Pawar steps down as NCP chief, forms panel to decide on future action

Nationalist Congress Party president Sharad Pawar on Tuesday said he has decided to step down as the party chief. Speaking at a book launch of his autobiography at the Yashwantrao Chavan Pratisthan here, Pawar announced his decision which was met with protests by NCP workers and leaders. I have decided to step down as the president of the Nationalist Congress Party, he said. Pawar also announced a panel of senior party leaders to draw a future course of action. What about 'Mann ki Baat' on inflation and unemployment? Maha Cong chief

Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole on Sunday wondered when Prime Minister Narendra Modi will do a 'Mann ki Baat' on issues such as inflation and unemployment. On a day when the 100th episode of PM Modi's monthly radio programme was aired, Patole said the prime minister should clarify his ties with businessman (Gautam) Adani. ''Instead of talking about other things, Modiji should tell people about his relationship with Adani," the Congress leader told reporters. "The 100th episode of PM Modi's 'Mann Ki Baat' was celebrated with great fanfare. During these 100 episodes, PM Modi never mentioned the burning issues of the country such as inflation, unemployment, the collapsing economy, encroachment by China, sexual abuse of women wrestlers by BJP MP, '40% corrupt' government in Karnataka, farmers etc," Patole alleged. In a dig, he said in a democracy one should do 'janta ki baat' by speaking about the issues of the masses and not 'Mann Ki Baat'. He said the people of the countr

Set up economic development corp for welfare of ageing folk artists: Ajit

Senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar on Saturday said an economic development corporation should be set up by the Maharashtra government for the welfare of elderly folk artists who have turned elderly now. In a letter to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly also suggested that the corporation be named after late folk artist Vithabai Narayangaonkar. The corporation is necessary for the needs related to accommodation, food, medication of retired and elderly folk artists, and education of their children, Pawar said. During their active years as folk artists, they brought glory to the state's culture and folk art, he noted. "There should be an old age home for the folk artists," he added.

Won't proceed with Barsu refinery project without locals' consent: Shinde

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Friday said the proposed refinery project at Barsu village in Ratnagiri district will not be implemented without the local people's consent, and appealed for calm in the area. Earlier in the day, police used tear gas in Barsu and Solgaon villages in Rajapur tehsil to disperse the protesters who are opposing the refinery, and detained Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Vinayak Raut. "A former chief minister himself had suggested the Barsu site to the Union government. After losing the CM's post, he is opposing the project. One can not have such double standards," Shinde told reporters in Mumbai, apparently referring to Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray whose party is now backing the section of villagers opposing the refinery. "We are a people's government and we are not against them. We will not proceed without the local people's consent,' the chief minister added. Shinde also claimed that more than 70 percent of locals support the project as it wil

Have agreed to CBI probe into Palghar lynching case: Maharashtra to SC

The Maharashtra government Friday told the Supreme Court that it has already recommended a CBI probe into the alleged lynching of three persons in Palghar in 2020 and this led to the closure of proceedings on as many as four pending petitions on the issue. A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha took note of the fresh affidavit of the state government that a communication to this effect has already been issued by it. "In view of the decision taken by the state government, no further direction is needed on these petitions at this stage. The petitions are disposed of," the bench said. The pleas demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), alleging that the investigation by the state police was being conducted in a biased manner. Earlier, the erstwhile Maha Vikas Aghadi government had opposed the plea for a CBI probe into the incident and later, with the change in dispensation in the state, it agreed to the petitions seeking ...

Stopped from entering mill: Raut calls it attempt to hide irregularities

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Wednesday alleged that the police stopped him from entering the premises of a sugar mill at Daund in Pune district, where he wanted to go to pay floral tributes at the statue of the late founder of the sugar factory. The incident occurred at Bhima-Patas Cooperative Sugar Mill at Daund, around 75 km from Pune city. The Rajya Sabha member was later allowed to enter the premises with a couple of others, the police said. Raut dubbed the incident as an attempt to hide the irregularities in the factory. The sugar mill is controlled by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Rahul Kul. Last month, Raut had written to Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, levelling allegations of misappropriation of funds worth Rs 500 crore against Kul, and demanded a probe against him by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). On Wednesday, when Raut's motorcade reached the gate of the sugar mill, it was stopped by the police. Visuals showed the police at the gate asking peopl
