A Mexican journalist who was kidnapped at gunpoint as he took his daughter to school has been freed, authorities in the violent eastern state of Veracruz said Thursday. Marcos Miranda, who had received threats over his work as editor and crime reporter with the news portal Noticias a Tiempo, was abducted Wednesday morning by two armed men in the town of Boca del Rio, Veracruz. State Governor Cuitlahuac Garcia tweeted early Thursday that "minutes ago, we managed to free the journalist Marcos Miranda." He did not give further details. A military source speaking on condition of anonymity told AFP Miranda had been found walking down the street, beaten and disoriented. The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Thursday registered an offence against a senior police inspector for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from a history-sheeter for not taking action against him under a stringent law. Shirish Murlidhar Gaikwad, posted at J J Marg police station in south Mumbai, was suspended subsequently, a senior police officer said. He was accused of demanding Rs 2 lakh from Imran 'Kutta' alias Imran Kalia for not taking action against him under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Slumlords, Bootleggers, Drug Offenders and Dangerous Persons Act (MPDA). Imran allegedly paid him the money but also informed the ACB's Mumbai unit. Gaikwad allegedly admitted that he had accepted the bribe, following which an offence was registered against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
In another gun fight, Delhi police in the intervening night of Wednesday-Thursday arrested an accused involved in various cases of robbery and snatching. To evade the arrest, the accused identified as Srikant alias Appu, had fired several bullets at two policemen who had asked him to surrender, the police said.
Two unidentified men shot at Vishal Khandelwal, BJP member of the Dehu Cantonment Board, here late Thursday evening, police said. The bullets did not hit Khandelwal but he suffered minor injuries while trying to save himself, police said. The attackers managed to escape. The Tamil Nadu police on Thursday informed the Madras High Court that it would not arrest film director Pa Ranjith against whom a case has been registered in connection with his reported "derogatory" remarks against a 10th century Chola emperor. When the anticipatory bail plea of Ranjith came up before Justice P Rajamanickam, the government prosecutor informed that police would not arrest him. A Nigerian national was arrested for allegedly duping dozens of people in a fraudulent scheme which involved the export of an oil to Ghana used to manufacture "herbal vaccine" for racehorses, police said Thursday. Gilbert Okoye Pedro (39) was nabbed by the Cyber Prevention, Awareness and Detection Centre (CyPAD), the Delhi Police's cyber crime cell. With the arrest of three people, the Crime Branch of Delhi Police has busted a gang allegedly involved in drug trafficking and seized 500 kg of marijuana worth Rs 1 crore from their possession, an official said Thursday. Those arrested were identified as Aslam Khan (24), Mousam (21), both residents of Haryana's Nuh district, and Jekam Khan, a resident of Rajasthan's Alwar, he said. Based on a tip-off, the three accused were arrested on June 11 near Metcalf House Bus Stand in Delhi, he said. "During interrogation, the accused persons disclosed that that they had brought the contraband from Rayagada district in Odisha. Aslam had been involved in this illegal transportation of marijuana for the last six months with Jekam Khan," Additional Commissioner Ajit Kumar Singla said in a statement. On Tuesday, Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev said he had requested Putin dismiss the officers after lifting the charges against Golunov on the basis of a lack of evidence. A 13-year-old girl was raped by two men on June 7 at her home in a village here, police said Thursday. SHO of Khutar Police Station Sanjay Singh said the minor was raped when her parents had gone out to purchase medicines. When the parents returned home, the accused fled the scene flashing a countrymade pistol and sword, officials said. The accused have been identified as Vikram and Nikku and cases have been registered against them, they said. The girl has been sent for medical examination and efforts are on to nab the accused, police said.

The CBI on Thursday filed a charge sheet in the Rouse Avenue special court here against absconding self-styled godman Virendra Dev Dixit for allegedly raping a minor at his ashrams in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi in 1999.As per a CBI official, the investigation agency, in its charge sheet, has pressed stringent charges of rape and criminal intimidation on Dixit, who is absconding.The central probe agency has also announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh on him, the officials said.The CBI has alleged that Dixit, being the head and spiritual leader of Adhyatmik Vishwa Vidyalaya, now changed to Adhyatmik Vidyalaya, was in a position to control and dominate the complainant--a minor girl at that time. He raped her repeatedly in May-June 1999 at his ashrams in Uttar Pradesh's Kampil and Delhi's Vijay Vihar, it said.Dixit had allegedly threatened the survivor to "cause injury to her reputation" and also issued "life threats" to her family, the agency alleged.
The Madras High Court Thursday ordered a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to a sub-inspector for being illegally detained and humiliated by his superior. A division bench of the court's Madurai bench, comprising justices S S Sundar and C Saravanan, issued the order based on SI V Kumaravel's plea that he was in uniform when he was illegally detained for 30 minutes on August 1, 2000. Moreover, the DIG report revealed that a criminal case registered against Kumaravel was motivated, and was done at the instance of police officer John Rose, he submitted. The judge said the illegal detention of an SI in uniform was definitely an act of humiliation.
