Flagging the 16 suicide deaths of students over NEET in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister M K Stalin on Monday urged President Droupadi Murmu to accord her assent at the earliest to the state's anti-NEET Bill. Writing to the President, Stalin pointed to the "unfortunate consequences" due to the delay in the grant of approval to the Tamil Nadu Admission to Undergraduate Medical Degree Courses Bill, 2021 and urged her to provide assent immediately. The chief minister underscored the back-to-back suicide deaths of a son and his father on August 12 and 13 respectively due to the stress of NEET. "With this, the toll of students who have died by suicide due to NEET has increased to 16 in our State. These tragedies could have been definitely avoided if our Bill for exemption from NEET had been given assent and the medical admissions done on the basis of +2 marks," Stalin said in his letter to the President. Giving a background to the legislative process, Stalin referred to the Justice A K Rajan
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Monday passionately appealed to National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) aspirants not to harbour any suicidal tendencies but face life with self-confidence. He claimed that in a few months, when "political change takes place", then the barriers erected by NEET will come crashing down. "Then, all those who say 'I will not sign' will disappear," the Chief Minister said referring to the alleged remark on the Tamil Nadu Assembly resolution on NEET exemption made by Governor R N Ravi. "I offer my deepest condolences on the demise of student Jagatheeswaran and his father Selvasekhar. Let their deaths be the last on the altar of NEET," Stalin said in a statement here.

The opposition AIADMK on Saturday demanded Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin to negotiate with his Karnataka counterpart and secure 86.380 TMC Cauvery water due for the state. Accusing the Congress government of creating a problem for Tamil Nadu's farmers, AIADMK general secretary K Palaniswami said the Chief Minister should hold parleys with his counterpart Siddaramaiah and deputy chief Minister D K Shivakumar and obtain the Cauvery water. "Currently, the reservoirs in Karnataka have a storage of about 80 percent. Stalin should visit Bengaluru and hold talks with Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, who are part of his alliance, and obtain 86.360 TMC water due for June, July and this August and save the Kuruvai paddy crop raised on 3.5 lakh acres which is on the verge of wilting," Palaniswami said in a statement here. He said the Cauvery water issue resurfaced after DMK's ally, the Congress, came to power in Karnataka. The AIADMK had since the era of later Chief Ministers: M G ...
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Friday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to advise Karnataka to immediately release Cauvery water due to the State as per schedule and clear the 28.8 thousand million cubic feet (tmc ft) shortfall. Stalin, writing to Modi, said the Supreme Court had fixed the share of water to be delivered by Karnataka to Tamil Nadu at Billigundulu, on the inter-state border, as per the monthly schedule. Unfortunately, Karnataka is not honouring the order in letter and spirit and not adhering to the directions of Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA). In the current 2023-2024 water year, Karnataka has released only 11.6 tmc ft of water, as against 40.4 tmc ft due at Billigundulu from 1 June to 31 July, 2023. "Such a huge shortfall of 28.8 tmc ft has been thrust on Tamil Nadu, even while Karnataka has a gross storage of 91 tmc ft in its four major reservoirs, against their full storage capacity of 114.6 tmc ft." On the other hand, the storage position in

If the BJP is to win another term in power at the Centre, nobody can save democracy, social justice and the Constitution, DMK President and Chief Minister M K Stalin said here on Wednesday. Addressing DMK's booth-level party functionaries of Cauvery Delta districts, Stalin said that the most significant aspect is about who must not remain in power at the Centre rather than who should capture power following the polls to the Lok Sabha next year. The DMK and its allies must win in all the 39 constituencies in Tamil Nadu besides the lone segment in neighbouring Puducherry, he said and exhorted the party cadres to work for a big win. Stalin advised his partymen in-charge of polling stations to speak to people about ideology and welfare schemes and use social media effectively for campaigning. The top DMK leader alleged that the BJP has damaged the fundamental ideas that constitute India and "we have to put a full stop to this in the upcoming (2024) Parliamentary polls; otherwise not onl

Some have put on the "Tamil mask" to deceive people but the calculation they make would misfire, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M K Stalin said here on Saturday in a veiled attack on the BJP. In his address at the 42nd anniversary celebrations of 'Muthamizh Peravai', a forum dedicated to nurturing Tamil literature, Stalin recalled the literary work of late chief minister and DMK patriarch 'Kalaignar' M Karunanidhi (1924-2018). Underlining the government's recently completed initiatives such as the Kalaignar centenary super speciality hospital at Guindy here and the state-of-the-art Kalaignar memorial library in Madurai, he said people have been benefitted through such projects. Fostering Tamil literature (its three forms, the Muthamizh -- Iyal, Isai and Nadagam) means nurturing Tamil language and protecting the Tamil people. Without naming anyone, the Chief Minister said: "Today, some (people), even while pursuing activities against the Tamil language and the Tamil ...
Karnataka has not released Tamil Nadu's due share of Cauvery water and the standing Kuruvai crop can be saved only if the former lets out water immediately, the state government apprised the Centre on Thursday and sought its immediate intervention on the matter. Writing to Union Jal Shakti Minister, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Chief Minister M K Stalin said the short-term Kuruvai is a crucial crop for the farmers of Tamil Nadu's Cauvery delta region. He said the quantum of water received at Billigundulu on the inter-state border, from June 1 to July 17 was 3.78 tmc (thousand million cubic feet) only, as against the prescribed level of 26.32 tmc for this period. This leaves a huge shortfall of 22.54 tmc and even this meager flow of 3.78 tmc realised at Billigundulu was from the 'uncontrolled intermediate catchment areas' below the KRS and Kabini reservoirs up to Billigundulu. To facilitate the cultivation of Kuruvai crop on time, the Mettur reservoir in Tamil Nadu was opened this yea

At the invitation of Prime Minister Modi, Wickremesinghe is set to visit India on an official visit on July 21. This will be his first visit to the country since assuming the 'current responsibilities,' according to the External Affairs Ministry. Stalin, writing to Modi, said it is imperative to protect the social, political, cultural and economic rights of the Tamils in Sri Lanka so that they could lead dignified lives as equal citizens. "For this purpose, there must be adequate and meaningful devolution of

Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on Monday alleged that governors in Opposition-ruled states "destabilise and interfere", as he backed Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin's demand seeking removal of Governor R N Ravi. In a letter to President Droupadi Murmu, Stalin has charged that Ravi "instigates communal hatred" and is a "threat" to Tamil Nadu's peace. "By way of his behaviour and action, the Governor has proved to be partial and ineligible to hold the office of Governor; Ravi is fit to be removed from the high office," the CM emphasised in his letter. Reacting to the development, Sibal said, "Ambedkar on Governors:...said 'functionarya purely ornamental functionaryno power of interference in administration' "Governors in opposition ruled states: 1) have Hindutva agenda 2) destabilise & interfere 3) incite hate. Stalin is right to ask for Ravi's removal," the former Union minister tweeted. Sibal, who was a Union minister during UPA 1 and 2, had quit the Congress in May last year and
Governor R N Ravi "instigates communal hatred" and he is a "threat" to Tamil Nadu's peace, Chief Minister M K Stalin has conveyed to President Droupadi Murmu, the government said on Sunday. In a letter to Murmu, Stalin said that Ravi has violated the oath of office he took under Article 159 of the Constitution, the government said in an official release. "Ravi is stoking communal hatred and he is a threat to Tamil Nadu's peace," Stalin said in a letter dated July 8, 2023. On the recent issue of the Governor's move to dismiss Minister V Senthil Balaji from the Cabinet, which he later backtracked from, Ravi showed his political slant, the CM claimed in his letter. On the one hand, Ravi delayed sanction to prosecute former ministers in the previous AIADMK regime and on the other hand, through his hasty action in Senthil Balaji's matter -- against whom only now a probe has begun -- he has displayed his political inclinations, the letter said. "By way of his behaviour and action, the .
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and ruling party chief M K Stalin on Sunday said there is nothing to worry even if the DMK-led state government faces a risk in view of its staunch opposition to the BJP. Speaking about the recent Patna meeting of opposition parties, Stalin said it is more important to ensure that a certain dispensation does not continue -- rather than focus on who captures power -- in an obvious reference to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP government at the Centre. Referring to the proposed next meeting of Opposition parties in Karnataka (17-18 July), the DMK chief claimed that the BJP regime in general and Modi in particular is infuriated by such developments. Hence, Modi is "talking something", forgetting that he is the Prime Minister. There is nothing to worry about that, he said. There need not be even a "wee bit of concern" about any scenario that may emerge, even if it means a threat to the DMK regime in view of the party's stiff opposition to the BJP, Stali
