A survey of water quality conducted in and around Nanded village, the epicentre of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) in Pune city, has found that there was lack chlorine in the drinking water supplied to the households of 26 patients of this nerve disorder, officials said. On Tuesday, three fresh cases of GBS were reported in the city, taking the overall tally to 166, they said. Officials of the Rapid Response Team (RRT), formed to probe the outbreak of the GBS cases in Nanded and adjoining localities on Sinhagad Road area, there are a total of 77 GBS patients in Nanded. Of them, the households of 62 patients were visited to take the samples of the drinking water. Maharashtra Health Minister Prakash Abitkar on Monday disclosed that 80 per cent of the suspected cases of Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder, in Pune have been reported from areas located around a mega well in Nanded village on Sinhgad Road. Abitkar, who was in the city to review the GBS situation, noted that high number of cases in certain areas appears to be linked to suspected water contamination and assured the civic body is looking into the issue. After inspecting the water body in Nanded village, he stated, "80 per cent of cases are from areas around this well. A special court in Pune on Friday granted bail to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case related to his alleged objectionable remarks on Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar. The MP/MLA court granted bail to the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha on a surety bond of Rs 25,000 after he appeared before it through video conferencing. Senior Congress leader Mohan Joshi stood as surety before the court. A minor's right to obtain a passport and travel abroad cannot be taken away merely due to an ongoing matrimonial dispute between parents, the Bombay High Court has said. The court in its order passed on Wednesday, a copy of which was made available on Thursday, directed the Pune Regional Passport Office (RPO) to issue a passport to the 17-year-old girl within two weeks, observing that the right to travel abroad was a facet of the fundamental right guaranteed in the Constitution. The RPO had issued a communication to the girl's mother in November 2024, stating that her passport application would not be processed as her father had objected to the same. As per the plea, the girl's parents are embroiled in divorce proceedings. Registration of properties in Pune fell 11 per cent year-on-year in November to 13,371 units despite strong demand, according to Knight Frank India. In a statement on Saturday, real estate consultant Knight Frank India said Pune recorded 13,371 property registrations in November 2024, generating Rs 475 crore in revenue for the state exchequer. As many as 14,988 units were registered in November last year. Registration of properties fell 36 per cent in November compared to 20,894 units in October this year. Knight Frank India Chairman and Managing Director Shishir Baijal said, "Pune's property market continues to exhibit steady registrations, adapting to evolving buyer preferences and market conditions". The Maharashtra Real Estate Regulatory Authority (MahaRERA) on Monday said it has recovered over Rs 200 crore from developers to compensate homebuyers for their losses. The authority also outlined plans to further intensify its recovery efforts. The real estate watchdog said it has issued 1,163 warrants for recovering Rs 705.62 crore across the state and has made developers cough up Rs 200.23 crore from 283 warrants involving 139 real estate projects, as per an official statement. Over Rs 378 crore of the recoveries are due from Mumbai suburban and Pune alone, the statement said, adding that specific efforts are being undertaken to expedite the same like appointing retired Tahsildars (revenue officials) in the offices of the district collectorates in Mumbai suburban and Pune. Of the Rs 200 crore in recoveries, Mumbai city contributed Rs 46.47 crore in recoveries involving 22 warrants in 13 projects, Rs 76.33 crore came from 85 warrants in 42 projects in Mumbai suburban and Rs 39.10
