As many as 23 river systems will be developed for cargo and passenger vessel movement, as the government's focus is on increasing the movement through river systems, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has said. The aim is to utilise inland waterways to improve cargo and passenger vessels movement at cheap transportation cost, the Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways told PTI in an interview. "Till now we have 111 national waterways out of this, we have discovered there are 23 river systems which are feasible for navigation," he said. These will be developed accordingly for cargo and passenger vessels movement, Sonowal said. Touted as the world's longest river cruise, MV Ganga Vilas, has been docked at a Kolkata jetty and will on Monday leave for Sundarbans, a UNESCO heritage site, an official said. The cruise vessel, flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 13, entered West Bengal early this week through Murshidabad and later reached Kolkata, he said. Public-private partnership in port infrastructure has been an important source of investment in the sector and the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) has a pipeline of 44 projects for total investment of Rs 22,900 crore till 2024-25, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on Tuesday. Moreover, the government is working on the guidelines for dealing with stressed public-private partnership (PPP) projects at major ports and has also come up with policies to support the shipbuilding industry in India, Sonowal said.
