Amnesty International on Wednesday urged Lebanon to end what it described as an "inherently abusive" migration sponsorship system governing the lives of tens of thousands of foreigners working in private homes. Domestic workers in Lebanon are excluded from the labour law, and instead obtain legal residency though their employers' sponsorship under the so-called "kafala" system. But activists say this leaves the maids, nannies and carers at the mercy of their employers and unable to leave without their permission, including in numerous documented cases of abuse. "Amnesty International is calling on the Lebanese authorities to end the kafala system and extend labour protections to migrant domestic workers," the London-based rights group said. "The Lebanese parliament should amend the labour law to include domestic workers under its protection," including to allow them to join unions, the group said. A gang of five people which carried out bogus Income Tax raids on businessmen on the lines of Hindi heist film "Special 26" to extort money have been busted, police said Tuesday. Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Amrendra Singh identified them as Devendra Dabar (29), Sunil Mandloi (24), Ravi Solanki (24), Durgesh Gehlot (23) and Satish Gawad (30) and said several documents were recovered from them. "Gang leader Dabar would pose as chief investigation officer of intelligence and criminal Investigation section of Income Tax department. He also carried a fake identity card," Singh said. A 22-year-old medical student allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself inside his room in Delhi's GTB Hospital, police said Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as, Ashish Chaudhary (22), a native of Jaipur Rajasthan. He was a third-year student at the medical college associated with Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in Shahdara, they said. According to Meghna Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara), Chaudhary, who was a third-year student of MBBS at University College of Medical Sciences, committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan with the help of a cloth. Ashish was residing in old boys hostel. His room was found locked from inside, police said, adding no suicide note has been found and his belongings being checked. The family has been informed. Reason behind the suicide is yet to be ascertained and further proceedings are going on, police added.
A voter turnout of 13.61 per cent was recorded Tuesday in the Anantnag Parliamentary constituency where polls are being held in three phases due to security reasons. Around 50 remand inmates of Madurai Central Prison on Tuesday staged a protest against the raids and searches conducted by police inside the jail premises.The prisoners claimed that police officials are deliberately conducting raids to suppress their demands of better food and other basic facilities."We are conducting usual raids and searches inside the jails. However, around 50 prisoners lodged a protest against it claiming that they do not have access to proper food and other basic facilities," a police official told ANI. As many as 100 police personnel were deployed by the administration after protesters climbed on walls and hurled stones at security personnel. Nine youths have been arrested on charges of spreading derogatory messages about a particular community through WhatsApp and other social media portals, police said Tuesday. The youths, belonging to another community, had convened a meeting at a village near Porayar in the district on April 21 to discuss about a clash between two communities in Ariyalur district during the general elections, they said. "We received complaints that they (the youths) had recorded derogatory messages related to the other community and spread them through the social media," Superintendent of Police C Vijayakumar told reporters here.
