Power utility company Adani Electricity on Monday said it relied completely on renewable sources for supply of power to Mumbai for four hours on Diwali day. Adani Electricity supplied 1,200 MW of power from renewable sources to its 3 million subscribers between 10 AM and 2 PM, which meant that over 40 per cent of the financial capital's power needs were derived from renewable energy. The peak demand of the financial capital on Sunday morning was over 2,500 MW, which went up to 2,776 MW in the evening. Noise levels during Diwali celebrations in several parts of Mumbai exceeded readings of last year, and firecrackers were burst beyond the 10pm deadline set by the courts, an NGO specialising in noise pollution awareness said on Monday. Diwali was celebrated with traditional pomp and fervour, marked with lights and firecrackers, across the nation on Sunday. The maximum noise level recorded in Mumbai during celebrations this year was 117 decibels, up from the top reading of 109.1 decibels last year, Awaaz Foundation said. The decibel levels peaked between 82 and 117 at Marine Drive in south Mumbai at 9:55pm, with the promenade seeing a huge crowd of revellers bursting "serial" and "aerial" bombs, the NGO's founder Sumaira Abdulali said in a release. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has demolished four chimneys of gold and silver smelting units in Kalbadevi and Zaveri Bazar area in South Mumbai amid worsening air pollution in the city, officials said on Wednesday. According to BMC officials, their C-ward took action against the units as they were compounding the air pollution in the metropolis. Mumbai's average air quality index (AQI) stood at around 150, or "moderate", on Wednesday, according to official data. As part of the business of making ornaments and allied activities, gold and silver are melted in smelting units, which are mostly small-scale factories. While the precious metals are melted in a furnace, gaseous byproducts are released into the air through chimneys, civic officials said. Maharashtra government on Wednesday decided to acquire the iconic Air India building at Nariman Point in Mumbai for Rs 1,601 crore. The decision was taken at a meeting of the state cabinet in Mumbai. The meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, also decided to waive off around Rs 250 crore unrealised income and interest on the property, an official said. The building was constructed in 1974 on land owned by the state government, which will now use it for its office space. After the 2012 fire at Mantralaya, the state secretariat building in south Mumbai, four major departments -- public health, medical education, water supply and sanitation, and rural development -- have been operating from GT Hospital. These departments, along with others, may be shifted to the Air India building, an official said. The 23-storey building is owned by Air India Assets Holding Limited, a company created by the union ministry of civil aviation in 2018 to manage all Air India-owned properties.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday said his government is making all efforts to curb rising pollution in Maharashtra and appealed for united efforts to make it happen.
