86% of large-cap MFs underperformed indices in year to June 2021: Report

Eighty six per cent of large-cap equity schemes of mutual funds underperformed the indices during the one year to June 2021, which witnessed one of the strongest rallies in the markets, a report said on Monday. The scenario was not different in mid-cap and small-cap schemes of MFs either, which witnessed 57.1 per cent of the schemes trailing the movement in the respective benchmarks, S&P Indices Versus Active (SPIVA) said in its half-yearly report. Markets have had a phenomenal run since April 2020, fuelled by easy liquidity conditions created the world over following the pandemic, and concerns have been raised about the financial market euphoria being de-linked from actual economic activity on the ground. The report said over longer horizons as well, majority of the actively managed funds in India underperformed their respective benchmarks. Sebi introduces swing pricing mechanism for debt mutual fund schemes

Capital markets regulator Sebi on Wednesday decided to introduce a swing pricing mechanism for open-ended debt mutual fund schemes, a move that will discourage large investors from sudden redemptions. To begin with, the swing pricing framework will be made applicable only for scenarios related to net outflows from the schemes, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) said in a circular. The mechanism will be a hybrid framework with a partial swing during normal times and a mandatory full swing during market dislocation times for high risk open-ended debt scheme. The new framework, aimed at ensuring fairness in treatment of entering, exiting and existing investors in mutual fund schemes, particularly during market dislocation, will be applicable from March 1, 2022. Generally, swing pricing refers to a process for adjusting a fund's net asset value to effectively pass on transaction costs stemming from net capital activity to the investors concerned.
