Karthik happy with clinical team effort

Kolkata Knight Riders captain Dinesh Karthik Sunday praised his players for their all-round clinical effort in his side's eight-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals in an IPL match but said they need to improve in certain aspects. "It was a pretty clinical effort, the bowlers bowled well and the batsmen backed it up well too," Karthik said after the win. "In India, you get to play on a lot of slow surfaces and you need to adapt to them. We need to improve in a few situations, but that's always the case," he added. Asked about his side's debutant Harry Gurney pacer who took two wickets for 25 runs, Karthik said, "Well Harry (Gurney) is a true professional, he's played in leagues all over the world." Gurney, on his part, said, "It was a pitch that suited my cutter options, so a nice one to make my debut on. I work hard on my variations and on my yorker and it is nice to have them in tough situations, although I didn't use it much tonight. "I am working on a knuckle ball but I don't think ...

Narine and Lynn star with bat in KKR's easy win over Rajasthan Royals

Openers Sunil Narine and Chris Lynn tore the Rajasthan Royals bowling attack to shreds to help Kolkata Knight Riders notch up an easy eight-wicket win in their IPL match here today. Chasing 140 for a win, Narine (47) and Lynn (50) shared 91 runs for the opening stand in 8.3 overs to take the game away from Rajasthan Royals as KKR reached the target with 6.1 overs to spare. The win, which took KKR to the top of the table with eight points from five matches (4 wins and 1 loss), was the best of this season in terms of number of balls to spare. Narine contributed 47, his best of this IPL season, from 25 balls from which he hit six fours and three sixes while Lynn made an exact 50 from 32 deliveries, with the help of six boundaries and three sixes. When Rajasthan Royals batted, the slow track at Sawai Man Singh stadium looked like a difficult one with the ball not coming on to the bat easily, but the KKR batsmen made the nature of the track irrelevant with runs and boundaries coming thick .

Arsenal still control top-four race, says Emery

Unai Emery said Arsenal remain in control of the race for Champions League qualification after another disappointing away performance saw his side lose 1-0 at Everton on Sunday. Phil Jagielka, only drafted into Everton's starting line-up at the last minute, scored the game's only goal as Arsenal extended their wretched record as the only club in the top four divisions of English football not to have kept a clean sheet on their travels this season. But Arsenal boss Emery, while conceding his team had played badly, tried to remain positive in the aftermath at Goodison Park. "I think generally we are well. I don't think; 'today we lost and we are very bad'. It was a bad result, not a good performance today, but we are fourth," Emery said. "Before, I knew it was going to be difficult. After this result, I am thinking the same. "After this result, we can be negative because it is three points lost, but it is in our hands, if we continue taking chances and opportunities, to be in the top ...

3 teenagers stay pivotal for senior women's football national team

At barely twenty years of age, Jabamani Tudu, Roja Devi, and Manisha have carved out a small niche of a young core in the engine of the Indian senior women's national team. What might appear a group of teenagers off the field, the trio often lead from the front and provide a crucial extra bit of energy that leads to major events- be it chasing a ball down, or man-marking with persistence or running after a loose ball going for a throw-in, amongst others."All three players have different qualities. While Jabamani is a sturdy and quick to react on the pitch in defence, Roja Devi is swift between the lines and usually works her way with ease in the opponent's defence", said Head Coach Maymol Rocky."Manisha is a strong girl who can lead the attack line on her own. Her height provides the opponent with an aerial threat. The trio can easily be the core of the senior team in the near future. They possess the quality that we need from players and they have been pivotal to us lately.""They now .

Football League 'angered' by alleged racist abuse

Angry English Football League chiefs have condemned a fresh outburst of alleged racism in several matches this weekend. Championship side Brentford confirmed a season-ticket holder was arrested following a claim of abuse by Derby midfielder Duane Holmes in Saturday's 3-3 draw at Griffin Park. Wigan, also in the second tier, have reported a sickening message was sent to wing-back Nathan Byrne on social media to the police. Meanwhile, Northampton have also revealed that several of their players were allegedly abused ahead of their game at Notts County as they went on a pre-match walk from the team hotel before the League Two game at Meadow Lane. The incidents come hot on the heels of the racist abuse that had already tarnished this season across Europe. Montenegro fans marred England's Euro 2020 qualifier recently by abusing Danny Rose, Raheem Sterling and Callum Hudson-Odoi. Manchester City winger Sterling was also the victim of alleged racist abuse in a Premier League match at Chelsea

Lille draw leaves path clear for PSG to clinch French title

Paris Saint-Germain can clinch another Ligue 1 title on Sunday night by beating Strasbourg after nearest rivals Lille were held to a 1-1 draw at Reims. Jose Fonte's 56th-minute header had Lille on course to take all three points in Champagne country, but substitute Remi Oudin's 78th-minute leveller -- initially ruled out for offside but then given after a VAR review -- denied the visitors. Reims were also left furious at the referee's decision to ignore a handball in the box by Lille defender Adama Soumaoro in stoppage time as the home side appealed for a penalty. The result leaves second-placed Lille a massive 19 points adrift of PSG at the summit, and the capital club will therefore retain the title with eight games to spare if they see off League Cup winners Strasbourg at the Parc des Princes. PSG are looking to be crowned champions for the eighth time in their history, and the sixth time in seven seasons. If Thomas Tuchel's side wrap it up on Sunday night, it will match the club ..

Smith half century takes Rajasthan Royals to 139/3 against KKR

Australian batsman Steve Smith scored 73 not out to anchor Rajasthan Royals to 139 for 3 in their IPL match against Kolkata Knight Riders here on Sunday. Smith struck his first half century of this IPL season as he remained not out on 73 off 59 deliveries after the home side were invited to bat on a tricky track. The former Australia captain, who returned to competitive cricket last month after serving one-year ban for his involvement in the infamous ball-tampering scandal in South Africa, hit seven fours and one six in his unbeaten knock. He shared 72 runs in 10.4 overs with opener Jos Buttler (37 off 34 balls) for the second wicket after captain Ajinkya Rahane was out cheaply for 5 in the second over. On a slow track at the Sawai Man Singh stadium, the runs were a premium as the ball did not come on to the bat easily. The stadium was also engulfed by a sandstorm before the tie but the match started on time. The home side were 56 for 1 at halfway stage but increased the scoring rate .

Our shot selections wasn't good: Ali

Left frustrated after their sixth successive defeat, Royal Challengers Bangalore all-rounder Moeen Ali Sunday blamed the poor shot selection of the batsmen for their four-wicket loss to Delhi Capitals in IPL here. Virat was the top-scorer with a 33-ball 41 as RCB could manage 149 for eight against Delhi Capitals after being asked to take first strike here. "I think they (Delhi Capitals) bowled well. Our shot selections wasn't good," he told reporters in the post-match press conference here. "Obviously we needed a good partnership. I think, we started off well, but could not capitalise on it. Also we gave away wickets at the end and probably it wasn't smart enough," he said. The hosts were also sloppy on the field as Delhi returned to score 152 for 6 in 18.5 overs. The English off-spinner said his team is repeating the same mistakes of dropping catches and giving away wickets. "Obviously it is very frustrating as players. We are training hard. We are doing right things in the training,
