The Section 35 of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act mandates that the civic body must elect a mayor at its first meeting of each financial year
The Aam Aadmi Party on Thursday said it was confident that its councillor would be elected as the next mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi since the numbers were "on their side". Sources in the party said they were also keeping a keen eye on the BJP. This comes after senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia on Wednesday alleged that the BJP had made attempts to poach its newly elected councilors. The AAP on Wednesday wrested power from the BJP in the high-stakes civic polls in the national capital, even as some leaders of the saffron party claimed that its member could be elected to the top post. The municipal polls were held on December 4 and the AAP bagged 134 of the 250 wards, emerging as a clear winner. Amid all this, the party even had plans to take its councillors to Punjab to ensure that they are not "poached" by the BJP but the plan was cancelled, sources claimed. The action by the New Delhi District Election Officer (DEO) comes after the BJP's Delhi unit on Friday alleged an MCC violation by Kejriwal and lodged a complaint with the State Election Commission. Following the complaint, the poll panel had written to the New Delhi District's DEO, saying the event had been brought to the commission's notice. A top official in the New Delhi district election administration on Saturday said, due permission was taken for the event for a gathering o

Fearing defeat, the BJP ensured that the Delhi municipal elections are held a day before the December 5 phase of the Gujarat assembly polls so that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal keeps shuttling between here and the state, senior AAP leader Gopal Rai alleged on Monday. While the Gujarat assembly elections will be held in two phases on December 1 and 5, the polls to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) are on December 4. "The MCD elections were supposed to be held in March, and when the BJP conducted a survey in Delhi, they knew that they (its candidates) would not be able to even save their deposits. All of their leaders went to (Union home minister) Amit Shah and asked him to do something, otherwise they will be exposed," Rai, who held a jansamvad in his Babarpur assembly constituency, said. Recalling how the Election Commission had called a press conference to announce the date of the MCD elections, he alleged that Shah stalled the polls by saying that all the three corporatio

There was a company who was given the tender from MCD to manage the parking lots across the city and to collect the parking fees from the people and to deposit that fees to MCD's exchequer, said AAP
The AAP on Saturday claimed that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) suffered a big "loss to its exchequer" due to irregularities in the collection of parking fees and alleged the involvement of senior BJP leaders. At a press conference here, the AAP's MCD in-charge Durgesh Pathak demanded that the lieutenant governor order an investigation into it, according to a party statement. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) allegation came ahead of the civic polls. There was no immediate reaction from the BJP or the MCD. The BJP was in power in the three civic bodies in Delhi before they were merged into the MCD. "BJP-led MCD gave a tender to a company to collect parking fees; people paid Rs 1.5 crore in total, but the collected amount never reached the MCD," Pathak alleged. The matter "went to the court", but the company did not pay the money, despite the court order in 2022. The MCD "suspended its licence" and "blacklisted" the firm, he claimed. Owners of that company opened several other
