoj Chauhan, Devabhai Chauhan, Vanraj Chauhan and Pujiben Chauhan - to imprisonment for the rest of their lives. The victim had married Govindbhai Chauhan in 2010 against the wishes of her parents. Four years after their marriage, the woman's parents and other relatives attacked the couple with sharp weapons while they were working in a field at Jamgadhka village. Govindbhai Chauhan died on the spot while his wife Puriben Chauhan was seriously injured and died later at a hospital in Jamnagar. A 22-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raising anti-India slogans on old Purulia road here in East Singhbhum district, a police officer said Tuesday. The incident happened under the jurisdiction of Azadnagar police station on Sunday, the police officer said, adding, the accused, identified as Anas Razi, is a resident of Zakirnagar. Razi along with half a dozen of his friends, were raising anti-India slogans such as and "Pakistan Jindabad" on Sunday evening, the Officer-in-Charge of Azadnagar police station, Vishnu Prasad Rawat, said. On being informed about the incident, a mobile tiger police team on bikes rushed to the spot and arrested Razi. His friends, however, managed to escape. Turkish police on Tuesday launched raids to detain over 300 people, including military personnel, suspected of ties to a group blamed for a 2016 coup bid, state media reported. Prosecutors in Turkey's three biggest provinces -- Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir -- issued arrest warrants for 324 people as part of different probes into followers of US-based Muslim preacher Fethullah Gulen, the private DHA and the Anadolu state news agency said. A Saudi man has been arrested by customs officials at the Delhi airport for allegedly trying to smuggle into India gold worth about Rs 53 lakh, according to an official statement issued Tuesday. The accused was intercepted after his arrival from Dammam in Saudi Arabia on Sunday. A detailed personal and baggage search of the passenger resulted in the recovery of 15 gold bars, weighing a total of 1.6 kg, the customs department said in the statement. "The gold biscuits were concealed in a plastic wrapper which was tied to his waist," it said. The gold, assessed to be worth Rs 53.7 lakh has been seized, and the Saudi national was arrested, the statement said.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday said that it will not examine whether wearing a turban is an essential part of Sikh religion or not, adding that the issue should be heard by a civil court.A bench headed by Justice SA Bobde, said: "We are not going to the larger issue of Sikhs should wear the turban or not," adding that the issue has to be adjudicated by a civil court after examining the evidence.The court also wanted to know whether it is mandatory to wear a turban in Sikh religion.In July last year, the top court had issued a notice to the Union of India and cycling federation on a plea filed by a Sikh cyclist, Jagdeep Singh Puri, who was denied participation from contesting in a long-distance cycling competition.Puri had moved the top court after he was allegedly denied participation in the cycle race as he wears a turban.
Three persons, including a former councillor of Kendrapara urban local body were arrested on the charge of committing highway robbery, police said Tuesday. Former councillor Rashmi Ranjan Das along with two other accomplices had allegedly snatched Rs 10,500 cash and a gold ring a week ago from a person near Duhuria junction on the Paradip-Daitary expressway, they said. After receiving a complaint, police swung into action and arrested the three accused persons on Monday, said Inspector In-Charge of Sadar police station, K Rout. The cash and the stolen ring was recovered from them, he said, adding they were produced before a court on Tuesday and remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.
The Delhi Police has arrested Shardendu Goel, the license holder of Hotel Arpit Palace where a massive fire killed 17 people last week, officials said Tuesday. Goel is being produced at the Tis Hazari court and police will seek his remand, Rajesh Deo, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), said. His brother Rakesh Goel, the owner of Hotel Arpit Palace, was arrested from Delhi airport on Saturday when he landed from Qatar. This is the fourth arrest in the case. Earlier, the hotel's general manager and receptionist were arrested in connection with the incident. A look out circular (LOC) was issued against Rakesh and Shardendu.
