Forty years after the Bhopal gas tragedy, the shifting of some 377 tons of hazardous waste began from the defunct Union Carbide factory on Wednesday night for its disposal, an official said. The toxic waste is being shifted in 12 sealed container trucks to the Pithampur industrial area in Dhar district, 250 km away from Bhopal. "12 container trucks carrying the waste set off on a non-stop journey around 9 pm. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Wednesday lay the foundation stone of the Ken-Betwa river linking project, the first such initiative under the national river interlinking policy, at Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh. Nearly 44 lakh people in 10 districts of Madhya Pradesh and 21 lakh in Uttar Pradesh will get drinking water under the project, which is estimated to cost Rs 44,605 crore, MP Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said on Tuesday. Nearly 7.18 lakh farmer families of 2,000 villages will be benefitted from the project, which will also generate 103 MW of hydropower and 27 MW of solar energy, he said. Textiles major Trident Group plans to invest Rs 3,000 crore in Madhya Pradesh to expand its operations in the state resulting in 3,000 new jobs, its Chairman Rajinder Gupta said on Monday. The Ludhiana-based vertically integrated textiles firm currently has operations involving sourcing cotton to produce finished goods in the state, it said in a regulatory filing. "We ventured into Madhya Pradesh a few years ago and invested Rs 5,000 crore. The Class XII student who allegedly shot dead the principal of his school in Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur district is "remorseless" and appears to be a "psychopath", an official connected to the probe claimed on Saturday. The 17-year-old boy shot principal SK Saxena (55) of Dhamora Government High School near the institution's toilet at around 1:30pm on Friday and had then escaped from the spot along with a classmate on the deceased's scooter, police said.
