No pre-arrest bail for Raman Singh's son-in-law in bypoll case

A court in Chhattisgarh's Raipur district Thursday rejected the anticipatory bail pleas of former chief minister Raman Singh's son-in-law Dr Puneet Gupta and BJP leader Maturam Pawar in a case related to the alleged fixing of the 2014 Antagarh bypoll. Gupta and Pawar had filed pre-arrest bail applications after the Raipur police lodged a case against them on February 3 based on a complaint by Congress leader Kiranmayee Nayak, their lawyer Hitendra Tiwari told PTI. The bail pleas were rejected by Additional District and Session Judge Vivek Kumar Verma, he added. Tiwari and another lawyer, Kamlesh Pandey, who appeared for Gupta and Pawar, said they contended in the court that the FIR was lodged under pressure from the newly elected Congress government. Two members of Jitender Gogi gang held in Gurgaon

The Gurgaon Police has arrested two dreaded criminals who were wanted in murder, attempt to murder and other heinous cases here, a police officer said Thursday. "Following a tip off, Deepak Singh and Mohit, residents of Haryana's Sonepat, were arrested Wednesday night from Dwarka Expressway intersection on Gurgaon Pataudi road," Gurgaon police PRO Subhash Bokan said. "Both the accused persons are gang members of notorious Delhi-based gangster Jitender alias Gogi, Bokan added. Three country-made pistols, 11 live cartridges and an SUV were recovered from their possession, the police PRO said. He said he accused persons were planning to execute a crime in Gurgaon but were nabbed by a police team. Four cases of loot and murder have been solved with their arrest, the officer said. Cash agent shot, injured in Delhi's Mundka

A cash collection agent in his 30's was injured after being shot at allegedly by two men who fled the spot after robbing him of cash worth around Rs 70,000 in outer Delhi's Mundka, police said Thursday. The victim, identified as Brijpal Singh, works as a collection agent with a private firm. He used to stay in a godown of his office, they said. The incident took place on Wednesday evening when the victim was returning to Mundka on his bike after collecting cash from Samaypur Badli. When Singh reached Rani Kheda underpass, he was intercepted by two men who opened fire and fled with his bag that contained around Rs 70,000, a senior police officer said. Singh told police that out of the total robbed amount, Rs 50,000 belonged to the firm he works for while the rest was his own, he said. Nath orders flat allotment after rape victim's family is asked

After the Indore Development Authority (IDA) allegedly asked the family of a rape victim to vacate a flat given to them by the previous government, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath ordered that the house be alloted formally to the family. "We were given a 200 sq ft flat five months ago. On Wednesday, four or five IDA officials came and directed us to vacate it as it had not been formally allotted to us," the victim's father told PTI Thursday. An official source said that when Chief Minister Nath learnt about the issue, he directed officials to take appropriate steps to help the family. Following which, an estate official of IDA issued an order allotting the flat in the name of the victim's father, the source said. 25-year-old arrested for killing auto-rickshaw driver

A day after the killing of an auto-rickshaw driver in Shahdara's Krishna Nagar area, a 25-year-old man was arrested Thursday in connection with the case, police said. The accused was identified as Nikhil Chaudhary, a native of Bulandshahr and resident of Sagarpur, they said, adding that the weapon and the motorcycle used in the crime have been recovered. According to police, 28-year-old auto driver Rohit was shot dead on Tuesday night by two bike-borne men. The incident happened when Rohit was returning home. The killing was captured by a CCTV camera installed in the area, a senior police officer said. Two burnt to death as car catches fire in Mathura

Two persons were charred to death when the car they were travelling in caught fire near a village here in the early hours Thursday, police said. The incident took place near Ajnok village when the two were travelling from Barsana towards Chhata on the Barsana-Chata road, they said. Police said the deceased could not be identified and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem. The cause of fire was not immediately known, they said.

Drunken brawl: Man stabbed to death in front of wife by his friends in outer Delhi

A 34-year-old man was stabbed to death in front of his wife allegedly by his two friends during a drunken brawl between them over a petty issue in outer Delhi's Nangloi area in the early hours of Thursday, police said. The deceased was identified as Deepak, they said, adding the accused and the victim had previous criminal records. The officials of Nangloi police station were alerted at 3.28 am about the incident, a senior police officer said. In her complaint, the victim's wife told police that Deepak returned home from Haridwar after a trip on Wednesday night. Two of his friends visited him at his residence. They dinned and consumed liquor together and were having a conversation. The CBI will question Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar on February 9 in Shillong in connection with Saradha scam, officials said Thursday, in the backdrop of Sunday's dramatic raid on Kumar's residence by the agency that triggered a slugfest between the Centre and the state government. The agency has also called former Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Kunal Ghosh to Shillong on February 10. The CBI wants to question Kumar, a 1989-batch IPS officer, as he was heading the SIT formed by West Bengal government to probe Saradha and other ponzi scheme cases, they said. 5-year-old girl abducted, raped and murdered in central Mumbai

A five-year-old girl, abducted by an unidentified person, was found dead at Mahim in Central Mumbai Thursday morning, with the police stating that she was sexually assaulted. The girl was abducted around 3.00 am from L J Road in Mahim when she was asleep alongwith her family members in their roadside shanty, a police official said. Her father, a labourer, noticed that she was missing when he woke up, and lodged a police complaint. The girl was found dead in a deserted place on the same road around 10.00 am, the police official said. Autopsy at the state-run J J Hospital revealed that she had been raped. "We have registered an offence of rape with murder and also added sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act," said Vikram Deshmane, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone -V). Police have formed multiple teams to investigate the crime, he said.

Cal HC orders CBI probe into death of bizman's wife

The Calcutta High Court Thursday ordered a CBI probe into the "unnatural death" of a Raniganj-based businessman's wife, observing that there were differences between the post-mortem report and the state CID's conclusion on the reason behind her demise. Justice Debangsu Basak directed the state CID to hand over investigation in the case to the central agency. The victim, 39-year-old Pushpa Bhalotia, was found with burn injuries and was taken to a private hospital in Durgapur where she succumbed to her injuries on October 5, 2017. Her husband Manoj Bhalotia was then arrested in this connection. Prima facie it is a case of suicide, according to the CID. The port-mortem report had said she could have died of a bullet injury, apart from the burn injuries. A single bench of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha had on August 21 last year ordered a CBI probe into the case, but on an appeal by the woman's husband, the order was overturned by a division bench a week later. Abu Dhabi ISIS module: NIA files chargesheet against two accused

The NIA filed a fresh chargesheet against two accused on Thursday in connection with its probe in the Abu Dhabi ISIS module case, the agency said. The chargesheet was filed before a special court here against Mohammad Abdullah Basith and Mohammad Abdul Qhadeer, a National Investigation Agency (NIA) spokesperson said.
