A US federal judge has sentenced a Chinese student to a year in prison after he pleaded guilty to illegally taking pictures at a restricted US Navy base in Florida, the media reported on Thursday.

Muzammil appeared before the court from the Bulandshahr district jail through video conferencing, according to government lawyer Anjum Khan. He said Muzammil could not be brought to the court as he did not get security. The court will pronounce the quantum of punishment on Friday.

Indian American Narsan Lingala and his girlfriend Sandya Reddy have been charged with trying to hire a hitman to kill the former's estranged wife. Lingala, 55, who has been charged by criminal complaint with one count of murder-for-hire was produced before US Magistrate Judge Michael A. Hammer in Newark federal court and was held without bail. His ex-girlfriend, Reddy, 52, appeared in the court on the same charge and was also detained. According to the complaint, in May 2018, Lingala was in a holding cell at the Middlesex County Superior Courthouse as he awaited a court hearing. While there, he asked another inmate if he knew anyone who could kill his estranged wife. The inmate responded that he knew such a person. After a marathon search that lasted for a week, the Ghaziabad Police have fished out the body of a financier from the Agra canal near Haryana's Palwal town, police said Wednesday. The body of Rahul Sharma was recovered Tuesday. He was allegedly killed by one Arun Nehra over a monetary dispute in Dhuai village, they said. DIG Upendra Agarwal said Nehra had taken a loan of Rs 11 lakh from Sharma and was not clearing the dues which led to a tiff a week ago. On 29 January, Nehra called Sharma to repay the amount. The next day, Sharma went to Nehra's residence but did not return home. Sharma's family members had lodged a missing report at Murad nagar police station. During investigation, police nabbed Nehra, who, upon interrogation, confessed to the crime. He revealed that he had strangulated the financier to death inside his own house in front of family members and threw his body near Agra canal close to Palwal town of Haryana. Bhiwandi Police in the district has registered a case of murder in connection with the death of a 21-year-old woman. Sapna Rajkumar Gautam was found dead at her house with injuries on her neck Tuesday when her husband was away at work. The police earlier thought it was a suicide or an accidental death. However, the autopsy report suggested that it was a murder, said sub-inspector Sandeepan Sonawane of Shanti Nagar police station. According to the preliminary probe, Sapna and her husband, a powerloom worker, were married three years ago against her family's wishes. She later gave birth to two children. Five additional judges were appointed on Wednesday to the Calcutta High Court. Separate Law Ministry notifications said the judges will have a tenure of two years. Those appointed were Saugata Bhattacharyya, Manojit Mandal, Tirthankar Ghosh, Hiranmay Bhattacharyya and Md Nizamuddin. Questioning Chhattisgarh police's claim that a tribal woman died in cross-fire between security personnel and Naxals in Sukma district Saturday, AAP leader Soni Sori has alleged that no real encounter had taken place. The security personnel "deliberately" fired on villagers, the tribal activist alleged Wednesday. "After getting information about the fake encounter, I visited Godelguda village Sunday. According to the villagers and eye-witnesses, no gun-battle took place between security forces and Naxals on the morning of January 2," Sori said in a statement. A 34-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly stealing purse of a British woman at a metro station in Delhi, police said Wednesday. The accused, identified as Manish, is a Commerce graduate and a resident of Sarojni Nagar, they added. In her complaint, British citizen Marmar reported that somebody stole her purse consisting of three ATM cards, 3,900 pounds and her driving license at Rajouri Garden metro station, DCP (Metro) Dinesh Kumar Gupta said. The involuntary manslaughter conviction of a young woman who encouraged her boyfriend through dozens of text messages to kill himself was upheld Wednesday by Massachusetts' highest court. The Supreme Judicial Court agreed with a lower court judge who found that Michelle Carter caused Conrad Roy III's death when she told him to "get back in" his truck that was filling with toxic gas after he told her he was scared. The judge said Carter had a duty to call the police or Roy's family when she knew he was killing himself. "And then after she convinced him to get back into the carbon monoxide filled truck, she did absolutely nothing to help him: she did not call for help or tell him to get out of the truck as she listened to him choke and die," Justice Scott Kafker wrote in the Supreme Judicial Court's ruling. Atempts by nine passengers to smuggle gold in compound form by hiding it in their rectum in capsules were foiled by the customs personnel at the Kozhikode airport and the contraband totally weighing 7.2 kg seized, a senior official said Wednesday. The officials of the Air Intelligence unit seized 7.32 kg of gold in compound form from the passengers who had arrived from Dubai by different flights on Monday and Tuesday, Customs Commissioner Sumit Kumar said in a release. The gold in compound form, which is a complex mixture of the precious metal with chemicals, was recovered after a procedure at a hospital where the passengers were taken. The expected quantity of gold after segregation would be more than 5 kgs, Kumar said adding a thorough search of the passengers led to the seizures. The passengers attempted to smuggle the gold by putting the compound into small capsules and inserting them in their rectum, the official said. Some of them have been arrested, he said.
