Consumer court raps MakeMyTrip over fraud, orders ₹1.37 lakh payout

A consumer court has held MakeMyTrip (MMT) guilty of deficiency in service as well as adopting unfair trade practice for not acting on fraudulent transactions and deducting cancellation charges on a customer's air tickets as it asked the firm to pay him compensation. Observing the online travel firm "cannot shirk from its responsibility of keeping customers' financial and private details safe", it asked MMT to pay the remaining airfare of Rs 61,608, remaining airfare for illegal transaction of Rs 6,260 with 6 per cent annual interest from November 1, 2019, Rs 50,000 for mental agony, harassment and Rs 20,000 for legal expenses (total Rs 1.37 lakh) to the customer. MakeMyTrip adds 'seat availability forecast' feature to ease train bookings

Travel booking major MakeMyTrip on Monday launched Seat Availability Forecast, providing a predictive view of when seats on a selected train are likely to sell out. The Gurugram-headquartered firm said its data shows that nearly 40 per cent of users book train tickets across multiple sessions, often over several days. Among these users, close to 70 per cent end up booking waitlisted tickets, simply because confirmed seats are no longer available by the time their plans firm up. Reserved train tickets in India open for booking 60 days ahead of departure. However, most travellers only finalise their plans much closer to the date, MakeMyTrip stated. "With demand patterns varying significantly from week to week, the window for confirmed bookings keeps shifting. In April, most high-speed trains were sold out around 13 days before the departure date. By May, due to rising demand, they were typically booked out more than 20 days before departure," the NASDAQ-listed company said. For ...

India's sustainable tourism market to touch $216 mn: MakeMyTrip founder

India's sustainable tourism market is set to grow to USD 216 million in a decade from a modest USD 37 million at present, MakeMyTrip Founder and Chairman Deep Kalra said on Wednesday. Addressing a travel conclave organised by the MakeMyTrip Foundation, Kalra highlighted the enormous potential presented by the sustainable tourism growth opportunity. "India's sustainable tourism market is still modest in size. It's about 37 million in dollar terms. Today should be in crores ... about Rs 320 crores right now, but growing to USD 216 million in 10 years time, will be among the fastest growing markets," he observed. The MakeMyTrip founder and chairman further shared that in terms of sustainability, today, only 1 to 2 per cent of all tourism in India can be called sustainable, and that's a stark contrast from international numbers in terms of enablers. He informed that globally, sustainable tourism is set to grow to a whopping USD 11.4 trillion in ten years time, from about USD 3.12 trill
