US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti said India is in the driving seat of the Quad, while America is in the seat next to it with the corrective steering wheel, and added that it is up to India to "forcefully define" the nature of the diplomatic partnership. Garcetti, speaking here at the 17th edition of Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF), used a rather unique analogy of 'eating, drinking and sharing a ride together' to explain the different roles of member countries in the Quad. The Quad is a diplomatic partnership between India, the US, Australia, and Japan to deepen economic, diplomatic, and military ties among the four countries. "India is very much in the driver seat of the Quad... may be America is in the next seat with the corrective steering wheel, I think Japan has been an avid navigator from the beginning and Australia is really excited to be back in the car and asking if everybody has enough to drink and eat, and where we are going. "So it is a great time and we love these

The United States' re-engagement with China should not be seen as having any implication on the strong ties it has with India and its commitments to the QUAD grouping, a top US official said on Wednesday. The US has been re-engaging with China at various levels after months of no contact with military as well as political leaders, which had triggered concerns about a possible confrontation between the two countries. The official said the re-engagement is primarily aimed at having better bilateral relations, especially on the economic and business front, which both countries believe is important. But it should not be seen as having any consequences on the US' strong relations with India and QUAD, which remains very important at strategic level for the US, the official added. The four-nation bloc QUAD (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue), comprising India, the US, Japan and Australia, has often been seen as a counterbalance to China in the Indo-Pacific. The idea for QUAD was first moo
The collaboration between India and the US within the Quad framework enhances security and strengthens the ability to respond to emerging geopolitical threats and promotes a rules-based international order, according to a top Indian-American executive in the American defence industry. Vivek Lall, Chief Executive for the General Atomics Global Corporation, also said as his company is building its support network within India, it is also reaching out to the Indian high-tech sector. Collaboration between the U.S. and India, within the Quad framework, enhances security by fostering a strategic partnership to address common challenges, such as regional stability, maritime security, and counterterrorism, Lall told PTI in an interview. The US, Japan, India and Australia had in 2017 given shape to the long-pending proposal of setting up the Quad or the Quadrilateral coalition to counter China's aggressive behaviour in the resource-rich Indo-Pacific region. Lall is on the Advisory Board of

The relationship between India and the US has moved in a positive direction ranging from trade to defence and the two nations have shown a sense of deep understating of each other's differences, the head of a top India-centric business and strategic group has said. Mukesh Aghi, CEO of the US-India Strategic and Partnership Forum (USISPF) said that there is more alignment between the two countries when it is looked at from the geopolitical QUAD perspective. I think in every aspect we (India-US relationship) have moved in a positive direction. You look at trade, which has gone up. You look at the military exercises, we're doing more and more of those. We also have signed a lot of agreements with the US, especially in defence and space. We have agreed to repair the ships in our ports," Aghi said on Wednesday. "When you look at it from the geopolitical QUAD perspective, there's more alignment between the two countries, Aghi told PTI in an interview. What I see is that 2023 is a year of
US President Joe Biden is not expected to visit India next month to grace the Republic Day celebrations as Chief Guest, people familiar with the matter said on Tuesday. In September, US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti said Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited President Biden to be the Chief Guest for the Republic Day celebrations on January 26 next year. However, there was no comment on the invitation by India. Separately, sources said the Quad summit is proposed to be held in India in the later part of 2024. "We are looking for revised dates as the dates currently under consideration do not work with all the Quad partners," said a source.

The next Quad summit may take place in India around January 27 with New Delhi looking at hosting US President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese for the in-person deliberations, people familiar with the matter said on Friday. India has already invited Biden to be the Chief Guest for the Republic Day celebrations on January 26 and the Quad summit could take place the next day if everything goes according to plan, they said. It is learnt that it could be inconvenient for India and the US if the summit is held after March and New Delhi has conveyed to three other member nations that it would like to host the Quad leaders in the later part of January. Japan and Australia have sent preliminary communication to New Delhi that they are fine with the proposed date for the summit, the people cited above said, adding that Washington has also sent positive signals. All the deliberations among the Quad countries are now focused on t

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday lauded former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe for envisioning the QUAD, and said it was the "only way" the countries concerned could have reacted to the present global situation. Jaishankar said Abe tried to engage with India with a certain purpose. "Abe was actually a person who foresaw a world beyond alliances...Japan is a country whose security and prosperity is secured by its alliance institutions. So that is the bedrock on which Japanese policies are based. The genius of Abe was to understand that, and yet to know...look for options, explore possibilities, he said. He was speaking at the launch of the book, "The Importance of Shinzo Abe, India, Japan and the Indo-Pacific", edited by Sanjaya Baru, who served as the media advisor to then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh between 2004 and 2008. Jaishankar credited Abe for the creation of QUAD, a strategic security dialogue between Australia, India, Japan and the United States. "S
The US has a "significant" defence partnership with India and "terrific cooperation" inside the Quad, the White House has said. "As you know, the United States has a significant defence partnership with India and terrific cooperation inside the Quad, across the Indo-Pacific with India... We are looking forward to the visit," Kirby said in response to a question. The Quad comprises Japan, India, Australia, and the US. The four countries in 2017 gave shape to the long-pending proposal of setting up the Quadrilateral coalition or "Quad" to counter China's aggressive behaviour in the Indo-Pacific.
