Polaris Smart Metering on Monday said it has secured two smart meter projects totalling Rs 5,200 crore in Uttar Pradesh. "Madhyanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (MVVNL) has awarded the contracts for installing over 5.1 million smart meters in the important clusters of Lucknow and Ayodhya/Devipatan, which the company plans to install over the next 27 months," Polaris Smart Metering said in a statement. As per the agreement, Polaris Smart Metering will supply, commission, install and maintain smart meters for consumers and system metering across the consumer base in these clusters for the next 10 years, it said. These smart meters will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology, enabling prepaid billing, real-time energy monitoring, accurate metering, and improved grid management capabilities. Recycling player Vikas Lifecare on Saturday said it has formed a Joint Venture (JV) company to set up a smart meter manufacturing unit at an investment of Rs 108 crore. Its subsidiary Genesis Gas Solutions Pvt Ltd (Genesis) has formed JV IGL Genesis Technologies Ltd with equity participation from Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) in the ratio of 49:51, Vikas Lifecare said in a statement. The JV will set up a smart meter manufacturing facility at an initial investment of Rs 108 crore in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The unit, with a capacity to manufacture 1 million smart meters annually, is being set up over an area of 65,000 sq ft, and is expected to be made operational by July this year, the company said. Orders for the manufacturing equipment have already been finalised and will be placed within this month. Vikas Lifecare recycles plastic waste to manufacture pallets and interlocking tiles for industrial applications.
Techno Electric & Engineering Company on Friday said it bagged new orders related to smart metering and transmission projects worth Rs 1,750 crore. One of the orders worth Rs 1,041 crore is for advance metering infrastructure (AMI) from RECPDCL (REC Power Development and Consultancy Limited) for 7.27 lakh smart meters in Kashmir on DBFOOT (Design-Build Finance-Own-Operate-Transfer) basis, the company said in a regulatory filing. Besides, the company also received transmission (projects) orders worth Rs 709 crore. The transmission orders include a substation package for Neemrana-ll from Sterlite worth Rs 199 crore, a substation package for establishment of 765,400 kV, 2x1500 MVA at Sikar from PGCIL worth Rs 223 crore, and a "substation package for (i) 765/400 kV Dausa and (ii) extension of 765 kV Beawar from PGCIL" worth Rs 288 crore, the filing said.

The government on Tuesday said it has issued mandatory quality norms for smart meters and welding rods to curb the import of sub-standard goods and boost domestic manufacturing of these products. A notification in this regard was issued by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) on July 14. These items cannot be produced, sold/traded, imported and stocked unless they bear the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) mark, the notification stated. Now, manufacturing, storing and sale of non-BIS certified products are prohibited as per the BIS Act, 2016. Violation of the provision of the BIS Act can attract imprisonment of up to two years or a fine of at least Rs 2 lakh for the first offence. In case of second and subsequent offences, the fine will increase to a minimum of Rs 5 lakh and extend up to 10 times the value of goods or articles. Homegrown smart metering firm Gram Power is eyeing a multi-fold growth in topline in the current fiscal as it is set to ramp up the manufacturing capacity to 10 million units per annum, according to a top company official. "We have set up a manufacturing unit with a capacity of up to 3 million smart meters per year, and we aim to ramp up production to 10 million meters in the next 12-15 months to meet the growing demand for smart metering systems in the country," Yashraj Khaitan, Founder and CEO of Gram Power, told PTI. With the capacity expansion, Gram Power is eyeing about 10 per cent of the country's 300 million metering market over the next five years.
