Union Cabinet approves setting up Centre for Disability Sports in MP's Gwalior

The Union Cabinet has approved the proposal for setting up of a Centre for Disability Sports at Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, to be registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.It will function under the name of Centre for Disability Sports, Gwalior. Setting up of the Centre shall entail an estimated cost of Rs. 170.99 crore, spread over a period of five years.The briefing was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.Improved sports infrastructure created by the Centre will ensure effective participation of persons with disabilities in sports activities and also enable them to compete at national and international levels. Setting up of the Centre will develop a sense of belonging in Divyangjan to facilitate their integration in society.At present no specialised sports training facilities for Divyangjan are available in the country. Centre approves promulgation of Aadhaar and Other Laws (Amendment) Ordinance, 2019

The Union Cabinet has approved the promulgation of an Ordinance to make amendments to the Aadhaar Act 2016, Prevention of Money Laundering Act 2005 and Indian Telegraph Act 1885.The amendments proposed are the same as those contained in the Bill passed by Lok Sabha on January 4, 2019.The cabinet briefing was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.The amendments would enable the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to have a more robust mechanism to serve the public interest and restrain the misuse of Aadhaar. Cabinet nod to creation of 2 posts of commissioners in CCPD

The Union cabinet Thursday approved a proposal for creation of two posts of commissioners in the Office of the Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities (CCPD) under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016. Out of these two posts of commissioners, one post will be reserved for person with disability, an official statement said. The two commissioners will assist the CCPD in discharging his statutory functions as per the provisions of the said Act. The step will also enable the Office of CCPD to look into complaints of persons with disabilities expeditiously, besides strengthening the monitoring mechanism overseeing the implementation of the RPwD Act, 2016, the statement added.

Cabinet nod to MoU with US on missing, exploited children

The Union cabinet Thursday approved an agreement between India and the United States to access tipline reports on missing and exploited children. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has already been signed between the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), India and the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), USA. It will provide access to more than one lakh tipline reports available with the NCMEC, USA and enable law enforcement agencies in India, an official statement said. The MoU will also pave way for setting up an innovative mechanism for sharing information about child pornography and child sexual abuse material as well as taking legal action against offenders. "It will further enable the law enforcement agencies to remove child pornography and child sexual abuse material from cyber space, thereby enhancing human dignity," it said.

Labourer gets 20 yrs for rape; crime had sparked off anti-migrant violence

A fast-track court here Thursday awarded 20 years of rigorous imprisonment to a migrant labourer for raping a 14-month-old girl in Gujarat's Sabarkantha district in September last year. The incident had led to violence against migrant labourers in some parts of Gujarat, leading to an exodus. While special public prosecutor Rashmikant Pandya demanded death penalty for 19-year-old Ravindra Sah, a native of Bihar, Sabarkantha sessions court judge K B Gujarati awarded him 20 years in prison considering his young age. Pandya said he will seek the state government's approval to file an appeal in the high court for enhancement of the punishment. Apart from the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, Sah was found guilty under the newly introduced section 376-AB of the Indian Penal Code which provides for the maximum punishment of death sentence for raping children. Dalit groom visits Ram temple under police protection in MP

A Dalit bridegroom visited a Ram temple at a village in Indore district under police protection Thursday in the face of an unwritten 'ban'. Members of upper castes allegedly did not allow the Balais, a Dalit community, to enter the Ram temple at Aurangpura village. The marriage procession of Ajay Malviya (22) was taken out in police protection Thursday, and security was also provided when he visited the temple, a police official said. Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Ram Kumar Rai said, "We had made adequate security arrangements for the marriage procession and his temple visit." There was no untoward incident, he told PTI. The Akhil Bhartiya Balai Mahasabha had submitted an application to the Betma police station Wednesday, alleging that Dalits were not allowed to enter the Ram temple at Aurangpura. Woman killed after being hit by Army truck

A 60-year-old woman died on the spot and another elderly woman sustained injuries Thursday when an Army truck hit them in Imphal East district, police said. The incident occurred at Khurkhul area of the district, about 20 kms away from the state capital, when the two women were taking an early morning stroll near the Army headquarters at Leimakhong, a senior police officer said. Army personnel took the injured to Leimakhong Army hospital and she is said to be "out of danger", the police officer said. A large number of locals blocked the road in protest against the incident. Army and police officials held talks with them before the blockade was lifted, the officer said.

J&K approves 3 pc hike in DA for government employees, pensioners

The Jammu and Kashmir administration Thursday sanctioned an increase of three per cent in dearness allowance (DA) payable on basic pay to state government employees and pensioners with effect from January 1. The decision, which will benefit about 4.50 lakh state government employees and 1.60 lakh pensioners, was taken at the State Administrative Council (SAC) meeting here under the chairmanship of Governor Satya Pal Malik, an official spokesperson said. He said with this decision, the employees would now be entitled to 12 per cent DA on their basic pay with effect from January 1. The decision's impact on the exchequer would be Rs 600 crore for the financial year 2019-20, the spokesperson said. He added that the arrears accumulated on account of DA hike would be paid in cash after April 1 in respect of all categories of employees as well as pensioners.

KTK signs MoU for resurvey of land and properties using drones

Drones or unmanned aerial vehicles will now be used by the Karnataka Revenue department to resurvey land and properties in the state. The department Thursday said it has signed an MoU with Survey of India for this purpose. Officials said the MoU is part of state government's vision to give farmers and citizens of Karnataka the perfect land records in a time-bound manner, using technology. Drone or UAV based survey is objective and not only removes human errors, but also eliminates human mischief in drawing boundary lines of land and properties, according to an officialrelease. A draft law that would have made it illegal for parents to smack their children in the Philippines has been vetoed by President Rodrigo Duterte, the presidential palace said Thursday. The bill would have banned physical, humiliating, or degrading acts of punishment or discipline by parents or teachers on children. Indian professionals, students get majority of UK visas in 2018: Home Office

Skilled professionals and students from India received a majority of UK visas in 2018, according to the latest statistics revealed by the Home Office on Thursday. Indian professionals, including doctors and software engineers, have dominated Britain's Tier-2 skilled visa category for some time, accounting for 54 per cent of all such visas granted in 2018. In the latest analysis, the Home Office said that Indian nationals marked the largest increase in the grant of Tier 2 visas, up by 6 per cent at 3,023 more visas compared to the previous year. The analysis also noted a hike in the number of student visas granted to Indians last year, up 35 per cent to hit 19,505, with Chinese students dominating that segment at 99,723 visas but marking only a 13 per cent hike. China held on to the tourist visa lead, with 56,095 or 11 per cent more visitor visas granted to Chinese nationals last year compared to an increase of 43,771, or 10 per cent, for Indian nationals. Pradhan lays foundation of road, bridge projects in Odisha

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan Thursday laid foundation stones for three national highway projects and as many underpasses in the state, asserting that the road work would improve the socio-economic condition of the people.
