A 22-year-old man, wanted in at least 18 cases including those of murder and robbery in Uttar Pradesh (UP), was arrested in suburban Andheri here, police said Thursday. Sakinaka police in Andheri Wednesday arrested Atique Mohammed, a resident of Pratapgarh in UP who was carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head, an official said. He was allegedly a member of the 'Touqir gang' and had four cases of murder, seven cases of robbery and four extortion cases among others registered against him. To evade arrest, he was living in Mumbai under a fictitious name, Afroz Shaikh, for the last few months, the police official said. After Sakinaka police information about him, his antecedents were probed and he was arrested by laying a trap. He was handed over to the Uttar Pradesh police, the official added.
Additional Director of CBI M Nageshwar Rao on Thursday held a series of meetings with senior officials of the central probe agency in the city, sources said. Rao visited the CBI office at CGO complex at Salt Lake and discussed various ongoing cases, after which he went to the anti-corruption branch office of CBI at Nizam Palace, the sources said. According to sources, Rao is scheduled to meet the officials of Economic Offences (IV) wing of CBI on Friday at the Salt Lake office which is dealing with the multi-crore ponzi scam cases like Saradha and Rose Valley. The central probe agency was gearing up to expedite the cases relating to the ponzi scams and bring them to their logical conclusions, sources said. The CBI had also interrogated former Kolkata Police Commissioner and now ADG-CID Rajeev Kumar under the directions of Calcutta High Court in connection with the Saradha scam case.
Seven persons including three Nigerians have been arrested by city police for hacking into over 2,000 bank accounts and transferring crores of rupees after creating a fake webpage of the Income Tax Department. The accused lured victims across the country by promising income tax (IT) refunds, and for the first time arrests have been made in these cases, the local cyber crime cell claimed. The accused were arrested from Mumbai Wednesday and brought here, said assistant commissioner of police (cyber crime) J M Yadav. The accused allegedly targeted 4,727 people across India, of which over 2,500 were duped of crores of rupees. There were at least 57 unsolved cases of such frauds in the country, Yadav added. Ahmedabad police started a probe after Tejas Shah, a city-based doctor, filed a complaint that over Rs 2 lakh were transferred from his account on June 22 last year. Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) MLA Pradip Yadav was questioned by the police here on Thursday in connection with a sexual harassment case filed by a woman leader of the party, a police officer said. Deoghar, Sub-divisional Police Officer, Vikas Chandra Srivastav said that Yadav recorded his statement before him and Cyber station Inspector Sangita Kumari in connection with the case. The JVM woman leader had in April filed an FIR with the women's police station accusing Yadav of sexual harassment in Deoghar during Lok Sabha elections. Yadav contested the Godda seat and Deoghar is an Assembly segment of the Lok Sabha constituency. The Deoghar police are investigating the matter and called Yadav for questioning. Yadav has filed an anticipatory bail petition in the Deoghar court. The petition is likely to come up for hearing on June 17. Yadav has already resigned from the post of party's principal general secretary on the instruction of party chief Babulal Marandi.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Thursday registered an offence against a senior police inspector for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from a history-sheeter for not booking him under a stringent law. Shirish Murlidhar Gaikwad, posted at the J J Marg police station in South Mumbai, had demanded Rs 2 lakh as a bribe from Imran 'Kutta' alias Imran 'Kalia', a dreaded criminal in the area, an official said. Gaikwad had demanded the bribe for not initiating action against Imran under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Slumlords, Bootleggers, Drug Offenders and Dangerous Persons Act (MPDA), he said. Imran paid the bribe amount to the police inspector but at the same time informed the ACB's Mumbai unit about it, the official said. During verification Gaikwad admitted that he had accepted the bribe following which an offence was registered against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act, he added.

Two persons wanted in a case of attempt to murder in Rajasthan were caught at Valiv in Palghar district of Maharashtra, an official said Thursday. The duo, Satpal Chowdhari (30) and Raju Lalchand Chowdhari (28), who had been on the run for about a month, were nabbed on Wednesday afternoon, the official said. A case had been registered against them at Rani police station in Pali district of Rajasthan, senior inspector of Valiv police station, Vilas Chowgule, said. "As per the case history, the duo had a dispute with Punaram Chowdhari (32) over a WhatsApp group. On May 15, they waylaid the victim, who was riding his bike, and thrashed him severely. "Later, they also took out two bottles filled with petrol from their car. However, Punaram managed to escape from the spot," the official said. The CBI has filed a charge sheet against absconding self-styled 'godman' Virendra Dev Dixit for allegedly raping a minor at his ashrams in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi in 1999, officials said. In its charge sheet filed in the Rouse Avenue special court here, the CBI has pressed stringent charges of rape and criminal intimidation on Dixit, who is absconding. The central probe agency has announced a reward of Rs five lakh on him, the officials said. The agency had registered the case on January 3, 2018 on the orders of the Delhi High Court. Tightening its noose around gold smugglers in Kerala, Customs Thursday seized yellow metal weighing over 2 kg in two separate incidents and one person arrested. In the first incident, 1.2 kg gold was seized from a person who arrived from Dubai via Tiruchirapalli airport in neighbouring Tamil Nadu. "Based on the intelligence inputs, the gold compound weighing 1.2 kg was seized by Customs(Preventive) Unit, Palakkad. The suspected career arrived from Dubai via Trichy Airport Terminal," Customs Commissioner Sumit Kumar said. He said the gold seized was concealed in a packet and four condoms. The officer, however, refused to reveal his name as it would affect the ongoing investigation. Customs sources said the passenger was part of a gang involved in gold smuggling. Two brothers were killed Thursday after a truck hit their motorcycle in Rajasthan's Kota city, police said. The incident took place near Geberiya Bawadi when the truck was taking a turn for Kota-Jhalawar highway, they said. Ajay Bawari (18) died on the spot while his brother, Karan Bawari (25), succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at the Kota New Medical Hospital. They were residents of Balta Road, said Narendra Pareek, Station House Officer of Anantpura Police Station. The driver of the truck fled from the spot after the incident but his vehicle has been seized, he said. The bodies were handed over to the family after postmortem, the officer said. The Supreme Court agreed Thursday to hear tomorrow a plea of medical aspirants, who claimed that the answer key of five questions asked in NEET(UG)-2019 exam was wrong and the paper needs to be quashed. A vacation bench of Justices Indira Banerjee and Ajay Rastogi agreed to hear the plea filed by four students who appeared for the exam. The petition filed by four Hyderabad-based students -- Kayathi Mohan Reddy and three others through advocate Mahfooz Nazki, said that National Testing Agency (NTA) which conducted the exam issued wrong answer keys and therefore jeopardised the career prospects of the aspirants who sat for the exam. The exam was conducted on May 5 and the official answer key was issued on May 29 to the questions asked in the examination. "Upon perusal of the key, the petitioners were shocked to note that answers to a number of questions were demonstrably wrong," the plea said.
