To ensure the growth of the community radio sector, the government on Tuesday increased the advertising time for community radio stations as well as the price rate for advertisements. It also increased the period for the grant of permission agreement from the existing five years to 10 years, according to the revised policy guidelines for the sector, which was released by Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur at the Regional Community Radio Sammelan (South) here. Under the revised policy, the government has permitted any eligible organisation functional in multiple districts to set up a maximum of six community radio stations in different districts. Leading FM Radio network Radio Mirchi, a part of Entertainment Network India Limited (ENIL) and Radio Orange have bid Rs 251 crore to acquire BIG FM Radio network, sources said. Haryana-based Sapphire FM is the other bidder in the race for BIG FM, which is undergoing an insolvency process. Incidentally, Sapphire FM has also made a bid of Rs 251 crore for Big FM. The bidders couldn't immediately be reached for comments. Both the bidders -- Radio Mirchi & Orange FM consortium and Sapphire FM -- have offered to pay the bid amount within 30 days. Sources close to the process also revealed that the lenders are likely to ask both the bidders to revise their bids upward. Broadcast regulator TRAI on Tuesday recommended that private FM radio operators be allowed to broadcast news and current affairs programmes for 10 minutes every clock hour. In its recommendations on 'Issues related to FM Radio Broadcasting', the TRAI also said that the programme code of conduct as applicable to All India Radio for news content may also be applied to private FM radio channels. "Private FM Radio Operators should be allowed to broadcast news and current affairs programs, limited to 10 minutes in each clock hour," it said. The TRAI also said that functions or features pertaining to FM radio should remain enabled and activated on all mobile handsets having the necessary hardware. "Built-in FM radio receiver in mobile handset must not be subjected to any form of disablement or deactivation," it said. In a bid to increase its footprint, the government is planning a fresh auction of FM radio stations, roll out an OTT platform and conduct trials of direct-to-mobile television broadcast this year, Information and Broadcasting Secretary Apurva Chandra said on Thursday.
