Unidentified caller threatens to blow up BKU leader Rakesh Tikait: Police

An unidentified person has threatened to blow up Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait and his family if he does not disassociate himself from farmer protests, police said on Friday. They said Gaurav Tikait, son of Rakesh Tikait's brother and BKU president Naresh Tikait, has filed a complaint that he has received a phone call from an unidentified person who has threatened to target Rakesh Tikait and his family members with a bomb if he does not stay away from farmer agitations. Akshay Sharma, the SHO of Bhaura Kalan police station, said a case has been filed in this connection. "We are trying to identify the caller and a probe is underway," Sharma said. Rakesh Tikait was one of the farmer leaders who headed the agitation against the now-repealed farm laws. He continues to take part in protests by farmer groups across the country. Delhi HC asks police about action over offensive tweet against Md Zubair

The Delhi High Court on Thursday asked the city police about the action taken by it against a Twitter user for his alleged offensive tweet on fact-checking website Alt News co-founder Mohammad Zubair. Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani, who was hearing Zubair's plea to quash an FIR registered against him after he responded to the Twitter user who was using a picture with his minor daughter as display picture on the platform, observed that although the police have not found anything against Zubair in the case, the matter should come to a logical closure. The FIR was lodged against Zubair in 2020 for allegedly threatening and torturing a minor girl. "What about the person who put the offensive tweet? What did you do regarding this gentleman? asked the court. "I want to know what happened... Victim has fundamental right to fair investigation and trial, says SC

Observing that a victim has a fundamental right to a fair trial, the Supreme Court on Friday ordered Maharashtra Police to further investigate the alleged assault on a man at NCP MLA Jitendra Awhad's bungalow over an objectionable social media post. The alleged incident had taken place on the night of April 5, 2020. According to the victim's complaint, some policemen were also involved in "abducting" him and taking him to the bungalow of the former Maharashtra minister. While refusing to order a CBI probe in the matter, a bench of Justices MR Shah and CT Ravikumar said the Bombay High Court has not committed any error in refusing to transfer the investigation to CBI. 7 shot, including 2-year-old, outside Philadelphia school: Police

Seven people, including five teens and a 2-year-old girl, were wounded Thursday evening in a shooting near a school in Philadelphia, police said. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports shots were fired shortly before 6 p.m. in the city's Strawberry Mansion neighbourhood. The 2-year-old was listed in stable condition at a hospital. She had been struck in the thigh. Five teenage boys were also injured and hospitalised. One, 15, was in critical condition and the rest were stable. A seventh victim was a 31-year-old woman, police said. She was also in stable condition. A motive was not immediately known and there were no arrests. Philadelphia School Board President Reginald Streater said the shooting happened near an elementary school as a non-school event was ending.

Drivers under 40 responsible for more than 65% of road accidents in HP

Drivers below 40 years of age were involved in 65 per cent of all road accidents in the past 70 months, most of them caused by speeding and dangerous driving, police here said on Thursday. Over 6,250 people lost their lives while around 25,000 received injuries in over 15,600 road accidents in the past five years and ten months (from 2017 till Oct 2022), according to the police data. About 26 per cent of these accidents took place during 6 pm to 9 pm and the maximum cases of pedestrians being hit by vehicles were reported in the plain areas of Baddi, Una, and Poanta Sahib. The data was shared during a three-day-long training for Traffic, Tourist and Railways police held here in which 35 investigation officers participated, a release issued said. The participants were trained on several subjects including collection of digital evidence, knowledge about new electronic gadgets, the Motor Vehicle Act, and traffic rules.

Weeks after fire at Nashik factory, police file case against seven people

Weeks after three workers were killed in a fire at Jindal Poly Films Ltd in Nashik district, police on Wednesday filed a case against seven people, including the owner of the facility, its manager and operator. The January 1 fire at the company located at Mundhegaon alongside the Nashik-Mumbai National Highway in Igatpuri taluka also injured 22 workers. A case of accidental death and fire was registered at the Ghoti police station in the matter and investigations were on. Now, police have registered a case against seven people -- all associated with the fire-hit facility and holding different posts in the unit. As the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) was not followed while starting the plant after its checking and repairing, thermic fluid oil leaked from the unit which led to the fire, police said, quoting a report. Cops use water cannons to disperse employees demanding restoration of OPS

The Haryana Police on Sunday used water cannons and tear gas shells to disperse a large group of state government employees holding a demonstration in Panchkula for the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme. Police took action when the demonstrators, who had gathered on the Panchkula-Chandigarh border, tried to cross over into the Union Territory and march towards the Haryana chief minister's residence and 'gherao' it to press for their demand. There was heavy police deployment at the site on the border, police said. The Odisha Police in its FIR in the killing of Health minister Naba Kishore Das said the accused assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Gopal Das had "clear intention" to kill the minister. This was stated by Brajrajnagar Police Station inspector-in charge (IIC) Pradumnya Kumar Swain, who was present at the site when the ASI allegedly opened fire at the 60-year-old minister, leading to his death after some hours during treatment on Sunday. Odisha health minister shot by cop in Jharsuguda district, accused nabbed

Odisha's Health and Family Welfare minister Naba Kishore Das was on Sunday shot at allegedly by an assistant sub-inspector of police in Jharsuguda district, an officer said. The incident took place in Brajrajnagar town around 1 pm when the minister was on his way to attend a programme. "Assistant Sub-inspector of Police (ASI) Gopal Das opened fire at the minister, who sustained bullet injuries. Some state police chiefs ask GeM to allow small arms sale at platform

Police chiefs of some states have asked the commerce ministry's Government e-marketplace (GeM) to permit sale of small arms so that states can procure them at competitive prices from the public procurement platform, an official said. At present, GeM is not authorised to allow sale of small or any type of weapons from its platform. The Government e-Market (GeM) portal was launched on August 9, 2016, for online purchases of goods and services by all the central government ministries and departments. When contacted, a GeM official confirmed that they have received the communications for the same from some state police chiefs. "Following the communications, we have written to the ministry of home affairs seeking their views on the matter," the GeM official added. Gunfight erupts between security forces, Naxals on outskirts of Ranchi

A gunfight took place between Naxals and security forces on the outskirts of Ranchi city, police said. Acting on a tip-off that five members of the banned Tritiya Sammelan Prastuti Committee (TSPC) outfit were in a forest in Budmu area, a search operation was launched around 3.30 pm on Thursday, they said. Soon, a gunfight broke out between the Naxals and the forces, they added. "However, the extremists escaped taking advantage of the dense forest," Superintendent of Police (Ranchi-Rural) Naushad Alam told PTI. A rifle and some cartridges were seized from the area, he said. Another Russian found dead in Odisha, third in fortnight, say police

Another Russian was found dead in Odisha on Tuesday, the third such incident in a fortnight, police said. The Russian, identified as Milyakov Sergey, was found dead in a ship anchored at Paradip Port in Jagatsinghpur district. The 51-year-old man was the chief engineer of the vessel, M B Aldnah, which was on its way to Mumbai from Chittagong Port in Bangladesh via Paradip. He was found dead in his ship chamber around 4.30 am. Police could not immediately ascertain the cause of the death. Man arrested for duping 6 people of Rs 15 cr by posing as ministry official

A 49-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly posing as a senior Union Health Ministry official and duping six people of Rs 15 crore on the pretext of providing work orders for Covid vaccine transportation, police said on Thursday. Umesh Batra (49) was arrested by the Economic Offences Wing of the Delhi Police. Batra used to work for a construction company but his financial situation took a hit during the lockdown and he resorted to cheating people after joining hands with the kingpin behind the scam Harmenn Sabherwal, Govind Tulshyan and three other people, all of whom have been arrested, they said. Police said a probe was initiated after several complaints were received from people who claimed to have been duped of Rs 3-4 crore on the pretext of providing work orders for transportation of Covid vaccines. After a preliminary enquiry, a case was registered and an investigation taken up. Six complainants came forward and the total amount they were duped off came out to be Rs 15 .

880 cybercriminals arrested, Rs 44 cr recovered during 2022: Haryana DGP

Haryana Director General of Police P K Agrawal on Thursday said 880 cyber criminals were arrested and Rs 44 crore recovered from them during the year. Of them, 480 were arrested by the Faridabad and Gurugram police. The DGP said till December 15, the Haryana Police received 62,089 complaints of cybercrime of which 26,885 have been disposed. In the period, it had also registered 2,016 cases and worked out 605 of them. Fifty-one cases of cybercrime were registered by police itself. These were cases in which complainants were not coming forward, and 24 of them have already been worked out, he said. He also said steps are being taken to strengthen the Panchkula-based cyber forensic laboratory by recruiting additional technical hands, according to a statement. The DGP added that a proposal is under consideration to set up such labs at the police range and commissionerate headquarters. Three arrested with Kajal wood worth Rs 14 lakh in Uttarakhand: Police

Three persons were arrested here after allegedly being found in possession of Kajal wood worth Rs 14 lakh, police said on Wednesday. The trio was held while allegedly transporting 144 nuggets of Kajal wood to Saharanpur during a routine check at a police barrier in Dunda, Superintendent of Police Arpan Yaduvanshi said.
